Yamaha’s new R-Series flagship gets an 890cc three-cylinder engine, Brembo Stylema brakes, adjustable KYB suspension and MotoGP-inspired winglets.
Yamaha’s new YZF-R9 will arrive in Malaysia in January 2027, with a recommended retail price of RM68,000, excluding insurance and registration fees. The new R-Series flagship will be available exclusively in Icon Blue at authorised Yamaha BLU Universe dealers.
Positioned as a performance-focused supersport motorcycle, the YZF-R9 combines Yamaha’s 890cc inline-three engine with advanced electronics and chassis technology, bringing together racetrack-inspired performance and everyday riding usability.
Power comes from a liquid-cooled, DOHC 890cc three-cylinder engine producing 87.5kW (approximately 119PS) at 10,000rpm and 93Nm of torque at 7,000rpm.

One of the motorcycle’s key highlights is its aluminium Deltabox frame, weighing just 9.7kg. Yamaha describes it as the lightest aluminium frame ever used on one of its supersport models, with a design intended to balance rigidity and flexibility for precise handling.
The YZF-R9 also features an optimised riding position and wider body contact points, allowing riders to move more freely on the motorcycle while maintaining control and comfort at everyday speeds.
Braking is handled by Brembo Stylema monoblock front calipers, designed to deliver consistent braking performance and precise control, particularly during heavy braking and extended use.
Suspension duties are taken care of by a new generation of fully adjustable KYB components, comprising 43mm inverted front forks and a rear shock absorber. The setup is specifically tuned for the YZF-R9, with a focus on responsive damping and improved stability.

Aerodynamics also play a significant role in the R9’s design. MotoGP-inspired winglets, developed through extensive wind tunnel testing, generate downforce to reduce front-end lift and improve stability.
The motorcycle comes equipped with a six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), enabling a range of lean-sensitive electronic rider aids. These include Traction Control, Slide Control, Lift Control and Brake Control.
Yamaha Ride Control allows riders to customise the electronic settings according to their preferences and riding conditions, while Launch Control is included for more efficient acceleration from a standstill, particularly on the racetrack.

The YZF-R9 also supports the Y-TRAC Rev app, which works alongside Y-Connect to provide lap-time measurement, riding data analysis and a virtual pit board. Riders can review previous sessions to track their progress, while team members can send real-time instructions to the motorcycle’s meter display.
The app offers both free and paid plans. The free version comes with limited data storage, with older riding records automatically deleted when the limit is exceeded. The paid plan provides unlimited riding data storage.
A 5-inch full-colour TFT meter rounds off the package, offering four selectable display themes and a dedicated Track mode with lap-time information. The display also provides key riding data such as fuel level, fuel consumption, coolant temperature and gear position, with customisation options available.

With its combination of a high-revving three-cylinder engine, lightweight chassis, premium braking components and advanced electronics, the Yamaha YZF-R9 is set to become a significant addition to Malaysia’s supersport segment when it arrives in January 2027.
