UMW Toyota Motor today announced that the locally assembled all-new Toyota Corolla Cross will be available for delivery towards the fourth quarter of the year. The company also disclosed that the model has been receiving overwhelming response from customers since its launch.
Including the Corolla Cross, UMW Toyota Motor sold more than 17,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles in the first quarter of 2021 with a market share of approximately 12.1%, which is an increase of 62% year-on-year compared to the sales volume for the same period in 2020.
Hilux is still king
The best-selling models were the Toyota Vios and the Toyota Hilux, accounting for approximately 56% of the pick-up truck market for the first quarter. The updated versions of the Toyota Innova and Toyota Fortuner were also introduced early in the year with fresh new styling and extra value-added features.
The Toyota Yaris has been consistently No. 1 in the Non-National hatchback segment with Q1 estimated market share of 73%. The Vios and Vios GRS has also achieved positive response with approximately 5600 numbers sold since their launch.
Toyota GR Yaris
As for the GR Yaris, most of the units allocated for the Malaysian market (out of 25,000 units for worldwide sales) were booked within a month of launch. The GR Yaris is one of three models in Toyota’s high-performance GR brand which are available in Malaysia.
The other models are the GR Supra and Vios GR-Sport. These models are exclusively sold through dealerships with the GR Garage that is dedicated to the brand.
Commenting on the achievement, President, Ravindran K said, “During the first quarter of 2020, the market was already declining due to the pandemic. This year, it’s a different story; with the situation easing as well as the support by the government through the PENJANA program that exempts sales tax partially or fully until June 30 this year, new vehicle sales have been consistently high. In fact, for Toyota, our momentum started in December when we launched the Toyota GR Yaris and Vios GR-Sport which excited the market and set a positive note to enter 2021,” he added.
Hari Raya ‘Countless Rewards’ promotion
Separately, with the Hari Raya festive season coming up during the second quarter, UMWT will be running the ‘Countless Rewards’ promotions for customers to drive Toyota for Raya and catch it before the SST exemption period ends. Savings for customers also include exemption on sales tax that is applicable to CBU models so customers should not miss this opportunity for big savings.
The EZ Beli financing scheme offers customers low instalments (depending on the model). Additionally, savings are available with Toyota Service Savers. This provides Toyota customers with peace-of-mind vehicle ownership with lowered maintenance cost of their Toyota vehicles.
After almost a year’s absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the motorsports scene in Malaysia is finally back. Avid fans of the scene would have noticed that the Sepang International Circuit was brimming with action last weekend at the track day events that took place.
Track days aside, even bigger racing competitions are all set to make a comeback very soon. For instance, UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd just announced that the first round of this year’s Gazoo Racing Festival will be taking place in Sepang from the 27th to the 28th of March 2021.
Live streamed racing
However, the company said that round 1 of the highly-anticipated Vios Challenge will be held as a closed door event. So, fans who would like to witness the race can only do so via what is being planned as the biggest live streamed racing carnival in Malaysia, which will be aired over two days.
According UMWT, fans and viewers will get an uninterrupted front row seat into the Vios Challenge race weekend which will feature three qualifying sessions, six individual races, pit lane insights, interviews with racers, performance by celebrities, and contests with many attractive prizes.
“It is exciting to be back racing, but as much as we would like to immediately open our doors to race fans for them to be on site, the threat of the pandemic has offered up a new and perhaps an even more promising way of enabling millions of race fans to catch the action on and off the track during the race weekend via live streaming and in the comfort and safety of their homes,” said UMW Toyota Deputy Chairman and Toyota Gazoo Racing Malaysia’s Chief Motorsport Officer Akio Takeyama.
Watch out for the Rookies
One of the main highlights of this year’s Vios Cup will be the Rookie Class, where six new young drivers will be sharing the grid with all the professional racers and celebrity drivers.
Also, for the first time, Gazoo Racing will make its presence felt in the national racing series with the introduction of the Gazoo Racing Vios Sprint Cup which will see two rounds and a total of 4 races being held, and the Gazoo Racing Enduro Cup that will be run in conjunction with the annual Sepang 1000km Endurance Race.
All the action of Round 1 will be broadcasted live on the UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd website and on the Toyota Malaysia and Toyota Gazoo Racing Malaysia Facebook pages.
In addition to the GR Yaris, UMW Toyota Motor also announced the introduction of the Toyota Vios GR-Sport last night.
Contrary to popular belief, the Vios GR-Sport here is not just a Vios with an aggressive bodykit, but essentially a more refined version of the actual Vios Challenge race car.
Powered by the same 1.5L NR Dual VVT-i engine as the regular Vios which makes 107 PS and 140 Nm of torque, the main highlight of the Vios GR-S is that it gets a 10-speed CVT with paddle shifters, versus the regular Vios’ CVT with 7 virtual ratios. The car also gets a “sports-tuned” suspension for better handling.
According to UMWT, the 10-speed CVT offers a more spirited drive, better start up, and quicker acceleration through tight corners. It is said that this new configuration also allows the car to be more responsive by sustaining higher RPM range for better throttle response especially for overtaking and re-acceleration.
Engineered and produced locally at UMWT’s plant in Bukit Raja, the Vios GR-S is the third Gazoo Racing model in Malaysia after the GR Supra and the GR Yaris. At the moment, Malaysia is the only country in the world to have the Vios GR-S.
Key exterior features include the GR Sport badge, an aggressive aerokit that comprises a sculpted front bumper similar to the GR Yaris, a rear bumper diffuser, a blacked out boot spoiler, side skirts and blacked out side mirrors. The car also gets a set of blacked-out 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped with 205/45R17 low profile tyres.
Inside, the Vios GR-S gets black suede and leather sports seats with red stitching, GR logo on the head rests, a three-spoke leather steering wheel, leather shift lever knob, and GR embossed floor carpets.
Last but not the least, we have the Gazoo Racing “GR” logo on the push start button, and a red Optitron meter panel with red needles, and GR animation on the 4.2-inch inch Multi-Information Display.
“What Toyota has done with the Vios GR-S is to take it to another level. It is not the run-of-the-mill special edition cars produced in Malaysia that normally focuses only on body kits, wheels and tyres, and interior enhancements.”
“The Vios GR-S was developed to incorporate the essence of Gazoo Racing with the focus on developing a car with exceptional driving pleasure at a particular price point. A lot of thought went into the developing a car that is worthy of wearing the GR badge, and for the price, you are actually getting a lot of car,” said the GR Ambassador and two-time Vios Challenge champion Tengku Djan Ley Tengku Mahaleel.
Available in two colour choices (Platinum White Pearl, Red Mica Metallic), the Toyota Vios GR-S is priced at RM97,500 on-the-road without insurance.

SAFETY, STYLING & A BRAND NEW ATTITUDE FOR THE NEWLY-ENHANCED VIOS
Safety and styling are the two key areas that receive the greatest attention in the newly-enhanced Toyota Vios, giving the car a more athletic, dynamic and pronounced on-the-road presence.
Now sporting a more chiseled front bumper, the car’s makeover includes a new grille design, an Aero kit which comes fitted with a front lip, and defined by new triple bezel fully LED Headlights with built-in Daytime Running Light (DRL).
The new headlights are also wired with follow-me-home function for greater safety and convenience. This feature is extended throughout the introductory, intermediate and top of the range J, E and G variants respectively.
“The enhanced Vios has an even more dynamic presence with a front silhouette that is consistent with models such as the Corolla, Camry and the recently-enhanced Yaris. Yet, despite this strong family resemblance, the Vios projects its own unique personality that has made it popular with a diverse demographic of buyers,” said President of UMW Toyota Motor Sdn. Bhd.Mr. Ravindran K.
First launched in January 2019, the latest generation sub-compact 1.5-litre Vios has established itself as a popular-selling entry-level sedan, enjoying a sterling record in safety, reliability, practicality and has the distinction of being a big value for money proposition.
The first in its segment to have been awarded with a 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating, the enhanced Vios now comes equipped with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) features that incorporates a pre-collision system (PCS) and a lane departure alert (LDA).
PCS is activated from 15km/h to reduce the risk of colliding with a preceding car, alerting the driver once it detects a vehicle within the colliding distance and assists to reduce vehicle speed as additional support to the driver.
LDA meanwhile, is activated from a speed of 50km/h and above, and alerts drivers to an unintended lane changes by giving a visual alert on the car’s Multi-Info Display and a beeping sound. This system can also be turned off at the discretion of the driver.
These are in addition to existing safety features built into the car in the form of Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRC), Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC), Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Front as well as Rear Digital Video Recorders (DVRs). It is also the only car in it segment to be fitted with seven SRS airbags (dual front, side, curtains and driver’s knee protection).
The enhanced Vios also features an all-new 3D 360 degree panoramic view monitor, giving the driver a surround and unobstructed front, rear, top, sides and three dimensional virtual views of the vehicle.
To ensure that customers enjoy the best of navigation applications, connectivity and infotainment, the enhanced Vios is now topped with a 7” inch Android Auto-Ready & Apple CarPlay (AACP). Vehicle Telematics System is also made as a standard feature for the Vios (G&E variants) in line with the company’s direction to enhance Connectivity under its 360-T Plus brand experience.
Offered with a choice of two new colours, Orange Metallic and Platinum White Pearl, customers can also opt from existing colours available that include Dark Blue Metallic, Red Mica Metallic and Silver Metallic.
Available for online bookings and also at all authorized Toyota showrooms nationwide from today, the Vios is backed by a 5-year warranty with unlimited mileage. Prices will be announced soon and customers will continue to benefit from the current waived sales tax for new and locally-assembled vehicles.
Customers also will be able to perform online booking of this new model on the UMW Toyota official website starting 16th November 2020.
UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd decided to tease the new 2020 Toyota Vios facelift over the weekend on their official Facebook page, just two weeks after the company announced that the new 2020 Toyota Yaris Facelift is now open for booking.
Two teaser images were shared on Facebook in which one showed the front fascia of the new 2020 Toyota Vios, while the other also showed the face of the new Vios, but next to the new 2020 Toyota Yaris.
Besides the fact that UMW Toyota Motor is now inviting potential buyers to register their interest or to book the new 2020 Toyota Vios, no other details like the launch date, price, or the specifications have been revealed.
However, the specifications should be identical to the 2020 Toyota Yaris which is essentially the same car but in a hatchback form.
That being said, the list of features in the new Yaris which we can expect to be offered in the new Vios includes a new front grille, triple bezel full LED Headlights, and repositioned Fog Lights on more pronounced and carved front bumper than the outgoing model.
Where safety is concerned, we can expect the new 2020 Toyota Vios to come with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) features. The revised model should come equipped with a host of additional advanced safety features and now include a pre-collision system (PCS) as well.
In the Yaris, these features complement the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRC), Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC), Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), and Front as well as Rear Digital Video Recorders (DVRs).
Connectivity and infotainment in the revised Vios should feature a 7-inch Android Auto-Ready & Apple CarPlay (AACP). Since Vehicle Telematics System is now made as a standard feature for Yaris (G&E variants) as part of the company’s direction in expanding the Connectivity under the 360-T Plus brand experience, we can expect it in the new Vios as well.
Last but not least, the new 2020 Toyota Vios is expected to arrive with maybe one or two new exterior colour options.

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT), the distributor of Toyota and Lexus vehicles in Malaysia today announced new prices for its vehicles beginning 15 June 2020, following the incentives provided to the Malaysian automotive industry.
“Toyota vehicles are now more affordable than ever. Customers should take this opportunity to upgrade or purchase a new Toyota. All relief from the new tax structure have been factored into the new pricing, considered in the best interest of our customers. Price changes vary between our CKD and CBU model line-up,” said Mr. Ravindran K., President of UMWT.
Vehicle prices have been reduced from between 1% to 6%. In addition to the above, Toyota also announced the new price with its latest monthly Sales Promotion and Rebates.
That said, below is the updated price list for Toyota and Lexus models:
UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT), in collaboration with Maybank Islamic Berhad, has announced a special financing package which is now available for graduates who wish to purchase a new Toyota Vios, Yaris, or Avanza.

Murabahah financing also follows Islamic financing principles and the combined amount financed can be up to 100% with takaful contribution of Takaful bundling and other costs (legal costs, stamp duty, etc).
The financing is available to graduates (degree-holders) who are aged between 21 and 30 years old and are currently employed. They should be earning at least RM3,000 a month and have been employed for a minimum of 6 months. Should their income be less than RM3,000 but more than RM2,000, it is still possible to apply for the financing package provided their parents (as guarantors) have a household income of RM5,000 or more.
The Toyota Vios, Yaris and Avanza are among the best-selling in the non-national segment in the Malaysian market. Their compact size, ease of driving, economical performance from its 1.5-litre engine, and low cost of maintenance make it ideal for those who are just starting out in the working world and require personal transport to get around.
They also come with most advanced features such as Blind Sport Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Digital Video Recorders (DVR), etc.
For peace of mind, the Manufacturer’s Warranty is for 5 years – with no limit on mileage travelled. Additionally, if insurance coverage is purchased from UMW Toyota Motor’s Authorised Dealers, owners receive free membership to 24SEVEN Road Assist breakdown and emergency service assistance available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Assembly Services Sdn Bhd (ASSB), UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd’s subsidiary involved in manufacturing Toyota vehicles, has resumed its assembly operations.
This follows approval given by the Selangor State Government in relation to the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) that was announced on 4 May 2020.
ASSB suspended all operations from 18 March 2020 when the Movement Control Order (MCO) was activated nationwide as a measure to break the transmission of the COVID-19 coronavirus and will re-commence its operations on 11 May 2020 onwards.
“We are grateful to the Selangor State Government for its decision to implement the CMCO with customised details and understand that it is in the best interest of the state and people,” said Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor.
“With the resumption of operations, we hope to help in boosting the economy and add momentum to the automotive industry and business moving forward.”
As with all companies allowed to resume their operations at full capacity, there are strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which must be followed. ASSB will fully adhere to these SOPs for the protection and health of its approximate 2000 employees working at its facilities.
The SOPs include establishing distances of 1 metre or more between workers; regular temperature checks; provision and use of hand sanitizers and face masks; and sanitization of various areas around the plant three times daily. Where necessary, working hours and work flows are adjusted to create a safe environment.
“Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) is also very serious about providing safe and healthy conditions for all employees. As a member of the global Toyota family, ASSB can therefore draw on healthcare advice and best practices from TMC regarding additional measures that can be taken here in Selangor,” said Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor.
