GWM Malaysia Eyes Big Growth By 2028, Confirms More SUVs are Coming

GWM

GWM Malaysia is done playing the short game. The Chinese automaker just laid out an aggressive 2026–2028 growth plan that revolves around more SUVs, more hybrid tech, a larger dealer footprint, and deeper local assembly efforts in Malaysia.

After a strong 2025 that saw the brand move nearly 5,900 vehicles locally — a 177% year-on-year jump — GWM now says it is targeting a 6% market share, 60,000 cumulative sales between 2026 and 2028, and a place among Malaysia’s Top 10 automotive brands. It also wants to be among the Top 3 Chinese brands here.

According to the company, its next wave of growth will be driven by a wider SUV line-up, led by the soon-to-arrive Tank 300 HEV, plus new B-segment and C-segment SUVs scheduled for 2026 and 2027. GWM also confirmed that a more premium or “luxury” C-segment SUV is part of the pipeline.

While GWM Malaysia did not officially name all of the upcoming models, there are a few likely candidates based on GWM’s global and regional product portfolio.

One of the strongest contenders for the B-SUV slot is the HAVAL Jolion Pro, a newer, more upmarket take on the Jolion formula that has already appeared in other right-hand-drive markets.

On the C-SUV front, the HAVAL Raptor remains the most obvious contender. As for the “luxury” C-SUV, don’t be surprised if it comes from WEY, the same premium sub-brand that now underpins GWM’s push upmarket. None of these have been officially confirmed for Malaysia yet, but all signs point in that direction.

What has already been confirmed is GWM’s continued commitment to hybridisation. The brand says its future portfolio here will continue to span ICE, HEV, PHEV and BEV models, with the company leaning heavily on its Hi4 hybrid system moving forward.

That technology has already made its Malaysian debut in the locally assembled WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV, which was launched earlier this year as a seven-seat luxury plug-in hybrid MPV with all-wheel drive, over 1,000 km of claimed total range, and a price tag below RM270,000.

Beyond products, GWM Malaysia also wants to significantly grow its retail and aftersales presence. The company is aiming for 60 dealer outlets nationwide, with upgraded showroom standards set to roll out from 2026 as part of a more premium and consistent brand experience.

On the aftersales side, GWM says it is backing customer confidence with technical training, a claimed 95% nationwide parts fulfilment rate, and the continued expansion of its GWM Care ownership support programme.

GWM Malaysia says it remains committed to CKD operations and wants Malaysia to play a larger role in its ASEAN strategy, not just as a sales market but also as a production and export hub.

That lines up with what we have already seen through the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV, which is locally assembled in Melaka and positioned as part of GWM’s wider regional new energy vehicle ambitions. In short, GWM is not just planning to launch a few more cars and call it a day. It is trying to build scale, credibility, and long-term relevance in Malaysia.
