GWM Malaysia has received more than 800 bookings for the newly launched WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV in within its first week on sale, signalling strong early demand for what is positioned as the country’s first locally assembled luxury new-energy MPV.
The plug-in hybrid model made its official debut on 29 January 2026 at MITEC, with the launch officiated by Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, YB Sim Tze Tzin. Beyond being a new model introduction, the G9 is also being framed as a strategic step towards establishing Malaysia as a regional production and export hub for higher-value electrified vehicles within ASEAN.

The government highlighted the significance of the CKD programme, noting that Malaysia’s ecosystem of more than 70 specialised automotive vendors and its skilled workforce provides a strong foundation for technology transfer and industrial growth.
Local assembly also enables the brand to tap into the country’s Free Trade Agreements, opening the door for duty-free exports to right-hand-drive markets in the region while supporting the goals of the New Industrial Master Plan 2030.
For GWM, the early booking numbers are being interpreted as validation of its push into the premium electrified space. The company says the response reflects growing acceptance of intelligent hybrid mobility among Malaysian buyers, particularly in the luxury family-focused MPV segment.

Positioned around a “First Class for All” concept, the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV combines high-end comfort with electrified performance in a locally assembled package. Power comes from GWM’s Hi4 intelligent hybrid system, which enables up to 170 km of pure electric driving and a combined range of over 1,000 km, giving it the ability to function as a near-silent daily commuter while retaining long-distance touring capability.
Priced at RM269,800, the model sits squarely in the upper end of the MPV market, and its strong initial take-up underscores both the appeal of premium electrified people movers and Malaysia’s growing role in GWM’s regional new-energy vehicle strategy.
