Shortly after beginning the registration of interest for the iX electric SUV, BMW Group Malaysia has started doing the same for another highly anticipated model which could be launched at the same time – the 2021 BMW 5 Series facelift.
Those of you who follow BMW Malaysia on Facebook and Instagram would’ve noticed posts paying tribute to all the 5 Series models from the past, followed by a link for those who want to get their hands on the new 5 Series to register their interest.
Only M Sport
After paying a visit to the BMW Shop, we noticed that two variants are listed – the 530e M Sport, and the 530i M Sport. Unfortunately, there is no Luxury Line variant for now.
On the exterior, the 5-Series looks significantly sportier and more youthful than the pre-facelift model which we have on our roads now. Up front, the lights, the kidney grille, as well as the bumper have all been redesigned, looking a lot like the 3-Series.
Besides that, the 3D-ish LED taillights, the rear bumper, the trapezoidal twin exhaust tips, red M Sport brake calipers, as well as the wheel design (18-20 inches) are all new as far as the car’s exterior is concerned.
Moving in, new in the 5 Series are the repositioned multifunction controls on the steering wheel, the extended automatic climate control system, the gloss black centre console buttons, redesigned seats, new upholstery choices, the latest iDrive Operating System 7.0 with updated interface, as well as the BMW Maps system, which is basically a new cloud-based navigation system that gives more accurate real-time information.
New mild-hybrid system
Another big news is that a mild-hybrid system comprising a 48V starter-generator, will be rolled out in all models with a four- or six-cylinder engine, adding 11 PS to the total output figures. However, whether the new starter generator will be offered here remains unknown as no technical details have been revealed yet for our market.
Even if the existing powertrain package of the 530e gets carried over, it still packs a lot of punch – delivering 252 PS and 420 Nm of torque, enabling the car to sprint from naught to 100 km/h in about 6 seconds.
But if the new mild hybrid system with XtraBoost function makes its debut, expect the 530e M Sport to kick out a maximum of 292 PS and 420 Nm, which makes the sedan even more potent than it is now.
Price wise, the 5 Series is expected to be priced similar to what we have now – between RM338,800 for the 530e M Sport and RM382,800 for the 530i M Sport (Recommended Retail Price with Extended Warranty & Service Package, without SST exemption).
The BMW Group Annual Conference was just concluded a couple of days ago, and the main highlight of the event was certainly the unveiling of the upcoming BMW i4.
The BMW i4 is a fully electric 4 door Gran Coupé and will enter the market during the course of 2021, including a BMW M Performance model. BMW claims that the i4’s refined balance of BMW typical sportiness; comfort and sustainable performance are unique in its segment.
The BMW i4 model line will be available in different versions covering ranges of up to 590km (WLTP) and up to 482 km (EPA). With a power output of up to 530hp, the BMW i4 can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in around 4 seconds.
Further complementing the powertrain is a model-specific damper technology that reduces the dipping movements of the body at the moment of set-off, while the actuator-related wheel slip limitation (ARB) developed by BMW guarantees optimum traction and perfect straight-line stability at all times – even on slippery road surfaces.
Other key features include its spontaneous reactions to every movement – not just of the accelerator pedal but also of the steering and the brake pedal. The prerequisites for this high level of agility and precision are anchored in the underlying vehicle concept of the BMW i4.
This includes the car’s long wheelbase, wide track widths, model-specific camber values, large wheels, as well as the high torsional rigidity and the vehicle’s low centre of gravity and weight balance.
Just as sharp
In addition to its neutral self-steering behaviour and its powerful, precisely controllable brakes, the steering in the BMW i4 responds directly and with a high degree of accuracy, offering the driver precise feedback at all times while remaining entirely independent of drive forces, even during intensive acceleration or deceleration.
Lane changes at high speeds are mastered with ease, while relaxed driving over long distances is ensured by the speed-related Servotronic power steering and the fact that the vehicle is largely insusceptible to any disruption caused by road bumps.
Fitted with a high-voltage storage system featuring the latest battery cell technology that enables a range of up to 600 kilometres (WLTP), the chassis technology of the BMW i4 is designed for long-distance comfort, too. It is based on the high-quality damper technology, supplemented with model-specific components and separately tuned.
Just as fun
“With its sporty looks, best in class driving dynamics and zero local emissions, the BMW i4 is a true BMW. It makes the heart of the BMW brand now beat fully electric,” said Pieter Nota, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Customer, Brands, Sales.
“For the first time, we’ve developed a BMW with sporty DNA for purely electric driving entirely from scratch,” explains project manager David Alfredo Ferrufino Camacho.
The folks at Munich also said that the biggest challenge during the development phase of the i4 was integrating the application of all drive and suspension components, ensuring that the spontaneous power delivery of the electric motor is combined with precisely controllable handling in every situation, optimised traction in all weather and road conditions, and perfectly balanced ride comfort.
That being said, more details about the BMW i4 will be revealed in the near future, so watch this space for more news from Munich.
Those of you who are following BMW Malaysia’s official Facebook page would’ve noticed that registration of interest for the all-new BMW iX has started, meaning that the model is indeed coming to Malaysia, sooner than many of us thought.
On the exterior, the iX is about the same size as the current X5, stands as tall as the X6, and features the same wheel dimensions as the X7. At the centre of the front end stands the new controversial kidney grille.
Since the electric drive system of the BMW iX requires only a small amount of cooling air, the kidney grille is completely blanked off. Its role has duly turned digital and here it functions as an intelligence panel. Camera technology, radar functions and other sensors are integrated seamlessly into the grille behind a transparent surface.
The door openers are flush, the filler neck for the windscreen washer fluid is concealed under the BMW logo on the bonnet and the rear-view camera has been integrated into the BMW logo on the tailgate.
Inside, the cabin is designed to be as minimalist as possible, with an exceptionally large panoramic glass roof, no centre tunnel, and a centre console crafted to look like a piece of furniture. The displays and controls are all stripped down to the essentials. The model will also feature the latest version of the BMW iDrive system.
Powered by the fifth generation BMW eDrive technology that comprises two electric motors, the iX is capable of kicking out 500 hp and accelerating from naught to 100 in under 5.0 seconds.
The powertrain also enables the BMW iX to record a range of over 600 kilometres in the WLTP cycle. The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent of its full capacity in under 40 minutes using DC fast charging at up to 200 kW.
Added to which, within ten minutes enough energy can be fed into the battery to increase the car’s range by more than 120 kilometres. It takes less than eleven hours to charge the high-voltage battery from 0 to 100 per cent at 11 kW from a Wallbox.
The BMW iX, which will be produced at BMW’s Plant in Dingolfing as the BMW Group’s new technology flagship, will bring together the company’s latest developments in the strategic innovation fields of Design, Automated Driving, Connectivity, Electrification and Services.
The folks at BMW claim that they are setting new industry standards with the technology in the BMW iX, with things like the high computing power for data processing, more powerful sensor technology than the current line-up, 5G-connectivity, as well as new and improved automated driving and parking functions.
That being said, no details on the pricing have been revealed yet, so watch this space for more updates on the BMW iX.
BMW has unveiled a new and improved version of the BMW iDrive system which now takes the interaction between driver and vehicle to another level.
Underpinning the unique user experience is the new BMW Operating System 8, a new generation of displays, controls and software, and extremely powerful connectivity and data processing.
The new iDrive will be rolled out gradually across all vehicle classes, making its debut later this year in the BMW iX before also featuring in the BMW i4.
BMW Curved Display
The most distinctive new addition to the physical components on board is the BMW Curved Display, which groups together the information display and control display.
This curving screen offers a futuristic interpretation of the traditional driver orientation in the cockpit design of BMW models. The BMW Curved Display is angled clearly towards the driver to good ergonomic effect, making the intuitive touch control even more straightforward.
In this new BMW Curved Display, the screen areas of the 12.3-inch information display and 14.9-inch control display merge together into a single unit.
The number of buttons and switches has been reduced by almost half. At the same time, control clusters for relevant and frequently used basic functions are retained where customers expect to find them.
The control panels on the centre console and instrument panel have an all-new, strikingly clear and minimalist design. The familiar iDrive Controller is the central control element on the centre console. The Touch Controller, designed in an extremely smart glass-effect finish for the BMW iX, is encircled by a bezel painted in Gold Bronze.
The new generation of BMW iDrive also brings a new design language for the newly developed BMW Operating System 8. Strong and eye-catching graphics, modern colours, futuristic textures and forms, bright light and the interplay of reflections create an impressive and immersive visual appearance.
At the same time, the user interface has been optimised to present the right amount of information at all times in a simple and easy-to-understand way.
The extensive individualisation options available for the screens in the display area behind the steering wheel can be selected extremely quickly and easily via the function keys on the steering wheel. The two-axis operating system enables user-friendly vertical list navigation with the rotating key, as well as toggling between menus by tilting horizontally.
The driver can switch between three layout types and various different widgets according to personal preference or the driving situation at hand – by thumb control and in just a few operating steps. The three modes are Drive, Gallery, and Focus.
The new generation of BMW iDrive also brings additional skills for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. In order to strengthen the personal connection between the digital companion and the vehicle occupants, users can still give the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant a name of their choice, which they then use as a prompt.
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will also learn new functions and new forms of expression as the ongoing development of BMW iDrive continues. These new features are regularly imported into the vehicle by means of Remote Software Upgrade.
When using the new BMW iDrive, customers benefit from increasing personalisation of the user experience based on the BMW ID. When the BMW ID has been loaded, the driver will receive a personal greeting which will include the customised profile image that can be uploaded in the My BMW App.
Once the driver moves to within one-and-a-half metres, the vehicle unlocks no matter whether they are carrying their UWB key or a smartphone with BMW Digital Key Plus.
The new BMW iDrive system will be launched with these Efficient, Sport and Personal Modes. Further modes will be added as part of the ongoing development of BMW iDrive in the future.
This will also include modes that do not revolve primarily around the driver or the task of driving. Additional functions will be integrated into the modes and the options for configuring functions extended. These enhancements will be imported into vehicles via over-the-air updates.
BMW Operating System 8
With the arrival of the new BMW Operating System 8, the digital services for navigation, parking and charging are fully integrated into the cloud-based BMW Maps system in a user-friendly way. The intelligent functions of BMW Maps are also being expanded further.
That being said, the new-generation BMW iDrive offers new opportunities for seamlessly incorporating customers’ habits and preferences into the operating system. The system’s higher degree of flexibility will additionally make in-car use of third-party apps even simpler and more convenient in future.
The BMW Operating System 8 again also ensures full integration of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the new BMW iDrive will also enable extensive integration of the Alibaba and Tencent services for customers in China.
Alongside the new R18Classic, BMW Motorrad Malaysia also introduced the new BMW S 1000 RR recently.
The latest version of the iconic superbike arrives with a range of new features and a sportier appearance with the BMW M Package – an optional equipment now made standard to the variant.
Available in three attractive exterior offerings – Hockenheim Silver, Blackstorm Metallic, and a combination of Light White, Racing Blue Metallic and Racing Red (BMW Motorrad Motorsport for M Package), the New BMW S1000 RR also features LED technology for both the headlight and taillight, along with new LED turn signals as well.
