Porsche has just expanded the Taycan range with a new base model, bringing the total number of variants to four – the new Taycan, Taycan 4S, Taycan Turbo, and Taycan Turbo S.
The new base Taycan, which is a rear-wheel drive model, is available with two sizes of battery. With the standard Performance Battery, the new entry-level model delivers up to 408 PS. Meanwhile, those who opt for the base Taycan with Performance Battery Plus will be entitled to an output of up to 476 PS.
While the single-deck Performance Battery with a gross capacity of 79.2 kWh is fitted as standard, the two-deck 93.4 kWh Performance Battery Plus is available only as an option. Range, in accordance with WLTP, is up to 431 km and up to 484 km respectively.
As the youngest member of the model family, the Taycan includes, right from the start, the new features introduced in the other versions at the model year changeover. For instance, there is the Plug & Charge function which enables convenient charging and payments without the need for cards or an app.
The new base Taycan accelerates from a standing start to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, whichever battery is specified. Its top speed is also 230 km/h in both configurations, while its maximum charging capacity is up to 225 kW (Performance Battery) or up to 270 kW (Performance Battery Plus).
This means that both batteries can be charged from five to 80 per cent in 22.5 minutes and that power for a further 100 kilometres is achieved after only five minutes.
In addition to the permanently excited synchronous motor on the rear axle, the drive architecture also includes a two-speed transmission. Just as with its siblings in the model range, its highlights include intelligent charging management as well as exemplary aerodynamics.
Distinguishing features of the Taycan within its model family include aerodynamically optimised 19-inch Taycan Aero wheels and black anodised brake callipers.
The front apron, side sills and rear diffuser in black are the same as those on the Taycan 4S. LED headlights are fitted as standard.
Inside, the new base Taycan comes with a partial leather interior as well as front comfort seats with eight-way electrical adjustment. The car features two luggage compartments: 84 litres at the front, and up to 407 litres at the rear.
The Taycan is also the first Porsche model available with an entirely leather-free interior. Interiors made from innovative recycled materials underscore the sustainable concept of the electric sports car.
The adaptive air suspension is also equipped with a Smartlift function. This allows the Taycan to be programmed so that it raises its ride height automatically at certain recurring locations such as road humps or garage driveways.
The Smartlift function can also actively influence the vehicle’s height on motorway journeys and can adjust the vehicle’s ride height for the best possible compromise between efficiency and driving comfort.
The Taycan is equipped as standard with six-piston aluminium monobloc fixed-calliper brakes at the front and four-piston aluminium monobloc fixed-calliper brakes at the rear. The internally vented brake discs are 360 mm diameter at the front and 358 mm at the rear.
The brake callipers have a black anodised finish. A further option is the high-performance Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB). Its discs have a diameter of 410 mm and 365 mm front and rear.
Having delivered over 20,000 Taycans to customers worldwide in 2020, the model was already off to a flying start since its global debut. The electric sports car has already received around 50 international awards, above all in its principal markets of Germany, the US, the UK and China.
The new rear-wheel drive Taycan also holds the Guinness World Record for the longest drift with an electric car, having been driven sideways non-stop for exactly 42.171 km. Now that a cheaper entry-level model is in the picture, we can only expect the Taycan sales to grow further around the world.
As for Malaysia, the Porsche Taycan is available in three variants, with prices ranging between RM725,000 and RM1.195 million.
Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP) enters a new era of electromobility with the launch of the new Porsche Taycan, its first fully electric sports car.
The Taycan models will be available in Malaysia in three variants:
Taycan Turbo S – RM1.195 million
Taycan Turbo – RM999,000
Taycan 4S – RM725,000
On the exterior, LED Matrix Headlights including Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus) are equipped as standard for the Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo, while the Taycan 4S comes with LED Headlights including Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus).
Other standard features on the Taycan Turbo S include lightweight Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB), carbon fibre door sill guards, sport design side skirts, and rear diffusor in louvered design. These are available as options for the Taycan Turbo and Taycan 4S.
Inside, The freestanding 16.9-inch curved instrument cluster forms the highest point on the dashboard, while a central, 10.9-inch infotainment display and an optional passenger display are combined to form an integrated glass band in a black-panel look.
“Foot garages” – recesses in the battery in the rear footwell – ensure sitting comfort in the rear and allow the low sports car height.
An entire leather-free interior is fitted as standard for the Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo, and is an available option for the Taycan 4S. Interiors made from innovative recycled materials underscore the sustainable concept of the electric sports car.
According to Porsche, the original 911’s cleanly styled dashboard from 1963 was the inspiration for the Taycan’s cabin design.
In terms of performance, the flagship Taycan Turbo S can generate up to 761 PS overboost power in combination with Launch Control, and the Taycan Turbo up to 680 PS.
The Taycan Turbo S generates up to 1,050 Nm of torque and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds, while the Taycan Turbo reaches maximum torque of 850 Nm and completes this sprint in 3.2 seconds.
The Turbo S has a range of up to 412 kilometres, while the Turbo has a range of up to 450 kilometres. The top speed of both all-wheel-drive models is 260 km/h. The Porsche Electric Sport Sound comes as standard, a unique acoustic accompaniment to dynamic driving.
As for the Taycan 4S, it reaches the century sprint in 4.0 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h. With the standard Performance Battery, it delivers up to 530 PS via overboost power in conjunction with Launch Control. This is increased to a maximum of 571 PS with the optional Performance Battery Plus.
The Taycan 4S also has an electrical range of up to 407 kilometres with the standard Performance Battery and 463 kilometres with the Performance Battery Plus.
The Taycan is the first production vehicle with a system voltage of 800 volts instead of the usual 400 volts for electric cars. This is a particular advantage for Taycan drivers on the road: in just over 36 minutes, the battery can be fully recharged using the available 175 kW direct current (DC) chargers from the high-power charging network for a range of over 400 km across all models.
The overall capacity of the Performance Battery Plus is 93.4 kWh and can conduct higher currents, thus speeding up the charging process significantly. Taycan drivers can comfortably charge their cars with up to eleven kW of alternating current (AC) at home.
As part of the ownership experience that Porsche is known for, SDAP will be offering intelligent and holistic charging solutions for Taycan owners, with equipment that includes a 22 kW Porsche Mobile Charger Plus and the Porsche Home Energy Manager.
Malaysia’s first Direct Current (DC) high performance chargers have also been installed across SDAP dealer network. With first deliveries of the Taycan estimated to be in the first quarter of 2021, all Taycan owners can have peace of mind with these 175 kW DC chargers delivering a full charge in 36 minutes
Taycan customers will enjoy the same complimentary and comprehensive four-year maintenance and warranty programme offered for all Porsche cars by SDAP, with the battery covered under an eight-year warranty. Customers can opt to extend both the vehicle and battery warranties for up to fifteen years.
Thanks to a total of 27 new developments, the Porsche Taycan has been named the most important innovation driver in the global automotive market.
13 of these, or almost half, are world firsts. These are the conclusions of the new AutomotiveINNOVATIONS Report published by the Center of Automotive Management (CAM).
Innovations in the electric Porsche recognised by the scientists at CAM include its 800-volt architecture, two-speed transmission on the rear axle, high recuperative power of up to 265 kW and best cd value in the segment (from 0.22).
The Center of Automotive Management (CAM) is an independent scientific institute for strategic consulting and empirical automotive and mobility research at the University of Applied Sciences (FHDW) in Bergisch Gladbach.
Under Centre Director Professor Stefan Bratzel, they have been analysing the innovations of global automotive manufacturers since 2005.
In conjunction with the auditing and consulting company PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), they recognise the most outstanding innovations in their annual awards. Approximately 250 production vehicles were evaluated for 2019/20.
