MINI recently celebrated the world premiere of the MINI Strip, a custom-made, one-off model created in collaboration with British fashion house Paul Smith.
According to MINI, the car showcases inspirational ideas for a more sustainable method of automotive design.
Based on the MINI Electric
As the name suggests, the process began by completely stripping down the MINI Electric and reducing it to its structural essence.
The body was left in its unfinished state with no coloured paint applied, but instead just a thin film of transparent paint to protect against corrosion.
Grinding marks from the factory have been consciously left intact on the galvanised steel panels to clearly identify the car as a functional object. This effect was dubbed “the perfect imperfection” by Paul Smith it seems.
Parts of the MINI black band have been 3D-printed from recycled plastic and their basic material qualities have been left exposed – like the metal panels.
The functional and distinctive front and rear apron inserts were also manufactured via a 3D printing process, which produced their striking texture.
The blanked-off radiator grille of the MINI Strip and its wheel covers help to reduce drag, thereby increasing its theoretical range.
The grille trim and aerodynamic covers on the wheels are made from recycled Perspex, saving both weight and resources.
Recycled Perspex was also used for the large panoramic roof that allows curious eyes to view the largely bare structure of the bodyshell inside.
Inside, all trim parts have been purposefully omitted (with the exception of the dashboard, topper pad and parcel shelf), turning the bodyshell into the dominant visual feature of the cabin.
It has been coloured blue at the explicit request of Paul Smith, producing a particularly eye-catching effect.
The exposed, basic material and intense blue tone give the interior an aesthetic appeal all of its own; it is bare yet feels “dressed” at the same time.
Instead of the usual multi-part design, the dashboard consists of one large, semi-transparent section with a smoked-glass finish.
Phone takes centre stage inside
There is no classic centre instrument, leaving the driver’s smartphone to take centre stage instead. It is placed where the centre display would normally be, connects automatically to the car and becomes the media control centre.
The only physical controls in the interior are located lower in the centre stack, where the toggle switches for the power windows and the start/stop function can be found.
The interior is free of both leather and chrome, with the seats upholstered in a knitted fabric. The completely mono-material design for the seat coverings means they are fully recyclable – including the piping – allowing material circularity to be maintained.
Recycled rubber floor mats
The floor mats are made from recycled rubber with their terrazzo-like pattern a by-product of the recycling and manufacturing process, positively showcasing the multi-coloured constituent elements enjoying a second life as part of this material.
The dashboard topper pad, door shoulders and parcel shelf are made from recycled cork which doesn’t contain synthetic binding agents – ensuring it’s fully recyclable.
A small, fabric Paul Smith label in the one o’clock position is one of the pointers to the collaboration that can be found in the interior.
Mesh door panels
The door panels are made from the same mesh material that covers the airbag, enabling the door structure to be clearly seen behind the mesh panels, which are held within a frame.
The transparency of the knitted mesh changes according to the angle of view, adding a further dimension to the interior’s appearance.
The pull handles in the door shoulders are made from wound climbing rope and, together with the matching seat belts, liven up the interior with their bright orange finish.
Like the pull handles, the door openers in milled aluminium are housed in the cork door shoulders and provide a high-class finishing touch for the door area.
Offered with MINI 4 Years Unlimited Mileage Warranty with Free Scheduled Service, the recommended retail prices on the road, without insurance and SST are:
The New MINI John Cooper Works 3 Door – RM 311,259
The New MINI John Cooper Works Countryman – RM 383,463
On the exterior, the front gives way to a brand-new radiator grille – now larger and forming a single unbroken hexagon which extends low to the road.
Within the hexagon, the safety bar assimilates seamlessly with the body colour, bringing attention to the red crossbar that runs across the front.
Further elevating the exciting new look are the Adaptive LED headlights that are now enclosed in a new black inner housing – a design that is seen also in the taillights.
The new MINI Cooper JCW also features enlarged cooling air openings to ensure optimum temperature control of the drive and brake systems in extreme sporty driving conditions.
Model-specific side scuttles now decorate the front side panels and the rear apron – the latter which also features a distinctive diffuser to optimise airflow in the rear area of the underbody.
Meanwhile, the new MINI Countryman JCW has also received a refined exterior and modern design accents, including a new radiator grille design and the signature Union Jack light design.
Piano Black Exterior trims adorn both the new Cooper and Countryman John Cooper Works, with door handles, the MINI logo, and model badges receiving a high-gloss black treatment.
New Adaptive LED headlamps with variable light distribution and matrix function for the high beam lights also come standard for both new models.
Powering the new MINI JCW Cooper is a 2.0-litre 4-Cylinder MINI TwinPower Turbo Engine, and an 8-Speed Steptronic Sport Transmission, producing up to 231 hp and 320 Nm of torque.
Capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds, the new model has a top speed of 246 km/h. Fuel consumption is measured at 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres of travel.
Meanwhile, the New MINI John Cooper Works Countryman boasts the most powerful engine ever used in a MINI, a 2.0-litre 4-Cylinder MINI TwinPower Turbo Engine, along with an independent cooling system.
Countryman with 306 hp
This combination allows an impressive output of 306 hp and 450 Nm of torque. Paired with the intelligently controlled ALL4 all-wheel drive and 8-speed Steptronic Sport Transmission, the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman goes from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds.
This new model has a top speed of 250 km/h. Fuel consumption is measured at 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres of travel.
Inside, the New MINI John Cooper Works 3 Door features a new steering wheel, new MINI Yours Aluminium Interior Surface, as well as new décor designs and air vents.
Additionally, the car has also been outfitted with a redesigned centre instrument with an 8.8-inch touch display in black panel design, which houses a new operating system with a modernised graphic display.
For the first time, the Live Widget feature is also available via swiping motion on the touch display. Also utilising black panel technology is the new 5.0-inch Digital Instrument Cluster display, that shows relevant driving information.
Another welcome addition are the different interior Colour Worlds – “Lounge” and “Sports” – a feature tied to the display surfaces to set the mood of the drive.
In “Lounge” mode, the display surfaces appear in relaxing shades of blue and turquoise, whereas switching to “Sports” mode causes the screen backgrounds to glow in red and anthracite.
On request, the Colour Worlds of the displays can be synchronised with the MINI Driving Modes that come standard in MINI John Cooper Works models.
This allows for colour changes to occur in tandem with the accelerator pedal, steering characteristics and, optionally, the damper and gearshift characteristics. The result of this is an overall driving experience that is heightened by vivid visual sensations.
For the JCW Countryman, the interior has also been modernised with new accents. The 5.0-inch Digital Instrument Cluster display behind the steering wheel is now standard, while the 8.8-inch colour display with touchscreen function located on the characteristic central instrument panel has been updated with a bezel and touch-sensitive control panels in high-gloss Piano Black.
For both the New MINI John Cooper Works 3 Door and the New MINI John Cooper Works Countryman, other premium equipment available include Dinamica Leather John Cooper Works Sport Seats, Head-Up Display, Comfort Access system, MINI Driving Modes, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and Panoramic Sunroof.
Exclusive for the JCW Countryman
Exclusively for the New MINI John Cooper Works Countryman is the MINI Yours Illuminated Interior Surface in Piano Black.
The New MINI John Cooper Works 3 Door and the New MINI John Cooper Works Countryman now arrive with the Driving Assistant as standard, as well as Parking Assistant – a first for the New MINI Cooper Works 3 Door – coupled with the Lane Departure Warning.
The operating system of the new MINI models is now more advanced than ever before, thanks to an updated graphics display and new connectivity features.
The screen display has been given a new modern look, while options for selecting and controlling vehicle functions, the audio system, hands-free telephone system, navigation, and applications have also been expanded.
For greater connectivity, the New MINI App can be downloaded from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
The New MINI John Cooper Works 3 Door and the New MINI John Cooper Works Countryman come in exterior colour offerings of the exclusive Rebel Green, Midnight Black and White Silver. All colour offerings are accompanied by roof colour in a striking Red.
Following the announcement of a new generation of the brand’s purely electric small cars, another decision has now been made by MINI – The MINI Convertible will live on.
According to the company, the development of a successor to the MINI Convertible is a done deal. It is said that the new model is scheduled to be unveiled in 2025.
Large fan base
“The MINI Convertible has a large and particularly loyal fan base. This is also shown by the great demand for the latest, freshly updated model,” says Bernd Körber, Head of the MINI brand.
The clear and reduced design expresses the vehicle’s extravagant charisma more intensively than ever – especially with the body paint in the new Zesty Yellow variant available exclusively for the MINI Convertible.
In addition, the unmistakable design features of the open-top MINI are showcased particularly effectively. The hexagonal radiator grille is larger than ever, the standard LED headlights have been redesigned as have the Side Scuttles, the black wheel arch surrounds have been given new contours, and the rear lights in the striking Union Jack design are now standard equipment
With its fresh look, new standard and optional equipment and innovative operating system, the MINI Convertible continues a success story that began some three decades ago.
Big success in short period
After the prototype at the British Motor Show in Birmingham in 1992 had already caused enthusiastic reactions from the public, a convertible version was added to the classic Mini for the first time.
And even after the relaunch of the brand, fans did not have to do without open-top driving fun in typical MINI style.
Best-selling convertible in the world?
Since 2004, the combination of go-kart feeling and open-air fun has thrilled discerning target groups all over the world. At times, MINI’s open-top four-seater was the best-selling convertible in the world.
The current MINI Convertible is not only the original in its vehicle class, but also a true one-off as the only open-top model in the premium small car segment.
Three equally powerful and efficient engines with MINI TwinPower Turbo technology ensure driving pleasure made to measure. The MINI John Cooper Works Convertible, with its 170 kW/231 hp engine, makes the wind blow even more powerfully.
The MINI Convertible enjoys particularly great popularity in the German car market, followed by the USA and Great Britain. Especially in these countries, but also in many other regions around the globe including Malaysia, the news of the planned continuation of the model history is likely to cause a sensation.
“Last year, almost one in five MINI customers in Germany opted for open-top driving fun,” said Bernd Körber. “This demonstrates the great enthusiasm of the MINI community for a vehicle concept like this in the future.”

Sime Darby Motors clocked another milestone with the official launch of its automotive facility, Sime Darby Motors City in Ara Damansara earlier this week.
Touted as the largest automotive complex in Southeast Asia, Sime Darby Motors City spans across 8.6 acres with an overall built-up area of 1.3 million square feet over eight levels.
Six brands under one roof
The complex houses six flagship centres featuring ten flagship brands represented by Sime Darby Motors in Malaysia, namely BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Jaguar, Land Rover, MINI, Motorrad, Porsche and Volvo. It also has an indoor facility capable of housing close to 100 vehicles under Sime Darby Motors’ pre-owned car business Sime Darby Auto Selection.
Integrated with the latest technologies to enrich the overall customer experience at every touch point, the facility boasts almost 200 service bays, approximately 700 customer parking and electric vehicle (EV) charging bays and the capacity to display more than 180 vehicles.
Supporting the facility are approximately 60 Auto Bavaria technicians for BMW, MINI and Motorrad and over 110 certified technicians. This includes technicians who hold the highest level of certification by the principal brands, including the Zertifizierter Porsche Techniker Gold Certification which is streamlined for Porsche technicians worldwide. Brands like Ford, Hyundai, Jaguar and Land Rover also have certifications with the highest being trained as Master Technicians.
Fully digital infrastructure
At the heart of the facility’s digital infrastructure is its Vehicle Tracking Management system which utilises a camera-based parking guide and customisable signages to ensure a higher level of guidance, security and convenience for the customer.
It also allows for quicker collection of vehicles upon completion of service. Internally, the facility’s digitalised infrastructure communicates the status of each vehicle in real-time, ensuring greater efficiencies are achieved.
IoT-powered Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras have also been installed, as part of a contactless self-check-in system, which enables customers’ appointment data to be accessed, upon their arrival.
Concurrently, a service advisor will be alerted and automatically assigned to the customer, allowing for a seamless experience. The deployment of these technologies will be rolled out progressively throughout Sime Darby Motors City.
Once in the showroom, customers can opt for a contactless self-check-in which utilises a QR code system. This will allow customers to be placed immediately in the queue without having to wait to be attended to, allowing for a fuss-free service experience. The introduction of this check-in system will be introduced across all brands at Sime Darby Motors City.
To support these enhancements to the after-sales experience, Sime Darby Motors has also digitalised the business for its sales representatives. This includes the introduction of a mobile application, which has enabled sales representatives to be connected anytime and anywhere with real-time data to better serve customers. With the mobile application, they can now populate and print application forms wirelessly, minimising steps in the administrative process and reducing customers’ waiting time.
Sime Darby Motors City also welcomes partners from our mobility collaborations; SOCAR, Malaysia’s leading car-sharing network and myTukar, Malaysia’s fastest growing online used car trading platform. The complex will have designated parking bays for SOCAR vehicles – ideal for customers dropping off their vehicles for service, and will be a showcase centre for myTukar trade-in vehicles, in collaboration with Sime Darby Auto Selection.
The facility is equipped with specialised EV-certified technicians and designated areas for EV charging, storage and repairs as well, which are currently available at Auto Bavaria, Auto Hyundai, Auto Performance and Swedish Auto.
And then we have Sime Darby Auto Performance which houses a high speed EV charging station that is capable of delivering a maximum of 175 kW, able to provide a near-full charge within 36 minutes, which is at least eight times faster than the fastest Alternating Current (AC) charger available at 22 kW.
The complex is a Green Building Index (GBI) certified facility built with sustainability in mind and incorporates technologies to cultivate a paperless organisational culture.
Grand Launch Weekend
To commemorate the launch, Sime Darby Motors City will be organising a “Grand Launch Weekend” with attractive deals across the six flagship stores between 16 and 18 April 2021. Interested customers are advised to make an appointment, in adherence with the government’s COVID-19 standard operating procedures on crowd control and physical distancing.
