GWM Malaysia has kicked off 2026 on a stable footing, delivering 1,294 vehicles in the first quarter despite a more cautious automotive market environment.
The Chinese automaker maintained its position among Malaysia’s top 15 brands, with performance improving progressively throughout the quarter. March, in particular, signalled a rebound in buyer sentiment, underpinned by sustained interest in the brand’s expanding electrified portfolio.
A key driver behind GWM’s resilience has been its diversified line-up spanning hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and fully electric (BEV) models—segments that continue to gain traction among Malaysian buyers.

Leading the charge is the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV, which has quickly established itself as a standout model in the premium MPV space. The model emerged as the top-selling Chinese luxury MPV in Malaysia for Q1 2026, reflecting growing acceptance of plug-in hybrid technology that blends electric driving with long-distance usability.
Crucially, the G9 also introduces GWM’s Hi4 intelligent hybrid system to the local market, signalling the brand’s longer-term push towards more advanced electrified powertrains.
Meanwhile, the HAVAL H6 HEV continues to anchor the brand’s volume, building on its strong showing in 2025 where it ranked among Malaysia’s top hybrid SUVs. Its appeal remains rooted in fuel efficiency, practicality, and lower running costs—key considerations as consumers become more cost-conscious.
GWM’s SUV strategy is also gaining momentum, led by lifestyle-focused models like the TANK 300. Positioned as a rugged, adventure-ready offering, the model has been instrumental in building brand awareness among enthusiasts and outdoor-oriented buyers.
The upcoming arrival of the TANK 300 HEV is expected to further strengthen this momentum, bringing electrification into the off-road segment.

At the higher end, the TANK 500 continues to expand its presence, offering a more refined and comfort-oriented alternative within the large SUV category.
On the fully electric front, the ORA Good Cat remains a key entry point into EV ownership. Its compact footprint and accessible positioning have made it particularly popular among urban users, reflecting a gradual but steady shift towards electric mobility in Malaysian cities.
According to GWM Malaysia Managing Director Cui Anqi, the company remains focused on delivering practical, value-driven mobility solutions despite ongoing market headwinds.
Looking ahead, the brand is cautiously optimistic, with growth expected to be supported by new product introductions and increased visibility at major industry events such as the KL International Mobility Show 2026 and Penang Autoshow 2026.
GWM Malaysia is also accelerating its retail expansion, with 39 outlets currently in operation and a target of 60 nationwide by the end of 2026. Alongside this, the company is placing strong emphasis on aftersales improvements, parts availability, and customer engagement to enhance long-term ownership confidence.

Chief Operating Officer Roslan Abdullah added that the next phase of growth will focus on execution—ensuring dealer readiness, strengthening service capabilities, and supporting upcoming launches such as the TANK 300 HEV.
Beyond the near term, GWM Malaysia is doubling down on a multi-powertrain strategy encompassing internal combustion, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric vehicles across its HAVAL, TANK, ORA, and WEY brands.
This diversified approach allows the company to compete across multiple segments—from mass-market SUVs to premium electrified offerings—while adapting to shifting consumer preferences in an increasingly value-driven market.
