Volvo recently announced an order of 373 city buses for Dubai with the first deliveries in Q3, 2019. The Abu Dhabi Department of Transport has now ordered 168 premium intercity Volvo coaches from its operators. With the latest order, the Volvo fleet in the United Arab Emirates will amount to almost 800 vehicles, operating in all three segments in the UAE – City, Intercity and Premium Coach.
The chassis are Volvo B11R Euro VI, and the first Euro VI buses ever to be purchased by Abu Dhabi Department of Transport. The buses will be bodied with the Castrosua Magnus E. Deliveries are planned for Q4 2019 to Q4 2020.
Besides the vehicles, the contract with the operators includes a comprehensive maintenance contract. The tender was awarded to the operator presenting a combination of superior vehicle specifications combined with low operating cost. The unique value proposition offered by Volvo helped the operator remain competitive and make a winning bid.

The Volvo B11R is designed to meet high demands on driving properties, comfort and safety. The standard equipment includes features such as Volvo’s electronically controlled disc brakes and ESP (Electronic Stability Program).
Passengers will experience premium interiors including ergonomic seats, USB charging in seats and heat repellent windows. The buses will come equipped with a high level of Intelligent Transport systems (ITS) for fleet tracking, and driver support.

This latest version was fully unveiled to the public at a design seminar in Hangzhou this week and will be equipped with an updated version of the GKUI.
A week prior, at the launch of the GKUI19 Geely Smart Ecosystem and China’s first independently developed dedicated vehicle chipset, the E01, the Bo Yue PRO was announced to be Geely’s first model to receive the new hardware. The addition of the GKUI19 and E01 chipset has essentially put a “super brain” into the Bo Yue SUV. To match its enhanced intelligence, comprehensive improvements to the original Bo Yue SUV have been made including power and design.
The intelligence upgrade has put the Bo Yue PRO one step closer towards being a true mobile terminal envisioned in Geely’s mobility ecosystem, in which vehicles become a third living space for its passengers rather than just a mere tool of transportation. With the GKUI19 empowered by its dedicated E01 chipset, the Bo Yue PRO transforms into a mobile entertainment system, a control hub for smart devices at home or in the office, a mobile phone, and a mobility service provider.

The Bo Yue PRO comes with either a 1.8TD turbo direct injection engine matched to a 7 speed wet dual clutch transmission or a 1.5TD turbo direct injection engine matched to an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission. Both powertrain combinations meet the stringent China National 6B emission standards. The 1.8TD has been recalibrated from the previous version used in the original Bo Yue to offer a maximum power of 135kW and max torque of 300 N•m, an increase of 15 N•m. The 7DCT transmission has an efficiency of 97%, helping reduce fuel consumption by 1L per 100km over the original Bo Yue. The 1.5TD engine was jointly developed by Geely and Volvo, offering a maximum power of 130kW and max torque of 255 N•m. The Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission is widely used in high-end models featuring fast shift response and reduced fuel consumption.
The Bo Yue PRO upgrade in technology is matched with a more mature design combining modern Chinese aesthetics with a technology orientated approach. The Bo Yue Pro’s front fascia was given a more aggressive look with a raised hood and a more pronounced grill. Geely’s iconic Expanding Cosmos grille has grown larger, more pronounced, and impactful. The Expanding Cosmos grille is flanked by accentuated deep-set intelligent LED headlamps. The signature “Leaping Cat” design influence seen in the original Bo Yue stance and proportion now holds its head higher, prouder, more confident. Deep functioning air intakes stretches across the exaggerated horizontal width, enhancing the SUV aerodynamic performance.
From the rear quarter, the Bo Yue PRO’s design clean and logical featuring Geely’s distinctive chrome strip that stretches towards the outer edges into the rear lamps. The three-dimensional Chinese fan inspired twisting rear lamps perfectly represent the combination of technology and culture.
After listening to consumer feedback from across our global markets, Geely has moved to lower the load height of the rear tailgate, giving more space to users and allowing for easier loading and unloading of personal items.
The interior of the Bo Yue PRO has been made more spacious with a harmonious and elegant design. Air vents stretch from both sides of the instrument panel and push into the doors, enhancing the perceived transverse space. Fluid interlacing layers fold and twist to help enhance visual depth throughout the cabin. The most eye-catching feature is the two HD central infotainment panel and full LCD instrument panel which seamlessly integrate into the high tech dashboard with ambient lighting that emulate wood grain textures.
The new Bo Yue PRO is a comprehensive upgrade in terms of design, intelligence, and power, opening the door to the 5G “Internet of Everything” era. Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (Digi) announced its partnership with Bus Asia (BA) at the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak 2019 (IDECS 2019), in line with Sarawak’s goal of improving mobility and user experience in transport service.
The partnership comes at a time when the state government announces plans for a future smart city in Sarawak. One of its strategies include the establishment of more comfortable and safer mobility solutions for commuters using smart technologies. This includes the integration of intelligent route selection, digital asset management, and smart buses into the transportation system in Sarawak.
As Digi’s iFleet can provide real-time information and alerts on fleet movement, it will enable total fleet visibility translating to better route planning and improved customer experience. The fleet management system also monitors driving behaviour, ensuring the safety of passengers onboard.

Volvo Trucks is introducing new functions that help drivers save fuel even when cruise control is not activated. The launch of upgraded D13 diesel engines for Euro 3, Euro 4, Euro 5 and EEV markets, together with the new software, enables fuel savings of up to 3%.
The new function is called Volvo Torque Assist and is intended to reduce fuel consumption by providing more efficient driving when the cruise control is disabled in long haul operations.
“We have seen that there is a need to help drivers save fuel also when the cruise control cannot be used. I-Cruise, our intelligent cruise control, is still the best way to optimize fuel consumption, but sometimes it might not be applicable. In this way we can support the driver to cut fuel costs in such driving situations,” says Peter Hardin, Director Product Management at Volvo Trucks.
Volvo Torque Assist is designed to give more fuel-efficient driving by automatically adapting the truck’s torque and acceleration to the road topography, the load and speed changes. The function is only active when driving without using cruise control.
Another supporting function keeps the amount of injected fuel constant after the engine’s ‘green range’ has been passed. The slightly compromised performance is compensated by improved fuel economy.
The pedal map has also been recalibrated. A less sensitive pedal creates a smoother torque development, which, in turn, makes the truck easier to control.
“Drivers that are less skilled in economical driving benefit more than those who already have that driving style,” explains Peter Hardin. “The new software also gives a more significant result with heavy loads, many slope changes or large speed variations, while drivers transporting lighter loads with constant speed on flat roads will save less fuel. In field tests we have actually seen examples of a larger potential for savings, than the 3%.”
The hardware upgrades in the Euro 6 Step D versions of the D13 engine, released earlier in 2019, are also being used to raise the standards of the Euro 3 to 5 engines. Internal friction has been reduced with new cylinder liners and new V-shaped oil scraper rings. The turbo efficiency has been improved and the engine management system is upgraded to a newer version with better capacity.
In all, these hardware upgrades save around 1% fuel, while the fuel saving potential for the new software depends on driver experience and the operating conditions.
“We are particularly pleased with the order from Madrid. It clearly shows that our Citaro NGT is proving its worth,” explains Till Oberwörder, Head of Daimler Buses. EMT placed its first order two years ago for 82 urban buses of the newly launched Citaro NGT model. The following year, the company ordered another 314 buses. The current order means that there will be a total of 672 environmentally friendly Citaro NGT buses operating in Madrid from 2020.
The vehicles now on order are two-door solo buses which are 12 metres in length. They are powered by the state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz OM 936 G natural gas engine. It undercuts the Euro VI emissions limit by a significant margin in some situations. Its output and maximum torque of 1200 Nm enable the engine to achieve the same powerful performance as a diesel engine.
The Citaro NGT’s exemplary environmental record
The environmental performance of the Citaro NGT (Natural Gas Technology) is exemplary. In natural gas operation, CO2 emissions are up to ten per cent below those of a diesel engine. And when using biogas, an NGT bus is almost completely CO2-neutral. What’s more, noise emissions are also up to 4 dB(A) lower. This corresponds to roughly half the subjectively perceived noise level. As a result, the Citaro NGT is ideally suited for use in busy cities and metropolitan areas where noise pollution is a problem.
Specific equipment: functional yet comfortable
The Citaro NGT buses destined for EMT (Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid) feature a very specific equipment range. In terms of appearance, the rear end is closed, with the usual large rear window omitted. Passengers enter the bus at the front via an inward folding door and in the middle via an electrically powered swivelling-sliding door. Both a cassette ramp and a folding ramp are provided for wheelchair users. Inside, the handrails retain their prominent yellow colour. Passengers sit on sculpted seats and will find five double USB sockets available for charging their portable devices.
Eight hinged windows and an enhanced passenger compartment air-conditioning system allow the Citaro NGT to cope with the hot conditions during the Madrid summer. The driver’s cab has its own separate air conditioning. The driver sits behind a protective door with a partition window covering the full width of the door. Another window above the front-end sill then closes off the driver’s cab completely. The driver keeps an eye on what is happening on board via video cameras.
EMT: facts and figures about Spain’s biggest urban bus operator
As Spain’s biggest urban bus operator, EMT employs over 9000 staff, including 6000 bus drivers. The fleet comprises 2000 buses. They operate on 209 routes with over 10,000 bus stops, covering around 90 million kilometres and moving 430 million passengers a year. With this new order, EMT is approaching its target of moving its complete fleet to low-emission and locally emission-free urban buses by the year 2020.
