Chery’s New LEPAS EV Brand Breaks Cover — Malaysia Entry on the Horizon

lepas

Chery Group has officially unveiled its newest global sub-brand, LEPAS, at the Auto China 2026, marking a bold step into the next phase of premium electric mobility.

Positioned as a design-led, lifestyle-focused EV marque, LEPAS made its global debut under the theme “Elegance Moves the World”, alongside the first two models—the LEPAS L6 EV and LEPAS L4 EV. The brand signals Chery’s intent to move beyond mass electrification and into a more refined, experience-driven segment of the new energy vehicle (NEV) market.

A New EV Brand with Global — and Malaysian — Ambitions

While LEPAS is being introduced as a global brand, its arrival is particularly relevant for Malaysia. With Chery already gaining strong traction locally through its core brand and sub-brands like Omoda Jaecoo, industry observers expect LEPAS to eventually form part of the group’s expanding electrified portfolio here.

Given Malaysia’s accelerating EV adoption, improving charging infrastructure, and government push towards electrification, LEPAS could slot in as a more premium, design-centric alternative within Chery’s local line-up—potentially sitting above existing offerings in both technology and positioning.

A Shift Towards “Elegant Mobility”

LEPAS enters the market at a time when the global EV race is evolving. Where the past decade prioritised scale and raw technological advancement, the next phase is expected to focus more on user experience, refinement, and brand identity.

Built on Chery’s global R&D capabilities and a dedicated intelligent EV architecture, LEPAS models will span multiple segments—from compact crossovers to larger SUVs. The brand is underpinned by three key pillars: distinctive “Leopard Aesthetics” design, advanced intelligent technologies, and a focus on premium interior space and comfort.

LEPAS L6 EV: Urban-Focused, Tech-Heavy SUV

Leading the charge is the LEPAS L6 EV, positioned as a core model for city users and young families.

The L6 EV features a low, wide stance with sharp “Hunting Eye” headlamps, giving it a more planted and assertive look compared to conventional SUVs in its class. Inside, the vehicle is designed to adapt to different usage scenarios, transforming from a daily commuter into a lifestyle-oriented space.

On the technology front, it introduces a suite of advanced systems including assisted driving functions, intelligent parking capabilities, and an AI-driven in-car assistant aimed at simplifying everyday driving tasks.

LEPAS L4 EV: Compact Size, Big Capability

Also making its debut is the LEPAS L4 EV, a smaller, more agile SUV designed for urban mobility.

Despite its compact footprint, the L4 EV packs a 160 kW electric motor and features a multi-link rear suspension—uncommon in its segment—along with over 20 advanced driver assistance functions. The model is engineered to balance everyday usability with confident performance on both city roads and highways.

Range is estimated at around 500 km, supported by fast-charging capability, making it suitable for both daily commutes and longer weekend drives.

What This Means for Malaysia

Although no official launch timeline has been confirmed, LEPAS is definitely coming to Malaysia with outlets being built as we speak. With the brand focusing heavily on design, intelligent features, and a more premium ownership experience, it could appeal to a growing segment of Malaysian buyers looking beyond traditional EV value propositions.

Once introduced locally, LEPAS models would likely compete with emerging Chinese EV brands already making inroads into Malaysia, while also challenging more established players in the premium compact SUV space.

For now, LEPAS represents Chery’s next big move—not just in electrification, but in redefining how EVs are positioned, experienced, and perceived globally.
