Smart #5 Previewed in Malaysia – A Bold New Flagship EV

All set to be launched in October 2025, smart Malaysia recently allowed us to have a closer look at the smart #5 at its outlet in Glenmarie, giving us a glimpse at what looks like the final version which will be sold in Malaysia.

Bigger, more advanced, and more versatile than its siblings, the #1 and #3, this new SUV, at first glance, is unlike anything the brand has produced before. Measuring 4,705 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,705 mm tall, with a 2,900 mm wheelbase, it firmly places itself in the D-segment SUV category. Its proportions are commanding, and its rugged styling is a bold contrast to the playful urban look of the smaller smart models.

The exterior features boxy contours, frameless doors, short overhangs, dual-tone mirrors, and signature “floating” wheels. A set of design “easter eggs” are cleverly integrated around the body, adding to its character.

Whether in entry-level trim or in the sporty Brabus version, the smart #5 projects a premium and adventurous personality, making it as comfortable in the city as it is on weekend getaways.

In Malaysia, the smart #5 will be offered in three variants:

  • smart #5 Pro (RWD)
Powered by a 76 kWh LFP battery, the Pro delivers 340 PS and 373 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 6.9 seconds with a range of around 465 km (WLTP). Charging is convenient with 150 kW DC fast-charging, reaching 80% in about 30 minutes.
  • smart #5 Premium (RWD)
Stepping up to the Premium gets you a 100 kWh NMC battery with an 800 V system, extending range to as much as 590 km. Power output is slightly higher at 363 PS, while charging speeds soar — 400–450 kW DC charging can replenish 10–80% in just 15 minutes, alongside 22 kW AC support.
  • smart #5 Brabus (AWD)
The flagship Brabus version is all about performance. With dual motors producing a staggering 646 PS and 710 Nm, this SUV rockets from 0–100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. Despite the immense performance, it still offers a respectable 540 km of range thanks to the same 100 kWh battery.

Inside, the cabin is dominated by a series of screens: a 13-inch central AMOLED display, a 10.3-inch digital cluster, a passenger-side screen, and a 25.6-inch augmented reality head-up display.

These displays run on an AMD V2000 chipset with Unreal Engine graphics, paired with the brand’s latest Smart OS featuring a ChatGPT-powered voice assistant named Leo. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and OTA updates are all standard.

Entertainment is equally premium, with a 20-speaker Sennheiser 3D audio system supporting Dolby Atmos. Comfort features include ventilated and heated front seats, rear heated seats, oak-wood cabin trim, and 256-colour ambient lighting.

For relaxation, the SUV even has a “Comfort Mode” that transforms the seats into a near king-size recliner bed, perfect for long trips or breaks during charging.

Practicality is also a highlight, with a boot capacity of up to 1,530 litres, a 72-litre frunk, and 34 clever storage compartments spread throughout the interior.

Beyond luxury, the smart #5 is engineered for versatility. It supports multiple off-road drive modes such as Sand, Snow, Mud, and Rock, while also offering vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality at 3.3 kW — useful for powering appliances on camping trips. A large panoramic glass roof further enhances its outdoor appeal.

Safety hasn’t been overlooked. With an array of advanced driver assistance systems powered by Nvidia OrinX processors, the #5 offers Level 2+ autonomy features such as adaptive cruise control, automated lane changes, and intelligent parking. A reinforced body structure ensures robust crash protection, underscoring its premium SUV credentials.

With this preview, the smart #5 is poised to challenge the likes of the Tesla Model Y, Zeekr 7X, BYD Sealion 7, and XPeng G6 in Malaysia. Pricing has yet to be confirmed, but early estimates suggest a starting range of RM180,000 to RM230,000, with higher trims possibly stretching toward RM275,000.

Bookings have already opened through Pro-Net, with test-drive opportunities expected closer to launch.
