Malaysia-spec trucks come with AEB, ESP, EBS with ABS and traction control as standard

Scania’s R-series and P-series trucks have earned five-star safety ratings from Euro NCAP’s Safer Trucks programme, with both ranges demonstrating strong performance in collision avoidance and driver assistance systems.

The recognition covers the Scania R-series 4×2 tractor and 6×2 rigid truck, as well as the P-series 4×2 distribution and 6×2 utility models. Both truck ranges also received Euro NCAP’s CitySafe award for safety features designed to help prevent accidents, particularly in urban environments.

In Malaysia, Scania is raising the bar further by making several key active safety systems standard across its trucks. These include Advanced Emergency Braking (AEB), Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Electronic Braking System (EBS) with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and traction control.

Scania Southeast Asia Presales & Logistics Director Johan Clason said the company believes truck safety should go beyond regulatory requirements, with advanced safety equipment helping protect drivers and other road users while improving vehicle uptime and productivity.

R-Series scores 96% in collision avoidance

The Scania R-series achieved its five-star rating through strong results in Euro NCAP’s Safe Driving and Collision Avoidance categories.

Its safety equipment includes Speed Sign Cruise Control (SSCC) and Curve Speed Cruise Control (CSCC), which help drivers manage speed according to road conditions and posted limits. These systems work alongside Safe Stop Assist (SSA), while AEB and the Vulnerable Road User Brake System (VRUBS) contribute to accident prevention.

The R-series recorded a 96% score in collision avoidance. Optional camera monitor systems were also fitted to the tested trucks, improving visibility around the front corners and reducing the workload on drivers.

Scania Head of Trucks Lars Gustafsson said long-distance transport safety depends on a combination of driver support, visibility, comfort, assistance systems and vehicle control.

P-Series designed for safer urban operations

The Scania P-series also secured five stars, with its 4×2 distribution and 6×2 utility variants achieving the highest possible rating.

It also received top marks in Euro NCAP’s CitySafe assessment, reflecting its focus on protecting vulnerable road users in urban environments.

The P-series benefits from a low cab position that improves the driver’s view of surrounding traffic, complemented by a corner-eye camera system. These features help drivers spot pedestrians, cyclists and other road users who may otherwise be difficult to see.

Its updated collision avoidance systems achieved an overall score of 93%. These include technologies designed to mitigate frontal collisions, prevent lane departures and reduce risks to vulnerable road users.

The VRUBS system, which helps protect cyclists during turning manoeuvres involving the side of the truck, achieved a perfect 100% score in its assessment.

What about Malaysia?

According to Scania, the Euro NCAP results reinforce its approach to improving safety while delivering transport solutions that support operational efficiency and profitability.

Alongside standard safety equipment, the company continues to offer customers solutions aimed at improving fuel efficiency, vehicle uptime and overall productivity.

For Malaysian transport operators, the move to make key active safety systems standard adds another layer of protection for drivers and other road users, while supporting the industry’s wider push towards safer and more sustainable road transport.
