Honda Malaysia has introduced an expanded CR-V range, headlined by the first-ever dual-hybrid offering within a single Honda model line-up in the country.

The C-segment SUV is now available in three variants: the 2.0L e:HEV E (RM178,200), 1.5L V Turbo (RM181,900), and the range-topping 2.0L e:HEV RS (RM195,900), prices quoted on-the-road without insurance.

The key development is strategic rather than cosmetic. By offering two hybrid variants instead of one, Honda is widening the price bandwidth for electrified ownership, positioning the CR-V as a core pillar in its hybrid growth plan for Malaysia.

2.0L e:HEV: 184PS and 335Nm

Both hybrid variants are powered by Honda’s 2.0-litre e:HEV system, delivering 184PS and 335Nm of torque. Unlike conventional parallel hybrids, Honda’s system primarily uses the electric motor to drive the wheels, with the petrol engine acting as a generator under most conditions. This architecture produces strong low-end torque and smoother acceleration, characteristics that suit an SUV’s weight and real-world driving demands.

The system automatically transitions between three operating modes — EV Drive, Hybrid Drive, and Engine Drive — depending on speed and load. At lower speeds, the CR-V runs predominantly on electric power. During steady cruising, the engine may take over for improved efficiency. The process is seamless, requiring no driver intervention.

The e:HEV variants also introduce an Individual Drive Mode, allowing drivers to customise steering feel, throttle response, and instrumentation display. This adds a layer of driver engagement without compromising efficiency.

Refinement and Variant Differentiation

Visually, the updated CR-V retains its broad-shouldered SUV stance, but hybrid variants receive 18-inch Berlina Black alloy wheels, while the turbocharged V variant rides on 18-inch Sparkle Silver alloys. A new exterior colour, Blazing Red Pearl, has been added to the palette.

Digital Ecosystem Takes Priority

The biggest across-the-board upgrade is technology integration. All variants receive a 9-inch Advanced Display Audio system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. More significantly, the system now integrates Google built-in services, including Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play, reducing reliance on smartphone mirroring.

Honda is also introducing a Digital Key for the first time in Malaysia with the CR-V. Owners can lock, unlock, and start the vehicle using their smartphone. Remote Window Close and Remote Power Tailgate functions are integrated into the Honda CONNECT app, reinforcing the brand’s push toward a more software-driven ownership experience.

These updates position the CR-V competitively against newer Chinese and Korean rivals that have emphasised connected features as a selling point.

Expanded Safety

Blind Spot Information (BSI) and Cross Traffic Monitor (CTM) are now standard across the range, addressing two high-frequency real-world driving scenarios: lane changes and reversing out of parking bays.

BSI alerts the driver via side mirror indicators when vehicles are detected in adjacent blind spots, while CTM monitors cross traffic when reversing and provides audible and visual warnings. These additions strengthen the CR-V’s safety offering without restricting advanced features to the top variant.

Combined with Honda’s broader driver-assistance systems, the CR-V maintains its standing as one of the more safety-focused options in the segment.

Market Positioning

At RM178,200, the e:HEV E undercuts the turbocharged V variant while offering electrified performance. The RS hybrid at RM195,900 sits as a technology- and image-led flagship without breaching the RM200,000 threshold.

By offering two hybrid price points, Honda reduces the entry barrier to e:HEV ownership and avoids positioning hybrid solely as a premium add-on. This approach aligns with broader market trends in Malaysia, where hybrid adoption is increasing but full EV penetration remains constrained by infrastructure and cost sensitivity.

Strategic Implication
