GWM Malaysia has reached a significant milestone with the roll-out of the first locally assembled GWM WEY G9 at the EP Manufacturing Bhd (EPMB) facility in Melaka. The landmark event underscores the brand’s long-term commitment to Malaysia as a key manufacturing and regional growth base.
The ceremony was officiated by Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf Yusoh, Chief Minister of Melaka, and attended by senior representatives from EPMB and GWM Malaysia, marking a major step forward in the country’s New Energy Vehicle (NEV) journey.

The WEY G9 becomes the first premium Chinese New Energy MPV to be locally assembled in Malaysia, reinforcing GWM’s localisation strategy and its ambition to position Malaysia as a strategic production and export hub for the ASEAN region. The model is slated for its official Malaysian launch in early 2026.
The commencement of CKD production at EPMB reflects GWM’s confidence in Malaysia’s automotive manufacturing capabilities, particularly in supporting advanced electrified vehicles. Beyond assembly, the collaboration is expected to drive technology transfer, skills development, and local vendor participation, while laying the groundwork for future regional exports.
This partnership aligns with Malaysia’s broader aspirations to move up the automotive value chain, particularly within the rapidly expanding electrification and hybrid vehicle segments.
Commenting on the milestone, En. Roslan Abdullah, Chief Operating Officer of GWM Malaysia, said the roll-out represents more than just a production achievement.

“The WEY G9 rolling out from Melaka symbolises the convergence of GWM’s global engineering expertise with Malaysian craftsmanship. It demonstrates our long-term commitment to building a strong local ecosystem, from high-value job creation to supplier development, while delivering premium New Energy vehicles assembled with pride in Malaysia. This marks a crucial foundation for GWM Malaysia’s next phase of growth.”
Managing Director of GWM Malaysia, Mr. Cui Anqi, highlighted the broader regional significance of the milestone.
“Witnessing the first WEY G9 assembled in Malaysia is a proud moment for GWM. It reflects our confidence in Malaysia as a strategic manufacturing base and supports our ambition to expand our New Energy footprint across ASEAN. Our collaboration with EPMB goes beyond local assembly; it represents the start of a long-term roadmap that includes future export opportunities and deeper regional integration.”
Developed through GWM’s global research and development network, the WEY G9 is built on a dedicated luxury New Energy platform designed to deliver refinement, efficiency, and advanced electrified performance. Local assembly in Melaka ensures that Malaysian customers benefit from global engineering standards complemented by stringent local quality control.

Positioned in the premium MPV segment, the WEY G9 introduces GWM’s Hybrid Intelligent 4WD (Hi4) system, combining a turbocharged petrol engine with a dual-motor plug-in hybrid setup for strong performance, all-wheel-drive capability, and improved efficiency.
With a large battery enabling extended electric-only driving and a combined driving range suited for long-distance travel, the WEY G9 is engineered for both family and executive use.
Inside, the MPV focuses on a first-class passenger experience, featuring a spacious three-row layout, premium materials, advanced infotainment, intelligent safety systems, and comfort-oriented second-row seating designed to rival established Japanese and European luxury MPVs.

GWM Malaysia has confirmed that the WEY G9 is now open for booking at authorised GWM dealerships nationwide, with an expected price below RM300,000, positioning it as a highly competitive alternative in the premium MPV segment.
Following the successful roll-out of the first locally assembled unit, GWM Malaysia is progressing towards the WEY G9’s official market launch in early 2026. The CKD programme with EPMB will continue to expand, with a focus on deeper localisation, workforce development, and enhanced technical capabilities at the Melaka plant.
These initiatives will play a central role in strengthening Malaysia’s position within GWM’s wider ASEAN strategy and supporting the country’s evolving role in the regional New Energy Vehicle ecosystem. Further updates on CKD expansion and future phases of this regional roadmap will be announced in due course.
