The countdown has officially begun. After weeks of anticipation, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has confirmed that the all-new Volkswagen Tayron will make its Malaysian debut next week, adding a brand-new SUV to the brand’s local line-up.

While full specifications and pricing remain under wraps until the official launch, there’s already plenty we know about Volkswagen’s latest seven-seater. Here’s everything you need to know before the covers come off.

It’s not replacing the Tiguan – it’s going above it

One of the biggest questions surrounding the Tayron is where it fits in Volkswagen’s SUV range.

The answer? Think of it as the spiritual successor to the Tiguan Allspace rather than the standard Tiguan.

Globally, the Tayron effectively replaces the long-wheelbase Tiguan Allspace, offering a roomier cabin, a more premium feel and the latest generation of Volkswagen technology. It sits above the regular Tiguan in size and is aimed squarely at families looking for genuine seven-seat practicality.

For Malaysia, that means Volkswagen will finally have a modern three-row SUV to take on rivals like the Mazda CX-8, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Peugeot 5008 and Skoda Kodiaq.

Bigger in every way

Compared to the outgoing Tiguan Allspace, the Tayron has grown in almost every dimension.

It measures approximately:

  • Length: 4,792 mm
  • Width: 1,853 mm
  • Height: 1,668 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2,791 mm

The result is noticeably more cabin space, particularly for second-row passengers, while the third row should be more usable than before.

Expect a generous luggage compartment too, especially with the third-row seats folded flat.

Expect Volkswagen’s latest design language

The Tayron adopts Volkswagen’s newest SUV styling, sharing much of its DNA with the latest Tiguan sold overseas.

Highlights include:

  • Slim IQ.Light LED headlamps
  • Illuminated front Volkswagen badge (market dependent)
  • Full-width LED light bar front and rear
  • Sharper body lines
  • Larger alloy wheels
  • Cleaner, more premium-looking rear end

Overall, it’s a much more sophisticated design than the Tiguan Allspace it replaces.

A completely new interior

Inside is where the biggest leap happens.

The Tayron receives Volkswagen’s latest digital cockpit, bringing a cleaner, more technology-focused cabin that feels significantly more premium.

Expect features such as:

  • Large freestanding central infotainment display
  • Fully digital instrument cluster
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Multiple USB-C ports
  • Ambient lighting
  • Wireless charging
  • Premium upholstery
  • Three-zone climate control (depending on variant)

Volkswagen has also redesigned the dashboard layout, reducing physical buttons while improving overall material quality.

What engine will Malaysia get?

Volkswagen Malaysia has yet to confirm the final powertrain. However, the most likely candidate is the familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged TSI petrol engine, paired with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission.

Depending on the version selected, outputs overseas range from around 204 PS to 265 PS, with both front-wheel-drive and 4MOTION all-wheel-drive variants available globally.

Whether Malaysia receives one or multiple engine options remains to be seen.

Safety should be a major highlight

Volkswagen has steadily expanded its driver assistance technologies across its latest models, and the Tayron is expected to continue that trend.

Features available globally include:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Front Assist with Autonomous Emergency Braking
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Park Assist
  • 360-degree camera
  • Multiple airbags

The final Malaysian specification will be confirmed at launch.

Who will it compete against?

The Tayron enters one of Malaysia’s fastest-growing SUV segments.

Its rivals are expected to include:

  • Mazda CX-8
  • Hyundai Santa Fe
  • Kia Sorento
  • Peugeot 5008

Volkswagen will likely position the Tayron as a premium European alternative, offering refined driving dynamics, German engineering and a high level of standard equipment.

When will it launch?

Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia has confirmed that the Tayron will be unveiled next week, with full pricing, variants and local specifications expected during the official launch event.

If local pricing remains competitive, the Tayron could become one of Volkswagen Malaysia’s most important launches in recent years, filling the gap left by the Tiguan Allspace while giving buyers another credible European option in the increasingly competitive three-row SUV market.
