GWM’s new compact hybrid SUV produces 223PS and 476Nm, with an estimated price below RM115,000 and a claimed driving range exceeding 1,100km.

GWM Malaysia’s upcoming ORA 5 Hi2 HEV has rolled off the production line at EP Manufacturing Bhd (EPMB) in Melaka, marking the start of local assembly ahead of its Malaysian launch this November.

With bookings already open since 5 October 2026, the new compact hybrid SUV is expected to be priced below RM115,000. Final pricing, Malaysian-market specifications and ownership benefits will be announced during its official launch.

The ORA 5 Hi2 HEV combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 223PS and 476Nm of torque. Power is sent through a 2-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), with GWM claiming fuel consumption as low as 4.4 litres per 100km and a total driving range exceeding 1,100km.

As a conventional hybrid, the ORA 5 Hi2 HEV does not require external charging, making it suitable for daily commuting and longer-distance journeys.

GWM says the ORA 5 was designed around the concept of “MORE THAN YOU EXPECT”, combining crossover styling with everyday practicality. Its design has also received international recognition, including the Design of the Year award at the 2025 London Design Awards, making it the first production car to receive the distinction.

The model also won Best Interior Design Award in the Family Car category at TADA 2026. In addition, the ORA 5 HEV secured a Guinness World Records title for the lowest fuel consumption achieved by a hybrid production SUV while driving to all directly administered municipalities in China, recording 3.74 litres per 100km over a 3,004km journey.

The first locally assembled ORA 5 Hi2 HEV fulfils GWM Malaysia’s localisation commitment announced at the Global Automotive and Technology Expo (GATE) 2026. It joins the locally assembled HAVAL H6 HEV and WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV and HEV.

GWM Malaysia has assembled more than 10,000 vehicles locally, while over 1,100 locally assembled WEY G9 units have been exported to Thailand and Indonesia. The ORA 5 Hi2 HEV further expands the company’s manufacturing operations in Malaysia.

Stan Li Hao, Managing Director of Commercial Operations at GWM Malaysia, said the local assembly milestone brings the brand’s latest hybrid technology closer to Malaysian customers.
