Malaysian carmakers have a tendency to drag on the arrival of new cars, transitioning from opening the order books to previews and roadshows before the official launch at a glacial pace over months.
That was the story with the Honda Prelude but the wait has finally come to an end with Honda Malaysia revealing its RM 278,000 price at the 11th Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS 2026) today.
Almost all information and specifications regarding the sports coupe has been revealed but to recap, the BF1 Prelude will be sold in a single trim.
Much of the anticipation centred around the powertrain and chassis combination, essentially combining the hybrid setup with handling from the iconic Honda Civic Type-R. The Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) hybrid system is the same as that found in the Civic Hybrid e:HEV and CR-V Hybrid e:HEV.
That means you get a 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle naturally-aspirated inline-four mated to an electric motor. Numbers are also identical to the Civic Hybrid, making 141 PS and 182 Nm of torque.
The engine functions primarily as a generator for the 1.05 kWh battery that feeds the electric motor, which delivers 184 PS and 315 Nm of torque.
However, the engine is capable of driving the front wheels via a clutch if required. In doing so, the system’s total output comes up to 203 PS. All in, the coupe can dispatch the century sprint in 8.2 seconds and tops out at 188 kph.
Linking the powertrain to the front wheels is a conventional electric CVT with a few tricks up its sleeves. Honda’s S+ Shift tech is meant to simulate gear shifts with eight-virtual ratios and works with Active Sound Control to accentuate the shifting experience.
While the powertrain is shared with the Civic Hybrid, handling is courtesy of the wildest Civic, the Type-R. This includes the trick dual-axis strut front suspension and adaptive dampers.
Filling the corners are black 19-inch alloys wrapped with 235/40R19 tyres while 13.8-inch Brembos sit behind the front items. Lastly, torque steer is reduced with driveshafts that are uniformly rigid.
Honda has always maintained that the Prelude was never about outright power and performance, opting to focus on refining all aspects such as handling and power delivery for a balanced drive.
In this respect, Honda Agile Handling Assist is equipped to improve steering response and corner stability. The system works to sharpen line-tracing from corner entry to exit for stability.
Completing the list of kit are automatic LED headlights, LED DRLs, active cornering lights, remote engine start, walk away auto lock and smart entry.
The cabin is heavily inspired by the Civic, save for the air-conditioning vents and a flat-bottomed, triple-spoke steering wheel with a centre marker.
Although the front seats are manually adjusted, they offer improved support and bolstering for the lucky two occupants, finished in a two-tone blue and white combo.
Sitting front and centre is a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, outputting through an eight-speaker Bose sound system. This setup is complemented by a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster.
There is no gear lever, instead the transmission is controlled by a push-button selector. Alongside the buttons are the switches for the parking brake and drive mode selector, while the S+ Shift tech gets a large button in the same vicinity as well.
Safety comprises the usual Honda Sensing suite with the passive side made up of seven airbags, front + rear parking sensors and a reverse camera.
There will be three colours available, Winter Frost Pearl, Rallye Red and Crystal Black Pearl.
