MAN Truck & Bus has taken the wraps off a new heavyweight flagship, introducing the MAN TGX 41.640 8×4/4 heavy-duty tractor unit capable of handling a gross combination weight of up to 250 tonnes.
Making its world premiere as a full series-production solution, the new truck marks MAN’s return to the top tier of heavy-duty transport, a segment reserved for the kind of machinery built to move truly enormous cargo such as wind turbine components, high-voltage transformers, and even submarines.
At the heart of the new TGX is a 15.2-litre MAN D3876 inline-six diesel engine producing 640 hp and 3,000 Nm of torque. Built to deal with extreme loads at very low speeds, the engine is paired with an automated MAN TipMatic 12.30 OD gearbox featuring an integrated torque converter clutch, which allows the truck to pull away more smoothly and with significantly more force under heavy loads.

According to MAN, the torque converter clutch can deliver up to 1.59 times more torque when needed, which is especially important in heavy-haul work where smooth, controlled movement matters just as much as brute strength. The truck also comes with a Retarder 40 system for strong and consistent braking performance, especially useful when dealing with massive loads on descents.
To make sure the truck is up to the task, MAN has also fitted it with a special gearbox for extreme-duty use, along with powerful hydraulic and compressed air systems that help control the multiple axles typically found on heavy-duty trailers. This allows for more precise steering and levelling, even in difficult operating conditions.
Unlike many specialist heavy-haul solutions that rely heavily on third-party conversions, the new 250-tonne TGX is offered by MAN as a complete factory-backed solution through MAN Individual.

The four-axle base vehicle is first produced at MAN’s Munich plant before being sent to the Truck Modification Centre in Wittlich, where it receives heavy-duty couplings, reinforced cooling systems, and upgraded diesel and hydraulic tanks.
The truck’s heavy-duty hardware is grouped into a dedicated tower behind the cab, housing a 960-litre diesel tank, a 290-litre hydraulic tank, four pressure tanks with 160 litres of additional air supply, and a specialised heavy-duty transport cooling system. Together, these systems help the truck maintain stable performance even when operating at low speeds under extreme mechanical stress.
The fifth wheel setup consists of a JOST JSK 38 C 3.5-inch unit mounted on the frame, complete with an 800 mm shifting device for better load distribution. For more specialised operations, the vehicle can also be fitted for pushing or pulling duties, with a front register coupling and an optional ROCKINGER 56 EA rear coupling.

MAN is also giving customers the option to spec the truck with the MAN Individual Lion S package, which adds a more premium look and feel through carbon-style trim, blacked-out exterior details, red accents, and a more upmarket cabin. Options such as a 24-inch television, an electrically adjustable TV recliner, and ambient lighting are also available, which is a bit wild for something built to haul transformers, but long-haul drivers probably won’t complain.
The first customer unit has already been delivered to BFS, MAN’s German rental partner specialising in heavy-duty vehicle hire. The truck will be made available to transport operators who need a high-capacity heavy-haul solution at short notice.

With this new model, MAN says it now offers one of the broadest commercial vehicle portfolios in the industry, spanning everything from 3.5-tonne vans to 250-tonne heavy-duty trucks. That line-up includes the TGE, TGL, TGM, TGS, and TGX, as well as fully electric models for selected weight classes from 12 to 42 tonnes.
In short, this is not your average truck launch. The new MAN TGX 41.640 is a seriously specialised machine designed for the most demanding transport jobs imaginable, while still being backed by the same service, warranty, and financing support as the brand’s regular production models.
