2026 Proton X70 MC3 Debuts with New i-GT Engine and Streamlined Line-Up, From RM106,800

Proton has officially pulled the covers off the 2026 Proton X70 MC3, marking the most meaningful update yet for its popular C-segment SUV. While the exterior design remains largely familiar, this mid-cycle refresh focuses squarely on what matters most beneath the skin — a brand-new 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder i-GT engine that replaces the outgoing three-cylinder unit, alongside improvements in efficiency and a simplified model range.

While the previous X70 was offered in four variants, the MC3 update reduces the range to just two variants with prices as mentioned below:

  • X70 1.5 TD Executive – RM106,800
  • X70 1.5 TD Premium – RM119,800

The headline upgrade for the X70 MC3 is the introduction of Proton’s Intelligent Green Technology (i-GT) 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This new unit produces 181 PS at 5,500 rpm and 290 Nm of torque from 2,000 to 3,500 rpm, representing a clear step up from the previous 1.5-litre three-cylinder TGDi engine, which delivered 177 PS and 255 Nm.

The gains on paper translate into a notable increase in torque, addressing one of the key criticisms of the outgoing engine while also bringing smoother power delivery expected from a four-cylinder layout.

Importantly, while the engine is new, Proton has retained the existing 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, a proven gearbox that continues to drive the front wheels and ensures continuity in driving characteristics.

Beyond performance, Proton has also placed emphasis on lowering ownership costs. The new i-GT engine utilises a timing chain, a change that is expected to reduce long-term maintenance costs.

Despite the increase in power and torque, efficiency has not been sacrificed. The 2026 Proton X70 MC3 is rated at 6.9 L/100 km, an improvement over the outgoing three-cylinder model, which was rated at approximately 7.3 L/100 km.

This improvement underscores Proton’s intent to balance stronger performance with better fuel economy, aligning with the brand’s broader efficiency-focused powertrain strategy.

Visually, the 2026 X70 MC3 remains largely unchanged, carrying over the facelifted design introduced previously. Proton has limited exterior revisions to just one detail — the removal of the “TGD-i” badge on the front doors, signalling the end of the three-cylinder era for the model.

Inside the cabin, the update is equally subtle. The only noticeable change is the introduction of red stitching on the seats, adding a mild sporty accent to an otherwise familiar interior layout. Beyond these touches, the X70 MC3 retains the same overall design, features and proportions as the outgoing model.

Proton also revealed that a lot of emphasis has been given to improve the level of noise, vibration, and harshness in the X70. Thanks to a tweaked steering system and also suspension system, the new X70’s cabin is expected to feel much quieter and more refined.

Rather than a visual overhaul, the 2026 Proton X70 MC3 represents a targeted evolution of the model. By prioritising a more refined four-cylinder engine, improved fuel efficiency, lower maintenance expectations and a cleaner variant strategy, Proton has addressed key areas of feedback while preserving what existing owners and buyers already appreciate about the X70.

With its updated powertrain and simplified offering, the X70 MC3 is positioned to remain competitive in Malaysia’s crowded C-SUV segment, continuing its role as one of Proton’s most important models going into 2026.

Last but not least, the 2026 Proton X70 also comes with a 5-year/ unlimited mileage warranty, an upgraded 5-year in-car data package of 2GB per month, a trade-in overtrade support of up to RM2,000 (first 1,500 buyers only), and an upgraded Proton Insurance program which covers special perils and whatnot.

The first 1,500 customers who book the new X70 will also get a cash rebate of RM7,000 and free accessories such as a boot tray, sun visor, and door visors.
