New FIA Sanctioned Racetrack to be Built in Langkawi

ORIC PKB Signing

Open Road Asia Sdn Bhd and the Kedah state government’s investment and development arm, Permodalan Kedah Berhad (“PKB”) today entered a joint venture to develop a motorsports themed tourist destination in Langkawi called the OPen Road International Circuit (“ORIC”) & Integrated Resorts (“ORIC and IR”) .

The JV was sealed at a signing ceremony at Wisma Darul Aman between Open Road Asia and PKB, with YAB Haji Muhammad Sanusi Md. Nor, Menteri Besar of Kedah, witnessing. Open Road Asia was represented by the Founder and Group Advisor Dato’ David Goh while PKB was represented by its Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”), Encik Abdul Rahman Haji Din.

The Open Road International Circuit and Integrated Resorts which will be developed atop a tract of 183 acres of sea-facing land in Bukit Malut, will not only encompass a FIA-sanctioned motorsports circuit, but a fully-integrated resort which consist of luxury residential properties, high-end luxury retail outlets, 5-star hotels, 4S automobile dealerships, 900-cars storage facility, petrol refuelling stations as well as various tourist attractions and world-renowned restaurants.

Dato’ David said, “This ORIC Integrated project, with a gross development value of RM1.3 billion is expected to provide an immediate high impact economic boost to Pulau Langkawi and the state of Kedah, and Malaysia upon its completion in 5 years’ time.

With a projected increase of high-spending and affluent tourists’ arrival both locally and internationally, it is envisioned that this project will help create an endless stream of business and job opportunities for Kedahans via the island’s economic expansion. It is our hope that this project will further position Malaysia as Southeast Asia’s most preferred tourist destination.”

Open Road International Circuit

Dato’ David also added that the upcoming racing circuit will score a number of world’s first in racing circuit designs that will include one of the longest circuit straight in the world, as well as banked curves or carousel, and down-hill-elevation-drop multiple hairpins.

“Nurburgring of the East”

Modelled after the Nurburgring in Germany, this 5.8km-long racing track is poised to be the “Nurburgring of the East”, as personally coined by Dato’ David himself. Upon ORIC’s completion by Q2/2023, this world-class racing attraction will definitely put Langkawi at the forefront of motorsports in Asia, providing a platform to nurture automotive research and development, testing ground and racing destinations for major automotive manufacturers, motorsports enthusiasts and racing teams the world over.

Boosting tourism

YAB Tuan Haji Muhammad Sanusi said, “I am confident that this development will be able to attract more foreign tourists and benefit Langkawi Island and its people. The international racing circuit will definitely be an attraction for tourism in Langkawi in addition to the existing attractions”.

“The decision by PKB and Open Road Asia Sdn Bhd to boost tourism in Langkawi Island through the proposed development of a world-class racing circuit is very appropriate. I would like to invite every agency and department involved to help facilitate this proposed project between PKB and Open Road Asia Sdn Bhd,” he said.
