BMW X7 xDrive40i Pure Excellence CKD Arrives

2021 bmw x7

BMW Group Malaysia today previewed the locally assembled variant of the BMW X7 xDrive40i Pure Excellence.

After the extensive introduction of many high-profile locally assembled vehicles in the past year – including the BMW 218i Gran Coupé, the BMW 330e M Sport, and the BMW M340i xDrive – the move to localise the assembly of the largest model in the BMW X range further demonstrates the premium automaker’s longstanding confidence in Malaysia’s potential as a regional hub for the luxury automobile segment.

Features

The massive front with the imposing kidney grille lends an exceptional road presence to the vehicle, along with the slender BMW Laserlight headlights that can illuminate up to 600 metres ahead. Available as standard also are the LED fog lights and high-beam assistant.

From the side, the near-vertical shoulder line visually elongates the All-New BMW X7 xDrive40i Pure Excellence from the front to rear – with large windows and a long, dynamically flowing roofline that hints at a spacious interior. Equally striking are the 21-inch light alloy wheels in Y-spoke style 753 Bicolour with run-flat tyres, available as standard.

The variant also features a fully-electric tailgate in the rear with the Comfort Access feature, and two large, rectangular tailpipes – one on each side, conveying its immense power.

Powertrain

The All-New BMW X7 xDrive40i Pure Excellence also retains the powerful six-cylinder in-line petrol engine capable of a maximum power of 340hp and a peak torque of 450Nm.

Included in the sophisticated chassis design of the variant is a two-axle air suspension. With the DSC system, the vehicle load registered by the air suspension sensors can also be factored into braking modulation.

CBU VS CKD

Like the imported variant, the locally assembled variant of the All-New BMW X7 xDrive40i Pure Excellence is offered with the innovative Executive Drive Pro with active roll stabilisation. Ride comfort is further enhanced by the Dynamic Damper Control system, which is able to process data from the navigation system and front camera.

2021 bmw x7 ckd

The interior of the All-New BMW X7 xDrive40i Pure Excellence also features the opulent “Crafted Clarity” handmade diamond-cut trim element and a range of standard equipment including a sport leather steering wheel and electrically adjustable comfort seats with active seat ventilation in front.

The BMW Live Cockpit Professional with BMW Operating System 7.0 combines the fully digital, user-configurable 12.3-inch instrument cluster with an equally large central Control Display with touchscreen functionality.

2021 bmw x7 ckd

The BMW Head-Up Display is also located within field of vision. The variant is also fitted with the voice-controlled BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and BMW Gesture Control.

Other highlights include the Welcome Light Carpet feature, five-zone air conditioning, a Harman Kardon Surround Sound System with 16 loudspeakers and electric roller blinds for side windows.

2021 bmw x7 ckd

The Rear Entertainment Professional system is also available within the locally assembled variant, while the sheer spaciousness is further enhanced by the large Panorama Roof Sky Lounge.

The All-New BMW X7 xDrive40i Pure Excellence also features soft-close function for doors. Space is offered to the luxury SAV via a versatile 325-litre luggage compartment that can be maximised up to 2,120 litres with the backrests folded down.

2021 bmw x7 ckd

The All-New BMW X7 xDrive40i Pure Excellence is equipped with the BMW Personal CoPilot technology that includes the Parking Assistant Plus with automatic manoeuvring in and out of parallel parking spaces, along with the Reversing Assistant to assist in safely manoeuvring out of a tight parking space.

Driver Assistance

The Driving Assistant has been outfitted with a comprehensive range of functions, tailored to allow full ease of mind when on the drive. They include Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Warning and front collision warning with brake intervention.

2021 bmw x7

As a welcome addition, the All-New BMW X7 xDrive40i Pure Excellence also comes with Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function and Integral Active Steering, further enhancing the safety and comfort of the drive.

Other innovative features include the BMW Digital Key, wireless charging for mobile phones, as well as smartphone integration that are available as standard equipment for the locally assembled variant.

2021 bmw x7 ckd

The All-New BMW X7 xDrive40i Pure Excellence is offered in five exterior finishes to complement its sophisticated stature, with selected interior colour combinations.

The exterior colours of Black Sapphire and Sophisto Grey come in Cognac Leather Vernasca upholstery with Black design perforations, while Phytonic Blue and Manhattan Metallic exteriors come complete with an all-Black design-perforated Leather Vernasca interior.

2021 bmw x7 ckd

Lastly, Leather Vernasca in Coffee with Black design perforations comes exclusively with the Mineral White model.

Customers can register their interest for the All-New BMW X7 xDrive40i Pure Excellence starting 26th February 2021 on BMW Shop Online.

BMW Financial Services Contributes to Safety Programme

BMW Safety 360 Program

BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia has contributed over RM20,000 in donations to the BMW Safety 360° subsidy programme via customer contracts funded through its online financing platform – BMW Engage.

In October last year, the first-of-its-kind online financing platform introduced by BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia pledged on behalf of their customers to donate RM100 to the subsidy programme for every contract funded via the platform.

BMW Safety 360 program

“We are pleased to announce that we will be able to subsidise over 300 more child car seats for families in need, from donations raised on our platform in the last three months. We are especially grateful to our customers who have played a key role in contributing to this fundraising initiative.”

“Although there is less travel during this period, we want to continue accelerating the adoption of child safety seats to ensure children are safe on the road when travelling is allowed again,” said Tobias Eismann, Managing Director of BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia.

BMW Safety 360 Programme

First introduced in December 2019, the BMW Safety 360° subsidy programme recorded over 25,000 applications from parents in the B40 income group – signalling an urgency for child car seats accessibility in Malaysia.

BMW 360 safety programme

The programme later also garnered the support of Shopee who came on-board as the Exclusive E-Commerce Partner; baby and children goods brands, KU.KU Duckbill and Otomo; educational toys and games distributor, Mideer; food storage sealing solutions provider, Ankou as well as car performance parts and accessories provider, Kakimotor which further help drive the adoption rate of child car seats within the masses in Malaysia.

Each child car seat is made available with a RM50 subsidy and a RM13 delivery subsidy, in addition to a discounted price from Safe ‘n Sound that is exclusive for recipients of the subsidy programme.

Subsidy

As such, recipients of the subsidy programme will receive a unique Shopee voucher worth RM113 which can be applied upon checkout at this dedicated microsite.

“Despite the delay on the ruling for child car seat enforcement, BMW Group Malaysia continues in our effort to promote the adoption of child car seats via the BMW Safety 360° Programme.

We believe this is a shared responsibility not just amongst our partners, but the parents and the community around them as well, that can help ensure the highest level of safety on the road – even if travelling is restricted in the current climate,” said Sashi Ambi, Head of Corporate Communications at BMW Group Malaysia.

Ambi added, “Although the roads will be quieter this Chinese New Year, BMW Group Malaysia would like to wish all Malaysians a Happy Chinese New Year. We wish you and your loved ones safety, health and prosperity for this Year of the Ox.”

2021 BMW i4 Flaunts its Capabilities

bmw i4

In an effort to let the whole world know that their electric sedans are just as fun as their fuel-burning, fire-spitting, ever-roaring, M3s, M4s and what not, BMW has released a video of the upcoming i4 showing off its capabilities.

“For the first time, we’ve developed a BMW with sporty DNA for purely electric driving entirely from scratch,” explains project manager David Alfredo Ferrufino Camacho.

“The BMW i4 offers everything BMW stands for – and it’s fully electric, too.”

With just a few months left before its world premiere, the BMW i4 is currently completing the final phase of driving dynamics testing.

Special calibration

According to BMW, the focus is on the integrated application of all drive and suspension components, ensuring that the spontaneous power delivery of the electric motor is combined with precisely controllable handling in every situation, optimised traction in all weather and road conditions, and perfectly balanced ride comfort.

BMW i4

With a maximum output of up to 530 hp, the electric powertrain in the BMW i4 enables the car to reach the 100 km/h mark in just four seconds from standstill. But even more impressive than its pure sprint capacity is the driving response it conveys.

A model-specific damper technology reduces the dipping movements of the body at the moment of set-off, while the actuator-related wheel slip limitation (ARB) developed by BMW with its extremely fast and precise control guarantees optimum traction and perfect straight-line stability at all times – even on slippery road surfaces.

BMW i4

Key features

Other key features include its spontaneous reactions to every movement – not just of the accelerator pedal but also of the steering and the brake pedal. The prerequisites for this high level of agility and precision are anchored in the underlying vehicle concept of the BMW i4.

This includes the car’s long wheelbase, wide track widths, model-specific camber values, large wheels, as well as the high torsional rigidity and the vehicle’s low centre of gravity and weight balance.

BMW i4

In addition to its neutral self-steering behaviour and its powerful, precisely controllable brakes, the steering in the BMW i4 responds directly and with a high degree of accuracy, offering the driver precise feedback at all times while remaining entirely independent of drive forces, even during intensive acceleration or deceleration.

Comfort

Lane changes at high speeds are mastered with ease, while relaxed driving over long distances is ensured by the speed-related Servotronic power steering and the fact that the vehicle is largely insusceptible to any disruption caused by road bumps.

Fitted with a high-voltage storage system featuring the latest battery cell technology that enables a range of up to 600 kilometres (WLTP), the chassis technology of the BMW i4 is designed for long-distance comfort, too. It is based on the high-quality damper technology, supplemented with model-specific components and separately tuned.

bmw i4

This effectively reduces body vibrations due to road unevenness and on bends. The model-specific fine-tuning of the suspension and damping contributes significantly to the harmonious driving characteristics of the BMW i4.

Made in Munich

At the same time as the final calibration runs are being held, preparations are underway for the production start-up at BMW Group Plant Munich. Here, every single production step is currently undergoing validation before the BMW i4 receives its final stamp of approval for characteristic BMW delivery quality.

As funky as they make it sound, do you think that the i4 will be able to fill in the shoes of the 3-Series and the 4-Series in the future?

The BMW X2 M Mesh Edition also brings special entry sills with “Edition” inscription. The optional panoramic roof, which floods the cabin with light, can be tilted and opened like a conventional sunroof.

BMW Unveils Digital Key Plus

BMW Digital Key Plus

While most manufacturers are still depending keys and key fobs to unlock and operate their models, BMW took things to the next level back in 2018 when they said that owners can just use their iPhones as a BMW Digital Key, and the feature just got even better.

The feature, which is still available exclusively for iPhones, has been further improvised by the folks at Munich to make things more convenient for future customers.

In line with this goal, the premium car manufacturer will introduce the BMW Digital Key Plus, a convenient and secure way to unlock and start your car without taking your iPhone out of your bag or pocket.

In case you’re wondering what is new, this latest incarnation of the service is based on Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, which is found on the U1 chip of iPhone.

The UWB technology is a short-range, high-bandwidth digital radio technology that is characterized by an exceptionally precise localization with the greatest possible security.

UWB’s precision also ensures that relay attacks, where the radio signal is jammed or intercepted, are not possible.

Apple and BMW said that they have been working closely with the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) to establish the Digital Key specification 3.0 for UWB, providing a global standard for the automotive industry.

The BMW Digital Key Plus feature will be first launched with the all-electric BMW iX for iPhone.

BMW Digital Key Plus iX

The iX is BMW’s first model based on a new, modular and scalable future BMW Group construction concept, powered by two electric motors that generate a maximum power output of more than 500 hp.

Powered by the fifth generation BMW eDrive technology that comprises two electric motors, the iX is capable of kicking out 500 hp and accelerating from naught to 100 in under 5.0 seconds.

The powertrain also enables the BMW iX to record a range of over 600 kilometres in the WLTP cycle. The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent of its full capacity in under 40 minutes using DC fast charging at up to 200 kW.

Added to which, within ten minutes enough energy can be fed into the battery to increase the car’s range by more than 120 kilometres. It takes less than eleven hours to charge the high-voltage battery from 0 to 100 per cent at 11 kW from a Wallbox.

The BMW iX will go into production at BMW Plant Dingolfing from the second half of 2021 as the BMW Group’s new technology flagship. It brings together the company’s latest developments in the strategic innovation fields of Design, Automated Driving, Connectivity, Electrification and Services.

The folks at BMW claim that they are setting new industry standards with the technology in the BMW iX, with things like the high computing power for data processing, more powerful sensor technology than the current line-up, 5G-connectivity, as well as new and improved automated driving and parking functions.

Review: G12 BMW 7 Series 740Le xDrive

BMW 740le

When you reach a point in life where you can purchase a vehicle for more than half-a-million Ringgit, it is no longer just about getting from point A to point B. Every now and then, you have to do it in style and also make a statement that you’ve made it in life.

And speaking of making a statement, not many vehicles out there can come close to what can be achieved by this car here – the new G12 BMW 7 Series.

Well, the G12 is not exactly brand new, as it has been slightly more than a year since it made its Malaysian debut in the sole form of the 740Le xDrive with an asking price of RM598,800.

bmw 740le rear

Thanks to the ongoing SST exemption which is expected to last until June 2021, the 7 Series is currently priced at an interesting RM569,052 on the road without insurance, which is about RM23,000 cheaper compared to its main rival – the Mercedes-Benz S560e that is priced at RM646,625 on the road without insurance, minus SST. Both cars are assembled locally by the way.

bmw 740le rims

In case you’re wondering what else you will get as an owner, there is the five-year unlimited mileage warranty with free scheduled service programme, a two-year tyre warranty programme, BMW Roadside Assistance, BMW Service Online, as well as the BMW White Card program with Loyalty+ Mobile App access.

bmw 740le side profile

So, the main highlight of the G12 BMW 7 Series here is without a doubt, the face of the car itself. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the world stopped for a second and went “what the…” when the car’s grille was revealed.

bmw 740le xdrive

Compared to the pre-facelift model, the kidney grille is 40% larger than before, and to make it even more striking, BMW made the headlights 30% slimmer. Now, there are two reasons why BMW went berserk with the 7-Series’ grille.

bmw 740le grille

Firstly, unlike Mercedes-Benz’s sedans which all look alike when seen from a distance, BMW wanted the 7-Series to clearly stand out from the 3-Series and also the 5-Series.

We think that BMW absolutely nailed it with this one, as you’ll be able to tell that it’s a 7-Series even if you spot it from another planet.

bmw 740le lights

The second reason is actually China, the country in which the most number of 7 Series are sold in the world (41% of global sales). We were told that there was a demand for a grille that is even bigger and wider, and a face that would intimidate people with other cars, especially the S-Class.

bmw 740le seats

The grille aside, the BMW emblem on the hood is noticeably larger than before, the air breathers on the side are more upright, the taillights are new and slimmer, and there is a new LED light bar that runs across the rear, giving the 7 Series a much more stylish and elegant outlook.

bmw 740le interior

While the BMW 7 Series is available in M Performance and Luxury Line trims globally, the Malaysian market only gets the latter (disguised as the Design Pure Excellence package) as the Datuks and Taukays here prefer things to be more luxurious and less sporty.

bmw 740le live cockpit pro

Overall, what we have here is a car that is designed to be either loved or hated; there is no in-between. While we absolutely love the monstrous grille, many are still having nightmares about it.

bmw 740le tailllight

So, in terms of design, if you want things to be low-key and subtle, you may want to look the S-Class’ way, but if you want everyone to stop and turn towards you when you arrive, this is it.

bmw 740le gear

Moving inside, the list of new features includes BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional system that comes with a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, and a 12.3-inch central primary display that comprises the latest BMW Operating System 7.0, BMW Navigation System Pro, and the BMW Connected Package Pro systems.

bmw 740le live cockpit professional

Also new is the redesigned iDrive controller, the steering wheel, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant that supports voice command and hand gestures, the Sky Lounge panoramic glass roof, the BMW Display Key, as well as the Harman Kardon 16-speaker premium audio system.

bmw 740le air cond

Other highlights include the rear entertainment system with two 10-inch display screens that are larger than before, a Samsung tablet to control the infotainment system from the rear seats, massage function in the rear, and a generous dose of Nappa leather upholstery.

bmw 740le rear seats

From the driver’s seat, what we love the most about the 7 Series is that it doesn’t feel like we’re driving a big car. Thanks to the good visibility, ergonomically positioned controls, the user friendly infotainment system, comfortable yet supportive seats, and the surprisingly sharp and responsive ride, we got used to the car and got comfortable in it in no time.

Plus, there were cameras and sensors all around the car to help us manoeuvre the behemoth through tight spots and parking lots with ease.

bmw 740le rear seat entertainment

If we are to compare the 7’s interior with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, it is safe to say that the 7 Series is superior in terms of driving dynamics, but when it comes to comfort and refinement, there is still some catching up to do with the S.

But that does not mean that the 7 Series is not an enjoyable car to be in. All you need to do is wait for the sun to go down, get into the rear seats, turn on the ambient lights, the Sky Lounge lights, whatever light that you can turn on, and let the Harman Kardon audio system do its thing – the car literally transforms into a club on wheels, and makes you forget all the problems in life for a brief moment.

bmw 740le driving mode

What we didn’t like, however, was the fact that we could occasionally hear the wind and the road while being on the move, especially at higher speeds. But as long as we stayed within the speed limits, the cabin was super quiet.

Speaking of speeds, moving the 740Le here is a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six petrol engine that replaces the previous 2.0-litre 4-cylinder mill. Paired to an 8-speed Steptronic gearbox, the new engine produces 286 PS and 450 Nm of torque, which is 28 PS and 50 Nm more than before.

bmw 740le engine

But that’s not all as there is a new and more powerful electric motor that produces 113 PS and 265 Nm of torque in the mix. Together, the engine and the motor deliver a total of 394 PS and 600 Nm of torque, which is 58 PS and 100 Nm more than the version before this.

Sending the power to all four wheels is BMW’s xDrive AWD system which comes as standard. Also new is the 12 kWh lithium-ion battery that takes the place of the previous 9.2 kWh unit, which can be charged in just under five hours using BMW’s optional i Wallbox charger.

bmw 740le sunroof

There are five driving modes to choose from – Sport, Hybrid, Electric, Adaptive, and Battery Control. While Sport and Electric modes are pretty much self-explanatory, Hybrid is the standard mode upon start-up which gives the best of both worlds, but with minimum fuel usage as the priority.

Adaptive mode on the other hand adapts to the current driving style, while Battery Control mode reserves a certain amount of battery charge which is pre-determined by the driver to be used in the near future – to sneak out of the house at night, for example.

Throughout our stint with the car, we were mostly in Hybrid mode, cruising, enjoying the comfort and plushness of the 7 Series. We did try out the Sports mode which unleashes the full potential of the engine, but it just didn’t feel right.

Despite its size, the 7 Series is anything but slow. The fact that it can sprint from naught to 100 in under six seconds, which is as quick as cars that are much smaller like the M135i, Mercedes-AMG A35, and the Porsche Cayman, shows just how quick the limousine can be if it wants to.

In a nutshell, the 7 Series may be just a “facelift” but the amount of updates that has gone into the car is quite extensive. The new and aggressive front fascia, the juicier engine, the more capable electric motor and battery, and all the new tech that have been integrated into the car is almost on par with what we get in some cars that have gone through a full model-change, making it feel as new as any other new BMW model in the stable.

So, if you’re someone who lives by the adage “go big or go home”, the new 7 Series 740Le is what you should get your hands on.

BMW iX Undergoes Final Testing

BMW iX

All set to enter production next year, the BMW iX pure electric SUV is now ready for the final winter testing, and if all goes well, the model’s series production process could even begin ahead of schedule.

The iX is BMW’s first model based on a new, modular and scalable future BMW Group construction concept, powered by two electric motors that generate a maximum power output of more than 500 hp.

The endurance test, which is being held under extreme weather conditions beyond the Arctic Circle, will put the electric motors, four-wheel drive system, charging technology, high-voltage batteries, and the heat management system to the ultimate test under sub-zero temperatures.

Unsecured tracks, icy roads and ice surfaces especially prepared for test-driving on the edge of the Arctic Circle offer the ideal conditions to precisely coordinate the motor control technology, the electric four-wheel drive and suspension control systems right up to the limits of longitudinal and lateral vehicle dynamics.

An integral part of the endurance test at the North Cape is also the final tuning of the intelligent four-wheel drive system BMW xDrive and adaptive adjustment of the axle-specific yaw moment, which in addition to stability and traction also constantly optimizes the BMW iX’s efficiency.

The aim of the development is to achieve an extremely low combined power consumption of less than 21 kWh per 100 kilometres in the WLTP test cycle and a range of more than 600 kilometres, likewise according to WLTP, values which are untypical of this class.

BMW iX

The BMW iX will go into production at BMW Plant Dingolfing from the second half of 2021 as the BMW Group’s new technology flagship. It brings together the company’s latest developments in the strategic innovation fields of Design, Automated Driving, Connectivity, Electrification and Services.

The folks at BMW claim that they are setting new industry standards with the technology in the BMW iX, with things like the high computing power for data processing, more powerful sensor technology than the current line-up, 5G-connectivity, as well as new and improved automated driving and parking functions.
