Proton to Pursue Export Markets in 2021

Proton Export

Proton recently announced that it has set its sights on growing the brand’s export sales in 2021.

The export market is a vital part of Proton’s long-term goal to be the third best-selling automotive brand in ASEAN by 2027.

Spearheading the expansion will be Proton’s most popular model, the Proton Saga, followed by the Proton X70 and Proton X50 as they are gradually introduced to more overseas markets.

A flurry of activity in December that included the beginning of CKD operations in Kenya and the launch of the Proton X70 in Pakistan saw export sales end the year with an increase of nearly 50% compared to domestic sales that grew by 8.8%.

Proton Export

For the coming year, the company has set itself another challenging target of doubling export sales over 2020, assuming that export activities are not overly hampered by restrictions due to the global pandemic.

Exports to power Proton’s future

While sales leadership in the domestic market will always be a main priority, the company recognises that in order to grow for the future, it needs to expand its customer base and search for sales in other countries. Charged with the task of leading the overseas expansion is Steven Xu, Proton’s director of international sales.

“Over the last two years, Proton’s international sales division has been aggressively pursuing export sales in numerous markets. We have deployed multiple strategies to achieve our goals, from shipping CBU vehicles built in Malaysia to inking agreements with local conglomerates to assemble CKD cars to benefit from local tax incentives.

Proton Export

“We targeted to see significant gains in 2020 but those plans were affected by Covid-19. Still, we managed to grow our export volume, enter new markets such as Kenya and even launch the Proton X50 in Brunei barely two months after its Malaysian debut so there are many positives to take in to the new calendar year,” said Steven Xu.

One of the keys to growing exports is having products that appeal to a number of different markets and to comply with the needs of the market. For instance, the Proton Saga exported in Pakistan uses a 1299cc engine instead of the bigger 1332cc motor used in Malaysia as small capacity vehicles are popular. The same model is also sold in Nepal as it was also developed with a heater, a vital component for markets with cold winter months.

Brand image

The Proton X70 and Proton X50 meanwhile help to project a sophisticated brand image. Armed with advanced software, a voice command interface and a comprehensive driver assist package, both SUVs compete against rivals from Japanese and Korean brands and help define PROTON’s messaging in markets where building consumer education remains as a vital step.

“The Proton Saga remains a popular model in many countries due to its hardiness, practicality and value for money proposition but in order to lift our brand image, it is important for our newer models such as the Proton X70 and Proton X50 to also be exported. This will show car buyers what the company is capable of and help pave the way for us to sell other models in the future to fill up the range,” added Steven.

Collaborating for mutual success

While Proton’s distributors and importers in its export markets are owned by local entities, it works closely with them to ensure there is a cohesive market introduction, promotion and product launch plan to suit local market conditions.

By building a consistent brand image, the company is taking steps towards being a global entity and paving the way towards penetration in other regions in the future. As the CEO of Proton Edar, Roslan Abdullah is not only responsible for Proton’s sales volume but also for the marketing and promotion of the brand.

“By working closely with our foreign partners, we aim to present a consistent message in all our export markets and ultimately, this will make it easier for the Proton brand name to establish itself in even more countries. This is in line with our aim to promote Malaysia and its vendors on a regional and global level and ultimately, this will raise their competitiveness and benefit the economy as a whole,” he added.

Viral Proton X50 Bumblebee Crashes

proton x50 bumblebee

As we were browsing through the internet, looking for interesting stuff to share with you on this mundane Monday, pictures of a car crash involving a vehicle that is quite popular in Malaysia started making waves in WhatsApp as well as Facebook. After having a closer look, it turns out that the vehicle is none other than the Proton X50 “Bumblebee” which went viral a few months ago.

While there were not many details on what caused the crash, the images suggest that the vehicle lost control and hit the divider along a PLUS highway last night. From what we can see, the rain and wet surface could also have played a role.

Owner is safe

On the bright side, the owner walked out of the scene unharmed. There was even a picture of him posing next to the Bumblebee on the tow truck, giving a thumbs up and bidding farewell to his beloved X50 Bumblebee. The vehicle however, has clearly taken some serious damage.

So, whether the X50 can be brought back to life shall remain a question for now.

Why is this car so famous?

Anyway, the Proton X50 “Bumblebee” actually went viral last November, which was about a month after the SUV was launched officially by Proton. While many owners were still waiting for the deliveries of their X50, the owner of this unit, who was one of the first owners in the country, went all out and spent more than RM50,000 on his X50 into the “Bumblebee” you’re looking at right here.

Since the X50 was a trending topic, almost every automotive and news portal out there featured the X50 “Bumblebee”, making it arguably the most popular X50 in Malaysia in a matter of days. In case you’re wondering what’s so special about this X50, let’s look at all the things the owner has done to the car.

The modifications

On the exterior, the X50, which is a 1.5 TGDi flagship variant, features a Satin Yellow wrap, with all the chrome bits blacked out. And then we have the large brakes taken from vehicles like the Cadillac CTS-V, Michelin tyres, some funky 20-inch wheels, modified lights, as well as an upgraded exhaust system.

Inside, the Bumblebee has been fitted with a generous dose of aftermarket Alcantara upholstery on the dashboard, door panels, and the centre console. The audio system has also been upgraded. Last but not least, the owner also fitted an aftermarket tuning chip, increasing the X50’s output by 22 PS and 35 Nm of torque. So, it is safe to say that this was no way your “biasa-biasa” X50 with some cosmetic upgrades.

Whatever it is, we are glad that the owner walked away safely from the mishap.

With GoCar Subs’ ‘SWAP’, customers have flexibility of swapping to any model in the garage, with the option of two swaps per year. All they have to do is make a one-time swapping fee of RM250 and they will have access to three different models to suit their needs. Proton to Ramp Up Global Sales

2019 Proton Saga

Proton today announced that its export business has grown by 10.6% this year compared to 2019, despite global restrictions put in place to curb the coronavirus pandemic.

But that is not all, as Proton will be further growing its presence internationally with few upcoming launches in various markets.

In this month itself, Proton will be launching the new Saga in Bangladesh, Egypt, as well as Nepal, followed by the Proton X50 which is expected to make its debut in Brunei within the next few weeks.

“While local market leadership is one of our targets, it is equally vital for the Proton brand to build up its presence internationally, representing both the company and Malaysia. This was part of the 10-year plan that was devised at the beginning of our strategic partnership with Geely,” said Dato’ Sri Syed Faisal Albar, Chairman of Proton Holdings Berhad.

“However, parts of the export plans were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic as each country had different responses and restrictions. Still, thanks to our diligent work and the strong support of various government agencies, we are finally getting back on track. Therefore, in just a few short weeks, we will be announcing the commencement of CKD and sales operations in Kenya and Pakistan as well as the international market debut of the Proton X50 in Brunei,” he added.

2020 Proton X50

Exports of Proton cars began with the Proton Saga in 1989 and since then, 405,267 units have been sold in various markets globally.

As of the end of November 2020, the number of Proton vehicles exported to other countries had already exceeded the total from the year before, and the upwards trend is expected to continue in the near future.

PROTON TO GROW EXPORTS IN 2021

While PROTON has continued to buck the local industry trend with steady
growth in 2020, its export activities have also been able to sustain some momentum.

PROTON’s export business has grown 10.6% so far this year despite global restrictions put in place to curb the coronavirus pandemic. As the company strives to meet strong local demand for its products in December, traditionally the best month for automotive sales, PROTON will also be growing its presence internationally thanks to an unprecedented launch
schedule.

As many as five market introductions will take place in the coming weeks with one marking the export market debut of the Proton X50, and another two signifying the kick-off for local assembly and sales of Proton vehicles
in other markets.

Still, thanks to our diligent work and the strong support of various government
agencies, we are finally getting back on track. Therefore, in just a few short weeks, we will be announcing the commencement of CKD and sales operations in Kenya and Pakistan as well as the international market debut
of the Proton X50 in Brunei,” he added.

Aside from the aforementioned countries, Bangladesh and Egypt will also be hosting virtual product launches for the current Proton Saga this month. This will be followed by a similar launch to occur in Nepal just as the year
draws to a close.

Exports of PROTON cars began with the Proton Saga in 1989 and since then, 405,267 units have been sold in various markets globally. At the end of November 2020, the number of PROTON vehicles exported to other countries had already exceeded the total from the year before.

Proton X70 is Still Brand’s Best-Selling SUV

2020 Proton X70

Proton has just announced its monthly sales figures for the month of November with a grand total of 11,411 vehicles sold.

Out of the total, the best-seller was the Saga with 4,279 units, followed by the Proton X70 with 2,157 units sold. The next best-selling Proton for November was the Persona with 1,942 units, followed by the new X50 with 1,756 units. As for the Exora and Iriz, Proton sold 629 units and 637 units each respectively.

Among all the models mentioned above, only the Proton X70 and the Proton Exora were the best-sellers in their respective segments. Having received more than 27,000 bookings since its launch, the Proton X50 is second only to the Perodua Aruz in as far as the B-segment SUV category is concerned, but if you want to argue that the Aruz is a seven-seater, then the X50 can be considered as the segment best-seller for the month of November.

proton x50

Compared to October 2020, Proton’s monthly sales did see a slight drop but on the bright side, the X50 seems to have gained some traction, and the numbers can only be expected to rise in the near future.

Although Proton admitted that deliveries of the Proton X50 have not ramped up to maximum capacity, the company is positive that it will finish the year strong as Malaysian car sales are continuing to outperform market projections from earlier in the year, thanks to the Penjana incentive by the government.

PRESS RELEASE

PROTON CONTINUES SALES GROWTH IN NOVEMBER

Subang Jaya, 1 December 2020 – As 2020 draws to a close, sales of Proton cars continue its growth trajectory towards a strong year end finish. 11,411 units (domestic and export) were sold in November, a growth rate of 18% over the same month in 2019, contributing to a total sales figure of 96,410 units in 2020. The latter figure is an overall increase of 7.5% and is equivalent to an estimated market share of 20.1%.

While sales for other Proton models for the month were slightly down compared to October, deliveries of the all new Proton X50 began to gather momentum. 1,756 units were delivered, making it the best-selling B-segment (five-seat) SUV in Malaysia and when combined with 2,157 units of the Proton X70, it makes PROTON the sales leader for SUVs overall.

Strong year end numbers lead to cautious optimism for 2021

“Malaysian car sales are continuing to outperform market projections from earlier in the year as we estimate Total-

Industry-Volume (TIV) to be more than 56,000 units for a third consecutive month. A lot of this can be accounted

for by traditional end-of-year deals offered by car brands, but this year we can include PENJANA incentives and the launch of popular new models such as the Proton X50 as volume growth drivers.

“For PROTON specifically, we are continuing to focus on product quality and customer service to deliver a premium product and brand experience. Admittedly, deliveries of the Proton X50 have not ramped up to maximum capacity, but we are being deliberate in our approach to ensure our customers get the best product that meets their expectations, Still, we target to increase our volume each month to shorten waiting times so we urge everyone to please remain patient,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer, Proton Edar.

Export sales exceed 2019 total despite Coronavirus restrictions

One of PROTON’s main pillars for the future is the growth of export sales as the company seeks a larger footprint outside of Malaysia. 2020 was supposed to be another year of steady growth in this area but these plans were affected by the global Corona virus pandemic.

Still, by the end of November, the number of Proton vehicles exported to other countries had already exceeded the total from the year before.

“Export sales will continue to be one of PROTON’s main pillars heading into 2021 and beyond. With our domestic market performance having stabilised and undergoing steady growth, renewed emphasis has to be placed on making Proton a regional and global automotive brand.

As a national car company, we represent Malaysia on the global stage and when we grow our export volume, our own local vendor community stands to gain as well. We will have more announcements about overseas market activities in the months and years to come,” added Roslan Abdullah.

Success During Tough Times – Top Proton Dealer Share Their Story

Setia Gemilang Proton

Ever since the government announced the PENJANA plan in June where cars are being sold without Sales and Service Tax (SST), car sales have gone through the roof, and with models like the Proton X50 making their debut during this period, things were definitely looking good for our National carmaker.

But that doesn’t mean that dealers have been just sitting and shaking their legs while counting money. Since the demand has been exceptionally high, so is the pressure to deliver, says Andrew Quek, the Managing Director of Setia Gemilang Auto, the most successful Proton dealership in the country at the moment.

Setia Gemilang Proton 4S centre

“Business has been good this year, but it was definitely tough because of the Covid-19 Pandemic. The Penjana plan which was introduced by the government in June actually helped our sales tremendously, helping us to manage our business over the past five months.”

Speaking of managing, Andrew said that the biggest challenge of operating a dealership in 2020 has been managing the expectations of customers and keeping them happy.

Setia Gemilang Proton 4S Centre

“There are many types of customers, and every day is a different challenge. Over the years, at least for myself, I learned that for any business to survive – the most important thing to do is to listen to customers when they have an issue, and then finding ways to settle them.”

“Some of these issues cannot be solved immediately. So, the least we try to do is provide them with regular updates on the progress with their vehicle. This way, it shows them that we care about their issues,” said Andrew.

Setia Gemilang Proton 4S Centre

Speaking about the overwhelming response for the Proton X50, Andrew said that the car basically sells itself, as the market has been eagerly awaiting the sale of the car way before its launch date.

When asked about what makes Setia Gemilang the most successful dealer in the country, Andrew said that one of the factors is repeat customers.

Setia Gemilang Proton 4S Centre

“I find that we have the same buyers, buying new cars from us. They are repeat-customers. For instance, many customers who bought an X70, actually came back to buy another model during the SST exemption period. So, in our outlet, it is like a growing community of same purchasers.”

“Another factor is that Setia Gemilang is a 4S centre, offering a complete range of needs from sales to service. Personally, I think that our customers actually like the outlet.”

Setia Gemilang Proton 4S Centre

“With amenities like sufficient seating area, free refreshment, free Wi-Fi, as well as ample parking space, there is no surprise that our customers are happy. In addition, customers have also told me that they feel safe, since we have been strictly following Covid-19 related SOPs, providing each customer that enters the premise with free face shields, thorough sanitization, as well as face masks (if they don’t have one).”

When asked about day-to-day activities at the dealership at the moment, Andrew said that apart from the usual test drives, dealerships are providing free sanitisation for customers and frontliners’ cars.

Setia Gemilang Proton 4S Centre sanitisation

“We do this as part of our social responsibility, and more so, as Malaysians coming together to beat this pandemic. They give their time to public service to ensure compliance, safety and our well-being, hence we are showing appreciation every way we can.”

Aiming to sell more than 475 cars a month in 2021 (a record they set in July 2020), Andrew said that Setia Gemilang’s main objective in 2021 is to open another outlet in Klang Valley in order to be able to reach out to a larger customer base.

Setia Gemilang Proton 4S Centre

Having sold a total of 2,826 vehicles in 2019, Setia Gemilang was the no.1 Proton dealer in Malaysia in terms of sales figures. As for 2020, the outlet has already sold 2,848 vehicles as of October, and remains in the lead and well on track to be the top dealer for another year.

Setia Gemilang Auto Sdn Bhd is located at Lot 7959, Jalan Batu Tiga (Off Jln Subang) Subang, Shah Alam Selangor Darul, 40100 Shah Alam, Selangor.

Geely Okavango Joins the List of Cars with Unfortunate Names

Geely okavango

Thanks to their partnership with Proton, any news revolving around Geely is big news for us at the moment.

In fact, we wouldn’t even be surprised if a light or a fan malfunctions in Geely’s plant in China and it becomes breaking news in Malaysia the following day because, well, it’s Geely.

geely okavango

Anyways, the brand revealed the Haoyue SUV in the Philippines recently, but with a different name. Just like how the Geely Boyue became the Proton X70 and the Geely Binyue became the X50 in our market, the Geely Haoyue, is officially known as the Geely Okavango in the Philippines.

While the Haoyue name means ‘heroic’ in Chinese, Okavango here refers to the Okavango Delta in Botswana, Africa.  According to Geely Philippines, the Okavango delta was chosen because it is one of the seven natural wonders of Africa which also happens to be the 1000th site to be officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Cool.

As expected, every motoring publication in Malaysia swiftly reported the news the very next day because well, it’s Geely.

As popular as the news was among petrolheads, it was even more popular among the local Indian community, especially the ones who speak the Tamil language – because of the name of the SUV, simply means “let’s have sex (in a very vulgar manner)” in Tamil.

Yes, we are fully aware of the fact that the Okavango is highly unlikely to make its way to Malaysia, and even if it does, it would probably be known as the Proton X90 or something similar, but imagine if it did in the future with the same name as the Philippines market.

Imagine having to tell the name of your brand new Geely Okavango to a Tamil-speaking friend or an acquaintance who asks about your new ride.

“You bought a what bro?”

As creative and thoughtful as it was for the folks at Geely Philippines to name their version of the Haoyue after a natural wonder in Africa, it would’ve been better if they stopped by other parts of the world just to see what it means, you know, just to be safe.

Regardless, the Geely Okavango has definitely earned a spot in the “Cars with Unfortunate Names” wall of fame which we just spoke of a few months back, along the Mazda Laputa, Volkswagen Thing, and many more.

That being said, if at all there are plans to bring the Okavango to Malaysia, we would like to take this opportunity to humbly request Geely and Proton to call it something else.

In case you’re wondering, the Geely Okavango which will be available in the Philippines is a seven-seater SUV that sits between the Geely Coolray and the Azkarra in the country.

Powering the SUV is a mild-hybrid 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 7-speed DCT gearbox which produce 184 PS and 300 Nm of torque.

Proton X50 Receives More than 27,400 Bookings since Launch

proton x50

The Proton X50 has received a phenomenal response from Malaysian car buyers since it was revealed last month.

As of the end of October, 27,400 bookings had been placed for the SUV and deliveries have begun with 447 units already in customer hands.

The X50 aside, Proton also announced that the company’s sales momentum continued on an upward trajectory for a fifth consecutive month in October.

With 11,392 units sold (domestic and export), sales grew by 20% over the same month in 2019 but contracted by 4.6% compared to September. Total sales for the year now stand at 84,999 units, 6.2% ahead of last year and equivalent to an estimated 21.3% market share.

While sales in October were slightly down compared to the previous month, three Proton models continue to lead in their respective market segments.

The Proton Persona, which has faced a raft of new competitors in 2020, continues to lead the B-segment sedan market with 2,360 units sold while the Proton X70 saw 2,216 units sold for the month, maintaining its lead in the SUV segment.

The Proton Exora also retains its customary position as the best-selling C-segment MPV, proving there is still a viable market for large seven-seat people carriers despite the continued growth in SUV sales.

“The recovery of Malaysia’s automotive market is continuing to gather pace judging by the number of new model launches and total sales in October. We estimate the Total-Industry-Volume (TIV) to be the second highest in 2020 with over 57,000 units sold, proof that the car industry is rebounding strongly,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer, Proton Edar.
