MG Motor Malaysia has officially launched the locally assembled (CKD) MGS5 EV, marking a significant step in the brand’s localisation strategy following the model’s first line-off at its Melaka plant earlier this year.

The introduction of the CKD MGS5 EV underscores MG’s long-term commitment to the Malaysian market, while simultaneously expanding its growing electric vehicle portfolio.

Built on MG’s dedicated rear-wheel-drive EV architecture, the MGS5 EV blends practicality with engaging performance. Compared to the earlier fully imported (CBU) version, the locally assembled model benefits from a power upgrade, now producing 151 kW and 350 Nm of torque, translating to improved acceleration and responsiveness.

Charging capability is equally competitive, with support for DC fast charging of up to 150 kW. Under optimal conditions, the battery can be replenished from 10 to 80 per cent in just 26 minutes.

The ultra-thin, horizontally mounted battery pack not only optimises cabin space but also lowers the centre of gravity, contributing to enhanced driving dynamics. The EV delivers a claimed range of up to 446 km (WLTP), making it suitable for both urban commutes and longer-distance travel.

At the top of the range, the MGS5 EV Lux Long Range variant adds a layer of premium comfort. Highlights include leatherette upholstery, ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, and a hands-free powered tailgate.

Safety remains a strong focus, with the MGS5 EV equipped with seven airbags and MG’s ADAS 2.5 suite. This includes driver assistance features such as Traffic Jam Assist and Intelligent Cruise Control. The model has also secured five-star safety ratings from both Euro NCAP and ASEAN NCAP.

For added peace of mind, the MGS5 EV comes with an eight-year or 180,000 km warranty for the battery pack, alongside an eight-year or 160,000 km warranty for the motor control unit.

According to Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia, the launch represents a key milestone for the brand.

“The official launch of the locally assembled MGS5 EV marks an important milestone for MG in Malaysia. It reflects our continued commitment to localisation, innovation and delivering electric vehicles that combine performance, technology and practicality for Malaysian customers,” he said.

The MGS5 EV is assembled locally at the Pegoh facility in Melaka through a partnership with EP Manufacturing Berhad. The plant is capable of producing BEVs, HEVs, and ICE vehicles, supporting MG’s regional ambitions while contributing to local supply chain development and technology transfer.

Production capacity for the MGS5 EV is estimated at 120 to 180 units per month, translating to an annual output of around 1,500 to 2,000 units in 2026.

Bookings are now open, with pricing for the MGS5 EV Lux Long Range starting from RM116,900. To sweeten the deal, MG Motor Malaysia is offering a launch promotion package worth up to RM9,000, subject to terms and conditions.

Customers can also experience the new EV firsthand at a nationwide test drive event taking place this weekend across all MG showrooms.
