The all-new BYD Shark Plug-in Hybrid Pickup made a surprise appearance in Malaysia today, and BYD Malaysia has confirmed its target to launch the model in the second half of 2026.
Currently on display at the BYD Tech Discovery Showcase in Plaza Arcadia, Desa ParkCity, the Shark’s presence marks the brand’s first foray into the hybrid pickup segment locally — a bold move in a market dominated by diesel-powered workhorses like the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max.

Based on Thai-market specifications, which are expected to be largely mirrored in Malaysia, the BYD Shark is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with dual electric motors — one on each axle — delivering a combined 430 hp and 650 Nm of torque.
This setup enables the Shark to sprint from 0–100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds, putting it among the quickest pickups on the market. The vehicle is built on BYD’s DMO (Dual Mode Off-Road) platform, offering all-wheel drive capability and a 29.58 kWh Blade LFP battery, coupled with a 59-litre fuel tank.

Together, this hybrid system promises a combined WLTP range of 670 km, with up to 85 km of pure electric driving. Charging options include 7 kW AC and 55 kW DC fast charging, and the Shark also supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality for powering external equipment — a feature increasingly valued by outdoor and adventure enthusiasts.
The BYD Shark also boasts 31° approach and 17° departure angles, 230 mm of ground clearance, and a 700 mm water-wading depth. The dual-motor AWD system offers selectable terrain modes for mud, sand, and snow, ensuring confident performance across Malaysia’s diverse landscapes.

With a towing capacity of 3,500 kg, the Shark also means business when it comes to utility. Measuring 5,457 mm long, 1,971 mm wide, and 1,925 mm tall, with a 2,920 mm wheelbase, it’s roughly comparable in size to the Ford Ranger Wildtrak, but with a far more advanced powertrain under the skin.
Visually, the Shark stands out with bold, squared-off styling that leans into its tough and modern persona. Highlights include LED headlights with sequential indicators, aluminium roof rails, 18-inch alloy wheels, and fixed side steps. Heated and retractable side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, and a full LED lighting suite add premium touches that elevate it above the average pickup.

Inside, the cabin blends technology and comfort seamlessly. A 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system (compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) takes centre stage, accompanied by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a head-up display.
The Shark also features a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system, 50W wireless charger, ventilated and heated front seats, and an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support.
Dual-zone automatic climate control, soft-touch materials, and a voice-activated assistant round out an interior that feels more premium SUV than pickup.

BYD has also equipped the Shark with a comprehensive suite of safety and driver-assistance features. It includes eight airbags, Level 2 ADAS, and a host of systems such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning and Prevention, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Trailer Stability Control.
For added convenience, the Shark offers a 360° camera system with front and rear sensors, Hill Descent Control, and Intelligent Speed Limit Control — ensuring drivers remain safe and confident whether navigating city streets or rugged terrain.

BYD has not yet announced official Malaysian specifications or pricing, but given the model’s features and hybrid tech, it’s expected to be positioned at a premium level, likely rivalling high-spec variants of the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux. The Shark’s arrival will also mark a milestone for BYD Malaysia, expanding its lineup beyond electric cars like the Dolphin and Seal into new market territory.
With its official launch slated for H2 2026, Malaysians won’t have to wait too long to see whether the Shark will make waves in a segment long ruled by diesel power.
