Proton’s momentum in 2026 shows no signs of slowing down as the national carmaker recorded another strong month of sales growth, led by the enduring popularity of the Proton Saga and the rapid rise of its electrified vehicle lineup.
The company delivered 16,995 vehicles in May 2026, a figure that stands out even more considering Malaysia’s Total Industry Volume (TIV) is estimated to have declined by 15.4% compared to April. While the overall market softened, Proton continued to move in the opposite direction, strengthening its position as one of the country’s fastest-growing automotive brands.
For the first five months of 2026, Proton’s cumulative sales reached 84,294 units, representing a substantial 38% increase compared to the same period last year. This translates to an estimated market share of 26.7%, highlighting the brand’s ability to capture new customers despite challenging market conditions.
Proton Saga Returns To The Top
The biggest story from May was undoubtedly the return of the Proton Saga as Malaysia’s best-selling vehicle.
A total of 7,398 units of the popular A-segment sedan were delivered during the month, allowing it to reclaim the title from its rivals and reaffirm its status as the nation’s favourite car.

More than four decades after its debut, the Saga continues to resonate with Malaysian buyers thanks to its combination of affordability, practicality, proven reliability and increasingly modern features.
The model’s performance has been equally impressive over the longer term. Year-to-date sales now stand at 37,375 units, representing a remarkable 41% increase compared to the first five months of 2025.
The achievement is particularly significant as the Saga continues to compete in an increasingly crowded market where buyers now have access to a wider range of compact sedans, hatchbacks and entry-level SUVs. Despite this, the model remains a go-to choice for first-time buyers, families and fleet operators alike.
S70 And X50 Continue Strong Run
Beyond the Saga, Proton’s other internal combustion engine models also delivered encouraging results.
The Proton S70 continued its strong momentum with 2,350 units sold in May. The C-segment sedan has now exceeded the 2,000-unit sales mark for three consecutive months, a feat it managed only once throughout 2025. Year-to-date sales have climbed to 10,525 units, putting the model 32.5% ahead of last year’s pace.

Meanwhile, the Proton X50 retained its position as one of Malaysia’s most popular SUVs. Deliveries reached 2,793 units in May, bringing cumulative sales for the year to 12,967 units, an increase of 33.6% over the same period in 2025.
The recently updated Proton X90 also continued to gain traction following the introduction of its new i-GT powertrain and enhanced connectivity package earlier this year. With 402 units sold in May, the flagship SUV remains the leader in the D-segment SUV category and has recorded year-to-date growth of 38.6%.
Electrified Models Continue To Gain Ground
While the Saga remains Proton’s volume champion, the company’s growing electrified portfolio is becoming an increasingly important contributor to overall sales.
Combined deliveries of Proton e.MAS models reached 3,022 units in May across domestic and export markets, bringing cumulative sales to 14,687 units in the first five months of the year.

Leading the charge is the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV, which recorded 1,181 deliveries in May. Just four months after its launch, the model has already established itself as Malaysia’s best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle, with total sales reaching 2,936 units.
The fully electric Proton e.MAS 7 also enjoyed a strong month with 958 units delivered, reclaiming its position as Malaysia’s best-selling EV for May as local assembly operations continue to stabilise.
Meanwhile, the Proton e.MAS 5 remained the country’s top-selling EV on a year-to-date basis, with 9,357 units delivered so far in 2026.
Growing Against The Market
The contrast between Proton’s performance and the broader automotive market is perhaps the clearest indicator of the company’s current momentum.

While industry volume has contracted by an estimated 1.4% year-to-date, Proton has expanded by 38%, gaining market share through a combination of strong ICE offerings and an increasingly competitive range of electrified vehicles.
With the Saga once again leading Malaysia’s sales charts, the X50 dominating its segment and the e.MAS range setting the pace in the EV and PHEV markets, Proton appears well-positioned to continue its growth trajectory for the remainder of 2026.
