Great Wall Motor (GWM) has confirmed that the WEY G9, the brand’s upcoming premium electric MPV will be locally assembled in Malaysia, with production also supporting exports to Thailand, Indonesia, and other ASEAN markets.
Set to be priced at below RM300,000, the WEY G9 will become the first Chinese new energy premium MPV to be manufactured in Malaysia — a milestone that underlines the country’s growing role as a regional hub for electrified vehicles.
The launch strengthens GWM’s diverse line-up in Malaysia, which already spans the family-oriented HAVAL H6 HEV, the rugged TANK 300 and TANK 500 HEV SUVs, and the lifestyle-focused ORA EV range including the Good Cat and Ora 07.
Under the hood, the WEY G9 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine paired with a dual-motor hybrid system, delivering both efficiency and dynamic performance.
Power is channelled through a 4-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) to an intelligent electronically controlled all-wheel drive system, ensuring stability and traction across varied road conditions. Drivers can choose between multiple operating modes — EV Mode, EV Priority Mode, and Smart Hybrid Mode — tailoring performance and efficiency to their needs.
The hybrid setup produces a combined output of 442 PS and 642 Nm of torque, enabling the premium MPV to accelerate from 0–100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds, with a top speed of 200 km/h. Thanks to its 44.2 kWh battery pack, the G9 achieves an all-electric driving range of up to 170 km (NEDC), while the combined driving range stretches to as much as 1,000 km.
Charging is equally convenient, with DC fast charging (30–80%) completed in 26 minutes, and a full charge via 6.6 kW AC in around 6.5 hours. Fuel efficiency is another highlight, rated at just 1.2L/100 km (NEDC), or 6.2L/100 km when running at low state of charge — making the WEY G9 one of the most efficient large MPVs in its class.
