GWM Malaysia has exported more than 1,100 locally assembled WEY G9 MPVs to Thailand and Indonesia, as the company surpasses 10,000 vehicles assembled locally since beginning contract manufacturing in October 2024.

Announced on 21 October 2026, the milestones highlight GWM’s expanding manufacturing operations in Malaysia and its growing role in the company’s regional strategy.

The exports also mark a shift beyond supplying the domestic market, with Malaysia increasingly serving as a production base for GWM vehicles destined for other ASEAN countries.

Three locally assembled models

GWM began local assembly in 2024 with the HAVAL H6 HEV, working with EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) in Melaka.

The programme expanded in 2025 with the introduction of the locally assembled WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV. GWM has since added the WEY G9 Hi4 HEV, broadening its locally assembled hybrid lineup.

The WEY G9 is GWM’s flagship luxury MPV, combining hybrid powertrain technology with premium comfort and all-wheel-drive capability. Its exports to Thailand and Indonesia represent the latest step in the company’s efforts to extend its Malaysian manufacturing operations across the region.

GWM Malaysia managing director for commercial operations Stan Li Hao said the progress from local assembly to regional exports reflected the capabilities developed with Malaysian partners.

Building Malaysia’s automotive manufacturing capabilities

Beyond production numbers, GWM said its local assembly operations support technical knowledge transfer, workforce development and greater participation by Malaysian industry players.

Since entering Malaysia in 2022, the company has expanded its vehicle lineup, dealer network and assembly activities as part of its longer-term growth plans.

GWM Malaysia managing director for corporate affairs Cui Anqi said Malaysia was becoming an increasingly important part of the company’s regional manufacturing and growth strategy.

Chief operating officer Roslan Abdullah added that surpassing 10,000 locally assembled vehicles reflected progress made alongside its manufacturing partners, while creating opportunities for Malaysia’s automotive industry.

The latest milestones strengthen GWM’s presence in Malaysia while positioning the country as a regional manufacturing and export base for its expanding New Energy Vehicle portfolio.
