BYD Flash Charging Could Make EV Charging in Malaysia Almost as Fast as Refuelling

BYD Flash Charging

BYD Malaysia and Gentari explore high-power charging deployment, while the DENZA Z9GT gets a new Fjord Green exterior colour.

BYD Malaysia is looking to bring its ultra-fast BYD Flash Charging technology to the country, following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Gentari, a clean energy solutions company wholly owned by Petronas.

The collaboration will explore opportunities to expand Malaysia’s high-power EV charging infrastructure, with plans to eventually introduce the technology at selected showrooms, Petronas stations, intercity corridors and highway rest and service areas.

BYD Flash Charging promises charging speeds of up to “Ready in 5, Full in 9 Minutes”, bringing the EV charging experience closer to the convenience of conventional petrol refuelling.

BYD Fast Charging

The technology is designed for vehicles equipped with BYD’s Second Generation Blade Battery. One of the first models in Malaysia to support it is the recently launched DENZA Z9GT, which features a 122.49 kWh battery and a 1,000-volt high-voltage architecture.

According to BYD, the DENZA Z9GT can charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes, while a 10% to 97% charge takes nine minutes under compatible Flash Charging conditions.

Existing BYD models will also be compatible with the new charging infrastructure, although their charging speeds will depend on each vehicle’s capabilities.

Jacob Ma, Managing Director of BYD Malaysia, said the company is working towards making Flash Charging available to Malaysian customers, with the initiative aimed at improving convenience and supporting the country’s growing EV ecosystem.

The initial deployment will focus on selected DENZA luxury showrooms, giving owners of compatible vehicles early access to the technology.

BYD Malaysia and Gentari will subsequently explore suitable locations and supporting infrastructure, including Petronas stations and major intercity routes connecting key population centres. Selected highway rest and service areas are also being considered as the network expands.

Beyond infrastructure development, the partnership will also explore local training and technician upskilling to support Malaysia’s EV industry.

DENZA Z9GT gets a new Fjord Green colour

Alongside the charging infrastructure announcement, DENZA Malaysia has introduced Fjord Green as a new exterior colour option for the Z9GT, joining the existing Rime Gold and Obsidian Black choices.

The new colour is now available for viewing at all DENZA showrooms nationwide.

Since its Malaysian launch, more than 100 units of the Z9GT have been delivered to customers, with additional batches arriving to meet demand.

Priced at RM358,800, the DENZA Z9GT is built on BYD’s e3 Platform and delivers a combined output of 850 kW (1,156 PS). It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds and comes equipped with advanced manoeuvring functions such as Compass Turn and Crab Walk.

The introduction of BYD Flash Charging infrastructure in Malaysia will also enable the Z9GT to take advantage of its ultra-fast charging capability.

Interior configurations vary depending on the exterior colour. Fjord Green can be paired with Perg Beige, Red Velvet or an all-black interior featuring suede seats with yellow stitching.

The DENZA Z9GT is currently available at DENZA Balakong, Glenmarie, KLCC, KL North, Old Klang Road, Melaka, Penang and Skudai.
