A new edition of the BMW 2 Series Coupe is on the way, and according to the folks at Munich, the car is already in its final phase of development.

All set to be manufactured from the third quarter of 2021, the new 2 Series Coupe will be available in a couple of trim levels including a range-topping M variant, and an M240i xDrive Coupé which draws its drive torque from an in-line 6-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.

374 hp engine

According to BMW, the drive will generate a maximum output of 374 hp and is combined with an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. As for the M model, power will be sent to the wheels using the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system which is more biased towards the rear-wheels.

Regardless of the engine, all model variants of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé benefit from a particularly torsion-resistant body structure. Static torsional stiffness has been increased by around 12 per cent compared to the predecessor model too.

Stroke-dependent dampers

All model variants of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé will also come equipped with stroke-dependent dampers as standard, the fine-tuning of which leads to a noticeably optimised balance between sportiness and ride comfort.

That said, the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupe is currently undergoing dynamic testing, where its drive and suspension systems are being tuned under racetrack conditions.

50:50 balance

The unique selling points of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé in the competitive environment include the rear-wheel drive setup, an extremely powerful in-line 6-cylinder engine, and an almost 50:50 balanced axle load distribution.

At the same time, the car is being fine-tuned to optimise self-steering behaviour and the dynamics when building up lateral acceleration forces.

With a fully variable locking effect generated by an electric motor, the differential aids the new BMW 2 Series Coupé in optimising cornering performance with regard to traction and driving stability.

The targeted distribution of power between the rear wheels enables significantly higher lateral acceleration and also a noticeable increase in dynamics when accelerating as you come out of bends.

Design wise, nothing much has been revealed, but it was said that the 2 Series will come with model-specific front spoiler lip, front splitter,  air curtains, and air deflectors.

That said, more details will emerge as we draw closer to the global debut of the all-new BMW 2-Series and M2, so watch this space for more updates.
