MGS5 EV CKD

SAIC Motor Malaysia has reached a major milestone with the first locally assembled MGS5 EV rolling off the production line, marking the official start of MG vehicle assembly in Malaysia.

The line-off ceremony took place at the PEPS-JV Assembly Facility in Alor Gajah, Melaka, where the first CKD (completely knocked down) unit of the MG S5 EV was produced.

The event was attended by several dignitaries including Ab Rauf Yusoh, along with P. Shanmugam and Azhar Arshad. Also present were senior representatives from SAIC Motor Malaysia and EP Manufacturing Berhad, the company responsible for the local assembly partnership.

The milestone follows SAIC Motor Malaysia’s announcement in October 2025 to establish local assembly operations in collaboration with EP Manufacturing Berhad.

According to Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia, the first line-off of the locally assembled MG S5 EV represents an important step in the brand’s long-term localisation strategy in Malaysia.

By producing vehicles locally, the company aims to strengthen Malaysia’s automotive supply chain, support local vendors and play a role in the development of the country’s electric vehicle ecosystem.

More Power for the CKD Model

Built on MG’s dedicated rear-wheel-drive electric platform, the locally assembled MGS5 EV brings improved performance compared to the earlier imported CBU version.

The CKD model now produces 151 kW of power, up from 125 kW previously, while torque has increased to 350 Nm, resulting in stronger acceleration and improved driving dynamics.

The SUV supports DC fast charging of up to 150 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in around 26 minutes under optimal conditions.

It also features an ultra-thin horizontal battery layout, helping lower the vehicle’s centre of gravity while improving cabin space and overall stability.

Premium Features and Long Driving Range

The MG S5 EV LUX variant adds several comfort-oriented features including leatherette seats, ventilated front seats and a power-adjustable front passenger seat, along with a hands-free power tailgate for greater practicality.

With a driving range of up to 446 km (WLTP), the electric SUV is designed to handle both daily commuting and longer journeys.

Safety remains a key focus for MG. The MGS5 EV is equipped with seven airbags and the brand’s ADAS 2.5 advanced driver assistance system, which includes features such as Traffic Jam Assist and Intelligent Cruise Control.

The model has also received five-star safety ratings from both Euro NCAP and ASEAN NCAP.

To provide peace of mind for EV owners, the MGS5 EV is backed by an 8-year / 180,000 km battery warranty, alongside an 8-year / 160,000 km warranty for the motor control unit.

SAIC Motor Malaysia’s collaboration with EP Manufacturing Berhad is also expected to contribute to the growth of Malaysia’s automotive vendor ecosystem through localisation of components and supply chain partnerships.

The project is seen as a significant addition to Melaka’s industrial sector. According to the state government, the initiative reinforces Melaka’s role as a strategic hub for advanced automotive manufacturing.

The Pegoh assembly facility is capable of producing battery electric vehicles (BEV), hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), and internal combustion engine (ICE) models, supporting MG’s broader regional expansion plans.

Production capacity for the MGS5 EV is projected to reach 120 to 180 units per month, with an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 vehicles expected to be produced in 2026.

Beyond vehicle production, the initiative is expected to support job creation, technology transfer and the development of local automotive expertise.

Bookings Now Open

Bookings for the MGS5 EV opened on 10 March 2026, with an estimated MSRP of RM120,000. Final pricing will be confirmed closer to the vehicle’s official launch in the coming weeks.

To celebrate the start of local production, MG Motor Malaysia is offering an Early Bird promotion worth up to RM10,000, which includes:

  • RM7,000 rebate
  • 7 kW wallbox charger worth RM2,000
  • RM1,000 in charging credits
