Higher Safety With Vision Panels

DAF, MAN and Volvo are among several truck manufacturers preparing their latest improvements for passenger door glazing to satisfy the London “Safer Lorry” scheme proposals on “vision panels”.

Three MAN dealers in the UK now offer retrofitted additional windows to the lower nearside door panels on the cabs of TGX, TGS, TGM and TGL trucks.

Nick Handy, MAN Truck & Bus UK Sales Engineering Manager, said, “We take the issue of vulnerable-road-user safety very seriously and have been looking at the best methods to offer this solution to our customers post-registration to enable nearside direct vision to be increased.”

Volvo trucks on display at the CLOCS event next week will include a low-entry cab FE 6×2 rear-steer tipper and an N3 (on-road specification) FM 8×4 tipper with additional window in the passenger door. Volvo is also showing a four-camera, cyclist-proximity warning system.

One selling point of the additional door window offered by DAF Trucks and designed by Cheshire-based Astra Vehicle Technologies is that it allows the standard door window to be lowered far enough to give the driver access to the nearside door-mounted mirror.
