Proton has officially opened bookings for the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV, marking a major step forward in the brand’s electrification journey. As Proton’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), the e.MAS 7 PHEV is positioned as a practical bridge between conventional internal combustion vehicles and fully electric cars, offering electric-first driving without the range anxiety that still concerns many Malaysian buyers.

With a tentative price range of RM110,000 to RM130,000, the e.MAS 7 PHEV is aimed squarely at the heart of the mass-market SUV segment. Customers can now place a booking with a RM99 fee, and early adopters are incentivised with a rebate on the booking amount for a limited number of units. The model is expected to make its official market debut in 2026.

At the core of the e.MAS 7 PHEV is Proton’s dual-powered EV philosophy, which prioritises electric driving for daily use while retaining a petrol engine to extend range and flexibility.

This approach allows owners to complete short commutes and urban journeys purely on electric power, while still being able to undertake long-distance trips without needing to rely solely on charging infrastructure.

The plug-in hybrid system combines a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with electric motors and a dedicated hybrid transmission. Together, the system produces a combined output of 262 PS and 262 Nm of torque, delivering strong real-world performance that is more than sufficient for both city driving and highway cruising.

Drivers can select between multiple drive modes, including EV-only operation, hybrid driving for efficiency, or a more performance-oriented setting when maximum output is required.

Variants and Battery Options

The Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV is offered in three variants: Prime, Premium, and Premium Plus, all sharing the same hybrid powertrain but differing in battery size, equipment levels, and charging capability.

The Prime variant serves as the entry point to the range and is equipped with an 18.4 kWh LFP battery, enabling an EV-only driving range of up to 105 km. It focuses on value and practicality while still delivering the full plug-in hybrid experience.

Stepping up to the Premium variant brings a significant upgrade in comfort and technology, while retaining the same 18.4 kWh battery and electric range. Buyers opting for this variant benefit from more premium design elements, larger wheels, enhanced interior features, and a broader suite of convenience and safety technology.

At the top of the line sits the Premium Plus variant, which features a larger 29.8 kWh battery. This extends the EV-only range to approximately 170 km, making it possible for many owners to complete several days of driving without engaging the petrol engine.

The Premium Plus also supports faster DC charging, allowing for quicker energy top-ups when needed, and includes the most comprehensive equipment list in the range.

Efficiency and Long-Distance Capability

One of the standout highlights of the e.MAS 7 PHEV is its impressive overall driving range. When operating in hybrid mode with both the battery and petrol engine working together, the SUV is capable of travelling over 1,000 km on a full tank and full charge. This makes it particularly appealing for interstate travel and long-distance commuting.

Fuel consumption in battery-depleted hybrid operation is rated at around 4.3 to 4.4 litres per 100 km, underscoring the efficiency benefits of Proton’s plug-in hybrid system. Owners who charge regularly will be able to significantly reduce fuel usage, especially in urban conditions where electric driving is prioritised.

Design and Interior Technology

Visually, the e.MAS 7 PHEV closely follows the design language of the fully electric e.MAS 7, with clean surfaces, a modern SUV stance, and distinctive lighting elements. Higher variants are equipped with a full-width illuminated front light bar, larger alloy wheels, and subtle design enhancements that differentiate the PHEV from conventional Proton models.

Inside, the cabin places strong emphasis on digitalisation and comfort. Depending on variant, highlights include a large central infotainment display, head-up display, wireless charging, ventilated front seats, a premium multi-speaker sound system, and customisable ambient lighting. Smartphone connectivity, voice control, and over-the-air software update capability further reinforce the e.MAS 7 PHEV’s modern credentials.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety is another key focus for the e.MAS 7 PHEV. The SUV is equipped with a comprehensive suite of active and passive safety systems, including multiple airbags and advanced driver assistance features.

These systems are designed to support the driver in everyday situations, enhance highway driving confidence, and improve overall occupant protection.

A Strategic Step for Proton

The introduction of the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV reflects Proton’s broader strategy to offer electrified vehicles that suit Malaysian driving habits and infrastructure realities. By combining meaningful electric range with the reassurance of a petrol engine, the e.MAS 7 PHEV positions itself as a highly versatile alternative to both traditional SUVs and full EVs.

With competitive pricing, strong performance, long driving range, and a well-equipped variant line-up, the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV is set to play a key role in accelerating mainstream adoption of electrified vehicles in Malaysia. Bookings are now open, and early interest suggests it could become one of Proton’s most important launches in recent years.
