2026 Kia Carnival 7-Seater Review: Impossible to Dislike

If someone asked me to recommend just one family MPV in Malaysia without giving me a budget, the Kia Carnival would almost certainly be the first name that comes to mind, simply because it gets almost everything right.

After spending time with the seven-seater variant priced at RM248,888, I walked away with one conclusion – it is genuinely difficult to find a reason not to like this thing. Every time I tried to nitpick, the Carnival somehow reminded me why it continues to sit at the top of the family MPV food chain.

It doesn’t look like a typical MPV

Let’s be honest. Most MPVs are designed with practicality first and style second. The Kia Carnival however, manages to do both.

Its long bonnet, upright stance, distinctive LED lighting and large grille give it an SUV-like presence rather than the “school van” appearance that many people associate with MPVs. Despite measuring over five metres in length, the proportions work remarkably well, and it still looks modern several years after this generation was introduced.

It has road presence without looking flashy, making it equally suitable for family duties, corporate transport or even hotel limousine service.

Seven seats done properly

While many buyers automatically gravitate towards eight- or eleven-seater MPVs, there is a strong argument for the seven-seater Carnival.

The individual second-row captain seats transform the cabin into something that feels closer to a luxury lounge than a people mover. Access to the third row is easy, while every passenger enjoys generous legroom, headroom and shoulder room.

The third row is also genuinely usable by adults, something that cannot be said about many large SUVs that advertise themselves as seven-seaters.

There are USB charging ports, numerous storage spaces, cup holders, air-conditioning vents for every row and enough thoughtful touches that make long-distance journeys much less tiring for everyone on board.

Whether you’re heading from Kuala Lumpur to Penang or making the annual balik kampung trip, this is one of the few vehicles where nobody has to fight over the “good seat.”

The 2.2-Litre Diesel is still one of the best engines around

At the heart of the Carnival is Kia’s proven 2.2-litre Smartstream turbocharged diesel engine producing 193 PS and 441 Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Those numbers don’t fully tell the story. The real highlight is the effortless torque delivery. With 441 Nm available, the Carnival simply glides along with minimal effort. Fully loaded with seven passengers and luggage, overtaking remains easy, while highway cruising feels relaxed and composed.

This is exactly the sort of engine you want in a vehicle of this size.

There’s no need to constantly chase high engine speeds because the torque does all the hard work for you. It makes everyday driving surprisingly effortless, whether you’re navigating city traffic or covering hundreds of kilometres on the North-South Expressway.

It drives better than something this big should

This is probably the Carnival’s biggest surprise. While you expect it to be comfortable and spacious above everything else, what you don’t expect is how composed and confidence-inspiring it feels behind the wheel.

The steering is accurate, body control is well managed, and the suspension does an excellent job of absorbing poor road surfaces without feeling floaty. Despite its size, it doesn’t feel cumbersome once you’re moving.

In fact, after a few minutes behind the wheel, you almost forget that you’re driving a vehicle measuring more than five metres long. Highway refinement is another highlight, with excellent stability at speed and impressive ride comfort that makes long-distance journeys genuinely enjoyable.

kia carnival

Yes, it is huge…

There is one downside though – the size.

kia carnival

At over five metres long and almost two metres wide, there’s simply no getting around physics. Tight multi-storey car parks, narrow residential roads and older shopping centres can sometimes make you question your life choices.

But here’s the interesting part. The size quickly becomes less intimidating because Kia has equipped the Carnival with plenty of technology to help you. Large mirrors, excellent visibility, parking sensors and a high-resolution surround-view camera make manoeuvring significantly easier than you’d expect.

kia carnival

I actually put this to the test in one of the more challenging places imaginable — the notoriously tight Chowrasta Market car park in Penang. If you’ve driven there before, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. Tight ramps, narrow lanes and limited room for error.

The Carnival passed with flying colours.

kia carnival

Yes, I needed to pay attention. Yes, I had to take things slowly. But at no point did I feel overwhelmed. The cameras, sensors and excellent visibility gave me enough confidence to thread this giant MPV through without drama.

If it can survive Chowrasta, chances are it’ll survive your neighbourhood mall car park too.

Safety

For a vehicle designed primarily to transport families, safety naturally becomes one of the Carnival’s strongest selling points.

Depending on the variant, buyers get a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems that includes Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist, Smart Cruise Control and Safe Exit Assist.

These systems work quietly in the background without feeling intrusive, giving drivers an additional layer of confidence during everyday journeys.

kia carnival

Combined with multiple airbags, Electronic Stability Control, ISOFIX child-seat anchor points and a rigid body structure, the Carnival delivers the peace of mind that family buyers expect.

Ownership is better than many people realise

One of the misconceptions surrounding Kia ownership is that servicing and long-term support are somehow inferior to more established Japanese brands.

kia carnival

That perception simply doesn’t hold much weight today as the Carnival is backed by Kia Malaysia’s comprehensive five-year or 100,000 km manufacturer’s warranty, while the brand has continued expanding its dealer and aftersales network nationwide.

The 2.2-litre diesel engine itself has also built a reputation globally for being durable when maintained according to schedule.

kia carnival

Even better, Kia Malaysia has recently confirmed that both older and newer Kia diesel engines can safely operate on biodiesel blends of up to B30.

While the company still recommends using B7 diesel whenever possible, owners who fill up with Malaysia’s B15 diesel at the black pump will not void their vehicle warranty. That is reassuring news, particularly as Malaysia gradually increases biodiesel blend requirements and availability.

kia carnival

In other words, using locally available diesel fuel is far less of a concern than some buyers may have assumed.

The verdict

There are plenty of excellent family vehicles on sale in Malaysia today.

kia carnival

Some are more luxurious, some are more affordable, some are more powerful, but very few manage to combine design, practicality, comfort, safety, performance, driving dynamics, durability, reliability, ownership confidence and long-distance usability as convincingly as the Kia Carnival.

No vehicle is perfect, and yes, you’ll occasionally wish it were about half a metre shorter when squeezing into older car parks. Beyond that, though, it’s difficult to find meaningful faults.

kia carnival

The Carnival isn’t just an excellent MPV. It is one of those rare vehicles that makes every journey easier, whether you’re ferrying children to school, taking clients to meetings or driving the family across the country for a holiday.

Would I buy one? Absolutely.

kia carnival

More importantly, I genuinely don’t think you’ll regret buying one either. It is one of those rare vehicles that simply grows on you with every kilometre, and by the time you’ve lived with it for a while, you’ll probably wonder why you didn’t buy one sooner.

For me, it remains the benchmark family MPV in Malaysia—and until something significantly better comes along, it’s going to take something very special to knock the Kia Carnival off that pedestal.
