Proton is Preparing More than 300 Young Talent in the Automotive Industry

Proton is strengthening its role as a training ground for future automotive talent as Malaysia faces increasing demand for skills in artificial intelligence, digital technology, and green mobility.

Founded in 1983, PROTON has been central to Malaysia’s industrialisation journey. Today, with the global automotive sector shifting rapidly towards electrification and advanced technologies, the company is aligning its talent development strategy with national priorities.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang recently highlighted a shortage of skilled workers in AI, digital proficiency, and green technologies, despite a 10% increase in STEM enrolment over the past five years. PROTON says its ongoing initiatives are aimed at narrowing this gap.

Since 2018, the Proton Young Talent (PYT) management trainee programme has recruited 311 participants across 27 batches. The scheme offers rotational exposure across manufacturing, research and development, sales, operations, and electric vehicle (EV) technology.

The company has also partnered with agencies such as the Department of Manpower (JTM) under the Ministry of Human Resources to co-develop training modules, create internship pathways, and support technical and vocational education and training (TVET). The Proton Advanced Automotive Technology Institute is part of these efforts to enhance industry-specific training.

PYT participants are also gaining global experience. For example, mechanical engineering graduate Umaibala A/L Rajendiran spent six months at Proton R&D and Geely in China, focusing on suspension and braking systems while also adapting to cross-cultural work environments.

The programme also includes non-technical roles. Accounting graduate Halisha Halim joined PROTON’s Group Communication team, where she is responsible for press releases and media engagement. Meanwhile, computer science graduate Lan Sue Sim was assigned to PRO-NET, PROTON’s EV-focused subsidiary, where she analysed consumer concerns around battery life, charging, and range anxiety.

PROTON says providing real responsibilities to young recruits is part of its strategy to build leadership skills. PYT members have presented to national leaders, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, at major product launches such as the Proton e.MAS 7.

“True leadership in the evolving automotive industry hinges on exceptional talent,” said Shafinaz Binti Jamaludin, PROTON’s Head of Learning & Talent Management. “Our focus is on creating a diverse and dynamic environment where young professionals are not only prepared for the future but also shaping it.”
