Proton X50 Crosses 161,000 Sales Mark, Remains Segment Best-Seller

The Proton X50 continues to prove it is far more than just a hot-selling SUV, with cumulative sales now reaching 161,033 units, further cementing its place as Malaysia’s best-selling B-segment SUV.

More impressively, the X50 has managed to hold that crown for five consecutive years, no small feat in a segment now packed with rivals and new challengers.

For the first two months of 2026 alone, Proton delivered 4,271 units, showing that demand for the compact SUV remains strong even as buyers today have more choices than ever before.

When it first arrived in October 2020, the X50 did more than just give Proton a new SUV to sell. It effectively changed public perception of what a Proton could be. For many Malaysians, it was the first Proton in years that genuinely felt modern, desirable, and competitive against established Japanese and Chinese rivals.

According to Proton, the updated 2025 Proton X50, which was launched in July last year, has already racked up more than 20,000 units sold, suggesting the facelifted model has kept the momentum going instead of merely riding on the original car’s success.

Part of the X50’s continued appeal comes down to the fact that it still speaks directly to what B-segment SUV buyers want: sharp styling, turbocharged performance, modern connectivity, and plenty of safety kit, all at a price point that still feels attainable for young professionals and small families.

Proton says 68 percent of owners are aged between 25 and 35, underlining the SUV’s popularity among first-time buyers, young executives, and growing families. More notably, a large chunk of these customers are said to be new to the Proton brand, which shows the X50 has not just sold well, but has also helped Proton win over buyers who may have previously looked elsewhere.

Owner feedback also seems to back up the hype. Proton claims the X50 has scored an 89 percent usage satisfaction rating, with more than 70 percent of buyers saying design and performance were the biggest reasons behind their purchase.

It was also the first Proton to get the new 1.5-litre i-GT four-cylinder turbocharged engine, producing 181 PS and 290 Nm of torque, giving it a stronger performance edge while also improving efficiency. It also introduced Bahasa Melayu voice recognition, alongside the long-awaited arrival of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Those upgrades may sound small on paper, but in today’s market, they are exactly the kind of things buyers notice, especially in a segment where in-car tech is now almost as important as the badge on the bonnet.

The X50 has also quietly played a useful role beyond Malaysia. Proton says over 5,000 units have been exported so far, making it one of the company’s stronger performers in overseas markets and an important contributor to the brand’s regional ambitions.
