GWM Malaysia has opened bookings for the GWM WEY G9 Hi4 HEV, adding a conventional (self-charging) hybrid option to its premium MPV lineup ahead of the model’s official market launch.

The new hybrid variant joins the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV, which is approaching 2,000 units delivered nationwide. According to official manufacturer sales data, the plug-in hybrid version is Malaysia’s best-selling luxury MPV in its category.

Unlike the PHEV, which offers external charging, the WEY G9 Hi4 HEV is designed for customers who want hybrid efficiency without having to plug in. This gives buyers another option while retaining the premium comfort, performance and safety features associated with the WEY G9.

358 PS and 782 Nm from its Hi4 hybrid system

Powering the GWM WEY G9 Hi4 HEV is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a four-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), two electric motors and a 1.67 kWh hybrid battery.

The system produces a combined output of 358 PS and 782 Nm of torque, with GWM’s Hi4 (Hybrid Intelligent 4WD) technology combining four-wheel-drive capability with the efficiency benefits of hybrid power.

The setup is intended to deliver responsive acceleration and confident performance while maintaining the smooth, refined driving characteristics expected of a premium family MPV.

As a self-charging hybrid, the HEV does not require an external charging connection. Drivers can simply refuel at a petrol station and let the hybrid system manage the use of its petrol engine and electric motors according to driving conditions.

This could make the HEV particularly appealing to buyers who regularly travel long distances or live in homes without convenient access to EV charging facilities.

First-class comfort remains a key focus

Beyond the powertrain, the WEY G9 Hi4 HEV carries forward the premium cabin experience that underpins the model’s positioning in Malaysia.

Features highlighted by GWM include Nappa leather seating, active noise cancellation and a premium sound system, alongside intelligent driver assistance technologies and comprehensive safety protection.

Its spacious three-row cabin is designed to accommodate families and passengers in comfort, with GWM continuing to promote the WEY G9 under its “First Class for All” philosophy.

The combination of cabin refinement, passenger space and hybrid performance positions the MPV as an option for buyers seeking a more luxurious alternative for family travel and executive transportation.

HEV or PHEV: buyers get more choice

According to GWM Malaysia, introducing the HEV alongside the existing PHEV allows customers to select a powertrain that better suits their driving habits and lifestyle.

“The success of the GWM WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV reflects the confidence Malaysian customers have placed in our premium MPV. With the introduction of the HEV, we are building on that success by offering another way to experience First Class,” said Stan Li Hao, Managing Director, Commercial Operations, GWM Malaysia.

He added that the new variant combines hybrid performance, efficiency and convenience with the comfort and safety expected from the WEY brand.

Roslan Abdullah, Chief Operating Officer of GWM Malaysia, said the two powertrain options are intended to address different customer requirements.

Customers who want the flexibility of external charging can consider the PHEV, while those who prefer a hybrid without the need for a charging routine now have the HEV as an alternative.

The launch also supports GWM Malaysia’s broader strategy of expanding its local lineup across fully electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and internal combustion engine (ICE) models.

Bookings for the GWM WEY G9 Hi4 HEV are now open through authorised GWM dealerships nationwide. Pricing and full specifications will be announced closer to its official market launch.
