Proton X50 Quartz Black is Back in Malaysia

Proton is capitalising on growing demand for darker, more premium-looking vehicles with the introduction of a new Quartz Black exterior colour for the Proton X50, now available across all variants starting this month.

The move follows the strong reception to the limited-run X50 Black Edition, which was capped at 200 units and based on the Flagship variant. Encouraged by that response, Proton is now making black a permanent fixture in the X50’s colour palette, signalling a shift in buyer preferences within Malaysia’s highly competitive B-segment SUV market.

Rather than being a simple cosmetic update, the introduction of Quartz Black reflects a broader trend in automotive design, where darker, more restrained finishes are increasingly associated with sophistication and perceived premium value.

For the X50, a model already defined by its sporty proportions and bold styling, the new colour enhances its visual presence, sharpening body lines while amplifying contrast elements such as chrome trim and LED lighting signatures.

The timing is also strategic. Despite intensifying competition in the segment, the X50 continues to maintain strong sales momentum. The model recorded 3,265 units in March alone, bringing its total for the first quarter of 2026 to 7,571 units — a 48% increase compared to the same period last year. This performance reinforces its position as one of Malaysia’s top-selling SUVs, even as newer rivals enter the market.

Proton attributes this sustained demand not only to the product itself, but also to its ongoing efforts to improve the overall ownership experience. Alongside the new colour option, the company continues to emphasise its aftersales initiatives, including the Fast Service programme for minor maintenance with a targeted 90-minute turnaround, as well as a 1-Day Service Delivery promise for more extensive servicing.

For longer repair cases, Proton also offers additional customer support, including a relief vehicle and a one-time complimentary service covering parts and labour if repairs extend beyond three working days. These measures are aimed at reducing downtime and improving convenience, areas that are becoming increasingly important to buyers.

The introduction of Quartz Black also aligns with shifting consumer expectations, particularly among younger urban buyers who increasingly view vehicle choice as an extension of personal identity. In this context, black remains a consistent favourite, valued not only for its visual appeal but also for its strong resale prospects and broad market acceptance.

With the addition of Quartz Black, the Proton X50 gains a more understated yet assertive option in its line-up — one that reinforces its positioning as a stylish, accessible, and well-rounded SUV for the Malaysian market.
