Proton has taken another step in its global expansion strategy with the debut of the Proton X50 in Trinidad and Tobago, marking the B-segment SUV’s second export market after its introduction in Brunei earlier this year.
Launched in Port of Spain in collaboration with local distributor ANSA Motors, the move underscores PROTON’s growing export ambitions as it continues to build momentum beyond its home market.
The X50 has already established itself as a strong contender in Malaysia, and the version heading to the Caribbean carries the same formula that made it a success — a blend of performance, efficiency, and accessible technology.
Under the bonnet, the SUV is powered by Proton’s 1.5-litre i-GT turbocharged three-cylinder engine, delivering 181PS and 290Nm of torque. Paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, the setup promises brisk acceleration alongside commendable efficiency, with a claimed fuel consumption figure of 6.1L/100km. This balance makes the X50 well-suited for both city commutes and longer highway drives.
Visually, the latest iteration features a sharper, more assertive exterior design, giving it a stronger road presence. Inside, the cabin adopts a more modern, tech-focused layout, headlined by an upgraded infotainment system designed to improve connectivity and overall user experience.

Safety continues to be a major selling point. The X50 comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including a 360-degree camera and intelligent parking assist, aimed at enhancing driver confidence and occupant protection.
According to ANSA Motors, the X50’s value proposition is one of its strongest assets. The SUV is positioned as a premium yet attainable offering, bringing advanced features and driving refinement to a broader audience in Trinidad and Tobago.
The launch also highlights the importance of export markets to PROTON’s long-term growth. In 2025, the company recorded export volumes of 6,000 units — its highest since partnering with Geely — signalling a positive trajectory for its international business.
Trinidad and Tobago is seen as a strategic entry point into the Caribbean region, with PROTON aiming to leverage the market’s growth potential while strengthening its global distribution network. Moving forward, the brand plans to expand its export lineup further, including both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) offerings.
With the X50 now making inroads into new territories, PROTON’s global ambitions are becoming increasingly clear — and this is only the beginning.
