Mercedes-Benz Malaysia recently brought its global “140 Years. 140 Places.” anniversary tour to local shores, marking a major milestone in the brand’s history while celebrating Malaysia’s unique role in the company’s global legacy.
The worldwide initiative commemorates 140 years since Carl Benz patented the world’s first automobile in 1886, a breakthrough that laid the foundation for modern mobility.
To mark the occasion, Mercedes-Benz embarked on an ambitious transcontinental journey beginning in Stuttgart, Germany, with three new Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedans travelling across six continents and 140 destinations worldwide.
Malaysia is one of the latest stops on this global tour, with Kuala Lumpur hosting a special showcase that highlights the brand’s heritage, technological innovations, and longstanding connection with the country.

Speaking at the event, Martin Schulz, CEO and President of Mercedes-Benz Cars Malaysia and Head of Region for Mercedes-Benz Cars Southeast Asia, said the anniversary represents more than just a celebration of the company’s achievements.
He noted that the milestone reflects 140 years of passion, precision, and innovation, while also recognising the strong relationship Mercedes-Benz has built with Malaysian customers over the decades.
New Mercedes-Benz S-Class Takes Centre Stage
One of the biggest attractions of the Malaysian leg of the celebration is the debut of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which was showcased at the House of Mercedes-Benz at KLCC Square.
The latest flagship luxury sedan receives extensive updates, with more than half of its components either newly developed or significantly re-engineered. Mercedes-Benz says approximately 2,700 components have been revised to further enhance the S-Class experience.
Among the key changes is a redesigned front end featuring an illuminated grille that is 20 per cent larger than before, giving the sedan an even stronger road presence. Inside, the new S-Class adopts the latest Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) supercomputer and an advanced MBUX Superscreen, delivering a more immersive and intuitive digital experience.

Ride comfort remains a priority, with the renowned AIRMATIC air suspension continuing to provide the refined driving characteristics that have made the S-Class the benchmark in the luxury sedan segment.
Rare Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Exhibit
Motorsport enthusiasts were also treated to a rare display of the Mercedes MGP W01 Formula One car, the machine that marked the beginning of the partnership between PETRONAS and the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team.
The exhibit holds particular significance for Malaysia, given PETRONAS’ role as the team’s long-standing Title and Technical Partner. Since the collaboration began in 2010, the partnership has contributed to one of Formula One’s most dominant eras, delivering eight consecutive Constructors’ Championships and seven straight Drivers’ Championships.

Alongside the Formula One car, visitors were also able to view a selection of classic Mercedes-Benz models and high-performance Mercedes-AMG vehicles, offering a glimpse into the brand’s rich automotive heritage.
Malaysia’s Special Place in Mercedes-Benz History
While the anniversary celebrates a global legacy, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia also used the occasion to highlight the country’s important role in the brand’s development.
The relationship between Mercedes-Benz and Malaysia dates back more than a century, with the Sultan of Johor believed to have been among the earliest owners of a Mercedes-Benz vehicle in Malaya.
Official sales began in 1951 through Cycle & Carriage, while local assembly operations started in 1968. One of the most significant milestones came in 1983 when Malaysia became the first country outside Germany to assemble the iconic Mercedes-Benz S-Class, specifically the 380 SE.
The establishment of the Pekan production facility in 2004 further strengthened Malaysia’s position within the brand’s regional operations. More recently, the plant achieved two major milestones: the production of the first locally assembled Mercedes-Benz EQ model, the EQS 500 4MATIC, and the rollout of its 100,000th Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicle.
Today, Malaysia plays an even greater role through regional operations such as Mercedes-Benz Parts Logistics Asia-Pacific and Mercedes-Benz Tech Malaysia, reinforcing the country’s strategic importance to the brand’s future growth.

Beyond celebrating its past, Mercedes-Benz also highlighted its continued focus on customer ownership experiences through initiatives such as Agility+ and Young Star Agility+.
These programmes offer flexible financing and ownership solutions for both new and pre-owned Mercedes-Benz models, while giving customers access to a broader ecosystem of services and exclusive brand experiences.
As the “140 Years. 140 Places.” journey continues around the globe until October, Mercedes-Benz says the celebration serves as a reminder of how innovation, craftsmanship, and customer-centricity have shaped the company for more than a century — and will continue to define its future.
