Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has opened pre-bookings for the new CLA 200 AMG Line, with the locally assembled hybrid sedan expected to arrive soon as a petrol-powered alternative to the recently launched electric CLA.
The all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA is set to offer Malaysian buyers a choice of powertrains, with the CLA 200 AMG Line joining the fully electric CLA that arrived in Malaysia in August.
Mercedes-Benz Malaysia previewed the new CLA 200 AMG Line in Singapore earlier this month and has confirmed that the model will be locally assembled (CKD) at its Pekan, Pahang plant.
While an official launch date has yet to be announced, pre-bookings are already open and Mercedes-Benz Malaysia estimates the CLA 200 AMG Line to start from RM275,000 in Peninsular Malaysia.
That puts it almost directly alongside the RM274,888 CLA 250+ electric AMG Line, giving buyers a choice between a fully electric drivetrain and a petrol-electric setup at virtually the same starting price.
48V hybrid powertrain instead of a full EV
The CLA 200 uses Mercedes-Benz’s new-generation electrified 8G-eDCT eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, with the electric motor integrated directly into the transmission.
Power comes from a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 163 PS and 250 Nm, supported by a 48V electrical system. Combined system output is reported at around 184 PS and 330 Nm. The system uses a compact lithium-ion battery with up to 1.3 kWh of energy capacity.
Unlike a conventional mild-hybrid system that mainly assists the engine, the CLA 200 can drive on electric power alone under certain conditions. At urban speeds and when power demand is below 22 kW, the car can operate using electric drive.
It can also coast with the combustion engine disconnected at speeds of up to around 100 km/h, while regenerative braking can recover energy through all eight gears, with up to 25 kW of recuperation. Mercedes-Benz claims fuel consumption of around 5.0 litres/100 km or below, making the CLA 200 one of the most efficient combustion-engined Mercedes-Benz models in its segment.
Looks almost identical to the electric CLA
Visually, there is little to separate the CLA 200 from its fully electric sibling. The Malaysian-spec CLA 200 AMG Line will come with 19-inch AMG five-twin-spoke alloy wheels, MULTIBEAM LED headlights, panoramic roof and the illuminated Mercedes-Benz radiator grille.
The grille is one of the more obvious differences between the two powertrains, with the CLA 200 retaining a traditional radiator grille incorporating the Mercedes-Benz star and chrome-pattern elements. The exterior will be offered in five colours: Cosmic Black, Polar White, High-Tech Silver, Sheer Blue and Aqua Mint.
The same high-tech cabin as the electric CLA
Inside, Mercedes-Benz is carrying over much of the technology introduced with the new electric CLA. The CLA 200 gets the company’s MB.OS operating system and fourth-generation MBUX, together with the large MBUX Superscreen stretching across the dashboard.
The display setup comprises a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 14-inch central touchscreen and 14-inch passenger display. The system also incorporates AI-based functions from Microsoft and Google, while navigation is based around Google Maps technology and Mercedes-Benz’s latest connected services.
Other highlights include the MBUX Virtual Assistant, augmented-reality navigation, over-the-air software updates and a range of connected functions designed to keep the car’s software current throughout its ownership. The AMG Line interior gets sports seats trimmed in ARTICO leatherette and MICROCUT microfibre, carbon-grain aluminium trim and a Nappa leather multifunction sports steering wheel.
Advanced driver assistance
The CLA 200 AMG Line also comes with Mercedes-Benz’s latest suite of driver assistance and parking technologies. These include Distance Assist DISTRONIC, emergency braking and steering assistance, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, traffic-sign recognition and emergency stop assistance.
The MB.DRIVE package also brings enhanced parking assistance, including a 360-degree camera system.
When will the CLA 200 officially launch in Malaysia?
This is now the key question. Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has confirmed the CKD programme and opened pre-bookings, but has not announced a specific official launch or customer-delivery date.
The first units are expected to be imported before local assembly begins, according to reports from the Malaysian preview, with full CKD production planned at Pekan.
For buyers considering the new CLA, the timing is particularly interesting because the petrol-electric CLA 200 and fully electric CLA are positioned at almost exactly the same price.
The CLA 200 AMG Line is estimated at RM275,000, while the fully electric CLA 250+ AMG Line is currently priced at RM274,888 in Malaysia.
Mercedes-Benz Malaysia is also offering its Agility+ financing programme for the CLA 200 AMG Line, with estimated monthly payments starting from RM2,888.
With bookings already open, the next major update to watch for is the official Malaysian launch, final pricing and confirmation of when locally assembled CLA 200 units will reach Mercedes-Benz Autohauses.
