By the end of 2021, 100 McDonald’s restaurant outlets across Italy will have 2 electric vehicle charging points each.
The move is in line with McD’s efforts in facilitating the transition towards electric mobility, which is going to be the future of the automotive landscape worldwide.
A new partnership between McDonald’s Italia and energy transformation specialists Enel X was established yesterday, which will see the installation of 200 charging points for electric vehicles inside the 100 McDonald’s car parks across Italy.
It is said that the charging stations will offer a new service to customers, allowing two vehicles to be charged simultaneously with available power of up to 22 kW in AC for the “JuicePole” charger and of at least 50 kW in DC for the “JuicePump” charger.
With the latter, an average of about 30 minutes will be sufficient to “charge up” with electrical energy, the equivalent of the average time it takes McDonald’s customers to have a meal inside the restaurant.
It is said that the charging points working at maximum output will lead to a net saving of over 1,800 tons of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere, a figure that corresponds to the CO2 absorbed by over 100,000 trees in one year.
“We are the biggest restaurant chain in the world and we feel we should get directly involved in some of today’s more urgent social and environmental challenges,”states Tommaso Valle, Corporate Relations and Sustainability Director at McDonald’s Italia.
The decision to implement this project strengthens McDonald’s commitment towards sustainability, the cornerstone of the entire company strategy and which develops right through the entire supply chain, from the field to the tray.
“The agreement with McDonald’s enables people to easily and consciously approach the world of electric mobility, the only real option for travelling with due regard for the environment,” stated Federico Caleno, Head of e-mobility Italy for Enel X.
On the basis of available figures, the number of electrical vehicles in the world is over 7.7 million, of which over 2.25 million were sold in 2019 alone.
To date, Enel X has installed over 10,500 charging points in Italy and expects to reach a total of 28,000 by 2022.
Thanks to Enel X’s e-Mobility Emission Saving tool it has been calculated that the charging services provided using the connected infrastructures have enabled its customers to travel over 100 million km on electricity and saving the environment over 12 million kg of CO2, equal to the quantity absorbed by about 670,000 trees in one year.
Well done, McDonald’s Italia. Let us hope that the franchise does something similar in Malaysia as well in the near future in an effort to save the world and the environment.

Volvo Car Malaysia today announced that the S60 T8 PHEV is now available as Completely Knocked-Down (CKD) version in Malaysia. The car was launched in CBU form back in October 2019.
Assembled in Volvo’s plant in Shah Alam which also happens to be the oldest car plant in the country, the price of the S60 T8 remains unchanged at RM295,888 on the road without insurance.
Specs wise, things remain largely the same except for the addition of the Park Assist Pilot system and a powered boot which now come as standard. It is also worth mentioning that the 12V socket and netting in the boot which was there in the CBU version, as well as the Birch Light exterior colour option, are now gone.
Anyways, here’s how Park Assist Pilot works:
Power comes courtesy of a 2.0-litre twin-charged petrol engine that drives the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and an electric motor which sends power exclusively to the rear wheels. Total system output stands at 407 PS and 640 Nm of torque, which translates into a 0-100 km/h run in an impressive 4.4 seconds.
The hybrid battery on the other hand, is an 11.6 kWh lithium-ion unit which offers an electric driving range of up to 49 km. It can be fully charged in about three hours using a 3.7 kW outlet.
While key exterior features include the R-Design kit, Thor’s Hammer LED DRL, LED headlights and taillights, 19-inch wheels, twin mufflers, and blacked out wing mirrors, interior highlights include Charcoal Fine Nappa Leather upholstery, a tailored dashboard, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and the Sensus Connect infotainment system that is fully compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
On the subject of safety, the Volvo S60 T8 CKD offers City Safety with Autobrake technology, which assists the driver in avoiding potential collisions and is the only system in the market to recognise pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. In a world-first for the mid-size sedan segment, City Safety now also engages auto braking to mitigate oncoming collisions.
The Pilot Assist system – which supports the driver with steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 130km/h – has been upgraded with improved cornering performance.
The Volvo S60 T8 CKD also includes Run-off Road Mitigation, Oncoming Lane Mitigation and other steering assistance systems. The Cross Traffic Alert further enhances safety for people inside and outside the car designed to detect traffic crossing behind the car when reversing.
The Evoque joins the Range Rover Sport and Range Rover in offering plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options and it might just come to Malaysia if the National Automotive Policy 2018 (NAP) gives incentives for PHEV and low emission vehicles.
For this new Evoque PHEV, Land Rover will add a 300-volt plug-in hybrid will toward the end of next year. It will have an electric motor mated to a new 3-cylinder petrol engine that will reduce CO2 emissions to below 45 grams per km.
The Evoque’s all-wheel drive versions will be available with a 48-volt mild-hybrid that adds a belt-driven starter-generator to capture energy lost in braking and add electric assistance under acceleration.
The engine will also shut off below speeds of 17km/h to save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions. The most fuel efficient mild-hybrid diesel version has CO2 emissions of 149 g/km, Land Rover said.
Electrification is key to reducing JLR’s CO2 levels below the agreed 135 g/km average needed to avoid fines when the European Union introduce tougher CO2 emissions limits for new vehicles in 2020/21.
JLR’s average European emissions are currently at 178 g/km, the company said earlier this year. JLR said last year every new model will come with electrified options from 2020 onwards.
The most powerful option is a petrol version with an output of 296 hp. The Evoque will continue to be available with a 9-speed automatic gearbox. This new Evoque is not bigger than the model it replaces and features almost identical footprint. However, thanks to Land Rover’s new mixed-metal Premium Transverse Architecture, it provides more room for the passengers, especially at the back. The cargo space is some 6% larger at 610 liters growing up to 1,430 liters with the rear seats folded. Look out for its arrival here in Malaysia in the coming months.
