Honda Malaysia has started production of the New City Hatchback at its Melaka manufacturing plant, paving the way for the refreshed compact hatchback to reach Malaysian showrooms.
The production rollout marks the latest step in Honda Malaysia’s local manufacturing operations, with the ceremony attended by His Excellency SHIKATA Noriyuki, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Malaysia.
The New City Hatchback follows the recent launch of the New City Sedan, strengthening Honda’s City lineup in Malaysia with updated styling, enhanced connectivity and additional technology.
Since its introduction locally in 2021, the City Hatchback has recorded more than 51,000 units in cumulative sales, making it an important model for Honda Malaysia.
The refreshed hatchback retains Honda’s signature ULTRA Seats, allowing multiple seating and cargo configurations for greater practicality. It is positioned as a compact model aimed at buyers looking for a combination of style, flexibility and everyday usability.
Honda Malaysia said the production rollout also highlights its continued investment in local manufacturing. The company began manufacturing vehicles in Malaysia in 2003 and has since worked with approximately 500 local suppliers.
The company’s operations, dealership network and supplier partners collectively support nearly 20,000 associates nationwide, contributing to the development of local automotive capabilities and employment.
Honda Malaysia Managing Director and CEO Narushi Yazaki said the rollout reflects the company’s focus on manufacturing excellence, innovation and sustainable growth, while continuing to deliver products suited to the needs of Malaysian customers.
Meanwhile, Ambassador SHIKATA Noriyuki highlighted Honda Malaysia’s combination of Japanese technology and manufacturing expertise with Malaysian talent, suppliers and industrial capabilities.
With production now underway, the New Honda City Hatchback is set to return to the Malaysian market with its refreshed design, upgraded connectivity and technology package, while retaining the practical ULTRA Seats that have become a key feature of the model.
