Scania Introduces the ‘Scania One’ Digital Platform to Connected Services

Scania today at Mobile World Congress launches Scania One, which provides a single digital environment to a host of connected services for fleet owners and drivers. With one-quarter million connected Scania vehicles, Scania One provides coherent and simple access to efficiency-enhancing services.

Through Scania One, fleet owners and drivers will have access to the most relevant connected services that can simplify and improve their transport assignments. It constitutes an open customer platform for existing and coming Scania services as well as external content in the versatile Android tablet device.

“Scania One is our framework for seamlessly and efficiently integrating both current and coming services in a single environment,” says Christian Levin, Executive Vice President, Head of Sales and Marketing, Scania. “I am convinced that these services, taken together, will significantly contribute towards greater efficiency and thereby higher revenues for transport companies.”

Scania One is based on communications technology-giant Ericsson’s software. It is designed to meet the varying needs of customers and drivers related to the trucking operation, transport assignment or simply personal preference. Since services may be added at will, Scania One offers an attractive single device choice. From the purpose-built tablet launcher, drivers can access all apps that the transport company subscribes to.

Scania One features the Scania Fleet Management, the comprehensive monitoring and analytical system that provides fleet owners with an overview of equipment and drivers. It offers in-depth data on performance trends with regard to crucial factors that directly affect costs, such as fuel consumption and wear. It is also an invaluable tool in fleet planning, providing information on position and needed servicing.

The condensed Fleet Performance app provides an abbreviated version of Scania Fleet Management with the most pertinent information.

In addition, some of the services Scania One initially features include:

Check before drive – provides a digital checklist for guided daily inspections of brand-neutral vehicle and trailer status with time-saving opportunities to continuous record observations as the basis for service planning.

Scania Assistance – allows drivers to digitally contact Scania’s assistance service and transmits position for speedy remedial roadside and workshop action.

Guide me –guides drivers through an interactive tool with augmented reality functionality in acquainting themselves with basic functions. With the mobile device camera, dashboard symbols can be scanned to provide information in text or video.

Scania will continuously add new features while also encouraging developers to add useful services, building a platform for optimised and efficient transport solutions.

Scania One is compatible with the cloud-based platform of Volkswagen Truck & Bus, which also serves as the base for RIO, opening opportunities to offer additional services and a wider ecosystem.

Continental Introduces New 19.5″ Tires for Buses

The requirements placed on urban bus tires are high, with these tires placed under higher stress in the inner-city public transport segment than in any other area of application. Stop/start operation coupled with frequent braking and accelerating, varying road surfaces, and recurring contact with the curb due to pulling up to and away from bus stops demand quite a lot from urban bus tires.

The German premium tire manufacturer, Continental, is helping meet these demands by expanding its range of 19.5-inch tires with the new Conti Urban HA3 245/70 R 19.5 developed for use on medium-sized urban buses. The reinforced side walls of the Conti Urban HA3 provide a specially stiffened tire contour, which can also withstand frequent curbstone contacts at bus stops, which is unavoidable with urban bus services. The rubber compound used for the tread and the tread design increase the mileage of the bus tire by up to 20 percent compared with a standard regional tire. The deep sipes also ensure optimum lane holding even in extremely wet conditions throughout the entire life of the Conti Urban HA3 245/70 R 19.5 tire. The Conti Urban HA3 245/70 R 19.5 combines superb handling and excellent grip, ensuring the comfort and safety of passengers.

The Conti HA3 can be used on all axles, as indicated by the A in the designation HA3. The carcass of the Conti Urban HA3 245/70 R 19.5 can be retreaded thus extending the life of the tire, which has a positive impact on its cost-effectiveness in the fleet. Regrooving indicators to mark the possible regrooving depth are integrated into the tread. The Conti Urban HA3 245/70 R 19.5 is labeled with the M+S symbol, which means that it is suitable for year-round use in many European regions.

Limited Edition Jeep Renegade Desert Hawk Announced

Plans to continue the success of the remarkable Jeep Renegade are announced today with details of a new limited edition Renegade ‘Desert Hawk’ version.

Following in the tyre tracks of the popular Night Eagle and Dawn of Justice versions, the new Desert Hawk will carry on the Jeep Renegade tradition of introducing new and exciting variations as it builds on its reputation in the UK. Designed to enhance Jeep Renegade’s popular and striking design, the new Desert Hawk version takes the Renegade Trailhawk’s rugged appearance and best-in-class capability a step further with exclusive features and functionality inspired by the desert. It will be limited to just 100 examples for the UK when it goes on sale today (23 February).

The Renegade Desert Hawk, like the Trailhawk, delivers best-in-class Trail Rated 4×4 capability with standard Jeep Active Drive Low with 20:1 crawl ratio; Selec-Terrain system which includes a Sand mode and an exclusive Rock mode, 8.7-inch ground clearance, skid plates, 8.1-inch wheel articulation, Hill-descent Control and 19-inch water fording.

The Renegade Desert Hawk comes as standard with a 170 hp 2.0-litre MultiJet diesel engine paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission. It costs from £28,995 OTR for the 2.0 MultiJet II 170hp 4WD.

“Designed to enhance Renegade’s already very strong appeal in the UK, and capable of delivering Jeep’s legendary off-road capability, the new Renegade Desert Hawk version is an attractive proposition for buyers,” says Damien Dally, head of brand, Jeep UK.

“Sporting and agile on-road and rugged and capable off it, this limited edition newcomer fits perfectly into Renegade’s highly successful family.”

Jeep unveiled the new Renegade Desert Hawk by towing one of the UK’s top sandboarders through a series of stunts and tricks on Braunton Burrows sand dune, North Devon.

British board-rider and instructor Alex Bird helped mark today’s launch of the Renegade Desert Hawk by becoming the first participant in his sport to be towed by a car in the UK. In extreme conditions, the Jeep Renegade again displayed its famous off-road capabilities helping Alex to reach speeds of 40mph and negotiate several grind rail stunts, jumps and 90-feet sand banks.

“I’ve never done anything like that before,” says Alex, 34. “It took time to get used to being towed at such speeds but I do a lot of wakeboarding and it was principally very similar. The car performed incredibly well on such deep sand; if it wasn’t so good off-road there is no way I could have got up to 40mph and nailed the jumps and stunts.”

Scania Renews Public Bus Systems in Iran

Scania has signed an agreement in principle with the Iranian province of Isfahan and Shahr-e Atiyeh investment company on the delivery of 1,350 buses for public transport for Isfahan and four other Iranian cities. The first of these new buses will be in operation at the end of 2017.

Two Memoranda of Understanding have been signed in Teheran, in the presence of the Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven and the Swedish Minister for EU Affairs and Trade Ann Linde, by Henrik Henriksson President and CEO of Scania, Hamid Akbari Rad Member of the Board of Scania’s Iranian partner Oghab Afshan, the Governor of Isfahan and the Managing Director of Shahr-e Atiyeh.

There is a clear need to expand and renew public bus systems in Iran. With the two memoranda of understanding, Isfahan, 450 km south of Tehran, and four other leading and far-sighted Iranian cities, will get sustainable public transport solutions. Scania and Oghab Afshan will supply Isfahan with 350 buses and in the frame agreement with Shahr-e Atiyeh, up to 1,000 buses will be financed.

Air pollution in Iranian cities has steadily increased in recent years, claiming lives and affecting quality of life, but also hampering economic activity. In cooperation with Iranian authorities, Scania has developed solutions that ensure that local emissions are kept to a minimum with the current fuel quality. The new buses to Isfahan and Mashhad are equipped with engine technology that offers the lowest emissions levels in the country.

Iran is one of Scania’s top ten bus markets globally. Privately owned Oghab Afshan has been Scania’s bus partner and distributor in Iran since 2000. The company employs close to 1,100 persons in its Scania operations, including 860 in the bus factory.

“Together with our partners, we have a strong presence in Iran with comprehensive industrial operations and an extensive service network,” says Scania’s President and CEO Henrik Henriksson. We look forward to developing this market even further to provide the best services and sustainable transport solutions to our customers.”

Iran continues to be an important market for Scania. Its two established and privately owned distributors Oghab Afsahan and for trucks, Mammut Diesel, have a solid presence in the country to service customers.

MAN to Offer Consultancy Services

MAN Truck & Bus is expanding its range of services to include comprehensive consultancy for fleet and transport solutions with alternative drives right through to zero-emission solutions.

As they navigate the path from ‘low emission’ to ‘no emission’, transport companies and fleet operators face a range of challenges that go beyond the vehicle itself. To provide them with the best possible support with this, MAN Truck & Bus is creating a specialised team of consultants for personalised transport solutions offering maximum cost efficiency. In addition to the vehicle itself, this will cover issues relating to infrastructure and energy demand, as well as maintenance concepts and the fleet design.

“Each customer can select whichever components of our range of services they need, as we provide personalised advice and consultancy. For example, we can use our simulation tools to assist them with route planning or with depot design and layout,” explained Stefan Sahlmann, who is heading up the consultancy team at MAN Truck & Bus. The service portfolio covers the complete use of the vehicles – both trucks and buses – ranging from operation and infrastructure to servicing and maintenance.

Renault to Showcase Full Range of CNG Vehicles in Paris

Renault Trucks will be present at the International Transport and Logistics Week trade show (SITL) which will be held at the Porte de Versailles exhibition centre in Paris from March 14 to 16, 2017. The company will be showcasing its offer in natural gas vehicles on the stand of the French Natural Gas Vehicles Association AFGNV. These are vehicles which produce virtually no particulate matter, emit no smoke and are odour-free.

Renault Trucks will be showcasing its CNG offer at the International Transport and Logistics Week trade show (SITL) held at the Porte de Versailles exhibition centre in Paris from March 14 to 16, 2017. A 19-tonne D Wide CNG with horizontal exhaust – painted in the colours of the transport company STAF – will be on display on the stand of the French Natural Gas Vehicles Association AFGNV, Hall 1, aisle L, stand 88. This vehicle is fitted with a new generation Euro 6 Step C-compliant 8.9-litre engine with horizontal exhaust. The 6×2 rigid truck version boasts a rear steering axle offering fantastic manoeuvrability, making it ideal for deliveries in an urban environment.

Renault Trucks knows that the greatest need for diverse energies is in built-up areas. In response, it has added a horizontal exhaust model to its natural gas powered range. CNG has the advantage of being a relatively clean energy producing no methane vapours and is a tried-and-tested technology. The engine emits virtually no particulate matter, smoke or odours without using AdBlue®. Moreover, its driving range on urban journeys is on a par with that offered by its diesel counterpart.

The Renault Trucks D Wide CNG is designed to run on both natural gas and biomethane (biogas). Biomethane is a renewable energy sourced from organic matter which cuts CO2 emissions by as much as 70% compared to a diesel vehicle. Natural gas or biomethane fuelled trucks offer a dual advantage: they are perfectly suited for urban and suburban deliveries and use in municipal utility fleets while being authorised in low emission zones.

The Renault Trucks D Wide CNG can be fitted with either a vertical or horizontal exhaust according to requirements. It comes in two versions: a 19-tonne 4×2 rigid truck and a 26-tonne 6×2 rigid truck. Its Euro 6 compliant NGT9 6-cylinder engine displaces 8.9 litres and delivers a power output of 320 hp. Its automatic gearbox is perfectly adapted to the torque of a CNG engine. The Renault Trucks network is equipped to perform servicing and maintenance operations on these vehicles anywhere in Europe.

Why cant we buy a 2×4 pickup truck with auto transmission?

We have done our research and realized that in Malaysia you cannot buy a 2-wheel drive double cab pickup truck with an automatic gearbox from an established brand. A quick look at the 7 biggest pickup truck brands in Malaysia, Toyota, Isuzu, Ford, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Chevrolet and Nissan will reveal a wide range of offerings but there is NO 2-wheel drive, double cab, automatic driven pickup truck for sale.

You can however buy one in Thailand and Indonesia, but not in Malaysia. WHY?

Screen Shot 2017-01-26 at 1.55.55 PM

With the prices of pickup trucks being very favorable for the car buyer in relation to much lower import taxes, it makes good sense to buy a pickup truck, but the Malaysian family or even the average lifestyle truck buyer does not need the weighty and expensive 4×4 system that comes with the pickup truck.

Screen Shot 2017-01-26 at 1.47.13 PM

Also with the family buyer who uses the truck in the city, having an automatic gearbox would be great.

So what do we need to do to get a new pickup truck with an automatic gearbox, double cab for the family to get comfortable and an automatic gearbox for inner city commuting in comfort?
