Liberty Rolls Out EV-Focused Insurance Policy in Malaysia

As electric vehicles gain traction on roads across Malaysia, the realities of ownership are shifting beyond the traditional concerns of driving and maintenance. Charging infrastructure, home charging equipment and public charging stations are now part of daily EV use, introducing new risks that conventional motor insurance policies were not originally designed to cover.

Recognising these changes, Liberty General Insurance Berhad has introduced EV 365 Care, an optional insurance add-on tailored for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The package expands protection beyond the vehicle itself, addressing incidents that may occur while charging at home, using public charging infrastructure or travelling with portable charging equipment.

The new offering reflects the broader shift in mobility, where vehicles are increasingly connected to home energy systems and shared public infrastructure. EV drivers today must consider factors such as battery charging access, charging hardware and energy supply reliability—elements that were largely irrelevant for conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.

One of the most common concerns among EV owners is running out of battery power before reaching a charging point. To address this, the Battery-powered Electric Vehicle (BEV) 365 Care plan includes 24-hour towing assistance in the event the vehicle runs out of charge. The coverage provides unlimited towing to the nearest operational charging station or to the insured driver’s home, helping minimise disruption when an EV is stranded without power.

The add-on also recognises that charging equipment has increasingly become part of household infrastructure. For EV owners who install home wall chargers, EV 365 Care offers coverage of up to RM12,000 to repair or replace a damaged unit.

In addition, personal liability protection of up to RM50,000 is provided if a home charger causes third-party death, bodily injury or property damage. A further compassionate cover of up to RM5,000 is available if the insured property is damaged due to incidents involving the charger.

Beyond private residences, EV drivers frequently rely on public charging stations, particularly when travelling longer distances. EV 365 Care includes compensation of up to RM5,000 if an insured vehicle is damaged while charging at a public station or if the driver or authorised user suffers bodily injury during the charging process.

For drivers who carry portable charging equipment, the policy also offers protection of up to RM2,000 for repair or replacement if a portable charger is damaged by accidents, fire, lightning or theft. This ensures that essential charging tools remain protected when used away from home.

The introduction of EV 365 Care reflects Liberty’s broader approach to adapting insurance products to emerging mobility trends. As electrified vehicles become more common, insurers are increasingly developing solutions that account for charging infrastructure and EV-specific ownership risks rather than focusing solely on road-related incidents.

To mark the launch, Liberty is also running the EV 365 Care Campaign until 30 April 2026. During this period, the first 88 customers who purchase selected Liberty motor insurance plans with the EV 365 Care add-on will be eligible to receive EV charging credits worth RM88, offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

With EV adoption steadily rising in Malaysia, solutions like EV 365 Care highlight how the surrounding ecosystem—from charging infrastructure to insurance services—is evolving to support the transition to electrified mobility.
