Volvo Trucks Malaysia recently hosted a vehicle handover ceremony for its long-time customer – Kotamas Oil Sdn Bhd.
The official handover of 15 units of Volvo FMX 440 6×4 prime movers was held at Volvo Truck’s private dealer, Dai Lieng Machinery Sdn Bhd in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The ceremony was attended by the senior management team members of Dai Lieng, Kotamas as well as the Managing Director of Volvo Trucks Malaysia.
Kotamas is a specialist in petroleum haulage in Sabah, servicing clientele such as Petronas and Shell. A strong business partner of Volvo Trucks in East Malaysia, Kotamas already owns and operates 12 Volvo trucks in their business. Kotamas now owns a total of 27 Volvo trucks.
Rusman Bin Japalus, Managing Director of Kotamas Oil Sdn Bhd said, “As one of the largest fleet operator in the state of Sabah, we needed trucks that are capable of withstanding the rough conditions that our drivers work in, both in terms of terrain which is hilly and bumpy as well as unpredictable wet weather. We needed trucks that were not just dependable, but also safe for our drivers given the working conditions.
Volvo Trucks is the company that provide trucks which are able to fulfill all the safety requirements outlined by the reputable oil and gas companies we work with. So having partnered with Volvo since 2014, we are confident that once again, they will be able to provide us with the solutions we need.
This handover marks the first time that a company is receiving the custom made FMX 440 with Tandem Axle Lift in Malaysia. Volvo Trucks is also the only commercial vehicles manufacturer to offer this variant for prime movers in the country. One of the challenges faced by Kotamas was the hilly and rough terrain their trucks needed to go through, which demanded increased traction from the vehicle and often resulted in additional costs spent on tyres.
After reviewing Kotamas needs, Volvo Trucks Malaysia recommended these tailor-made prime movers that leverages on Volvo’s Tandem Axle Lift technology. Tandem Axle Lift is designed for operations where the driver drives heavily loaded in one direction and empty in the other. With the push of a button on the dashboard, the driver can disengage and raise the drive axle to improve fuel efficiency by up to
4% on average.
As soon as the truck is loaded, the drive axle automatically lowers and engages to ensure maximum traction and driveability. This system allows for extra grip on hilly terrains, providing better traction, tighter turning circles and improves overall fuel efficiency. It also reduces the money spent on replacing tyres worn out by travelling on rough terrain, thereby maximising the uptime of the truck and at the same time, reducing overall operational costs.
“The technology that goes into the Tandem Axle Lift is truly remarkable and is a perfect fit for customers that need a prime mover which regularly travels on rough terrain. This is especially true for customers based in East Malaysia where roads are riddled with pot holes and sometimes not tarred, uneven and hilly,” said Peden.
“This handover is truly a momentous occasion for us at Volvo Trucks Malaysia as it marks the first ever handover of the FMX 440 with Tandem Axle Lift in the country. One of our objectives here at Volvo Trucks Malaysia is to maximise the uptime of our customers and reduce costs through our offerings. I am certain that with this handover, Kotamas will be able to face their geographical challenges and further
increase the profitability of their company.”
It is Volvo Trucks’ mission to provide quality, both in terms of products and service. With that in mind, Volvo hopes to continue fostering the close relationship they have with Kotamas in the future, by providing innovative solutions and support to maximise the uptime of their trucks and ensure productivity.

PROTON gave the Proton X70, its first ever SUV, its public debut during the media day of the 2018 Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show (KLIMS). Held at the Malaysian International Trade & Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur the show officially opens its doors to the public from 23 November to 2 December and all visitors are invited to get a closer look at the Proton X70 when visiting the Company’s booth.
Although this won’t be the first time the Proton X70 is shown to the public, all previous instances were closed-door preview events for invited guests only. Therefore, this will be the first time it will be displayed in a public environment like KLIMS and for many visitors, this will be their first opportunity to take a closer look at both the inside and outside of PROTON’s newest model.
Aside from having five units on display, PROTON have also prepared special areas to give visitors a unique hands-on experience of the technology and equipment fitted to its newest model. For instance, a full scale half-cut model has been prepared to show critical areas where the body has been reinforced to make it safer in an accident. Display panels housing the touchscreen from the interior of the Proton X70 have also been prepared to demonstrate its usability and allow visitors to try the voice command system.
To add more excitement to its product display, PROTON will give KLIMS visitors a chance to experience the advanced driver assist systems offered on the Proton X70 without having to go for a test drive. A Virtual Reality (VR) area will simulate how systems like the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) work in real life, giving a preview of the sensations a driver will feel when they are activated.
Land Rover’s highly-anticipated luxury compact SUV, the New Range Rover Evoque, has been revealed in London’s creative East End with a high-energy display which saw a number of vehicles driving across digital skylines around the globe.
Having pioneered the luxury compact SUV market, with global sales of over 772,096 and more than 217 international awards, the new Range Rover Evoque is a sophisticated evolution of the original. Combining unrivalled Range Rover heritage with cutting-edge technology – designed, engineered and manufactured in Britain – it meets the needs of today’s customers. Tech firsts include ‘see through bonnet’ technology and a rear-view mirror that turns into an HD screen displaying a camera feed of what’s behind the vehicle.
The compact footprint is almost identical at 4.37m, yet built on Land Rover’s new Premium Transverse Architecture, there is more interior space than before. A longer wheelbase yields 20mm extra rear kneeroom and an increase in small item stowage – the larger glove box and centre cubby can now fit tablets, handbags and bottles with ease. The luggage space is 10 per cent larger (591 litres) as well as much wider and easily fits a folded pram or set of golf clubs, with space increasing to 1,383 litres when the flexible 40:20:40 second-row seats are folded.
The new architecture has been developed for electrification, with a 48-volt mild-hybrid available at launch and a plug-in hybrid model offered around 12 months afterwards. The mild hybrid powertrain is a first for Land Rover and works by harvesting energy normally lost during deceleration thanks to the engine-mounted belt-integrated starter generator, storing it in the under-floor battery.
At speeds below 17km/h (11mph), the engine will shut off while the driver applies the brakes. When pulling away, the stored energy is redeployed to assist the engine under acceleration and reduce fuel consumption. The result is a refined, quiet and efficient drive in built-up traffic heavy areas, in addition to efficiency savings.
The lowest emitting CO2 derivative is the 143g/km front wheel drive, manual transmission with 150PS Ingenium diesel engine.
The most popular all wheel drive, automatic transmission vehicles, come with a choice of four-cylinder Ingenium petrol and diesel engines. This is where the 48-volt mild-hybrid system is used to reduce CO2 emissions to as lows as 149g/km and fuel economy from 50.4mpg (5.6l/100km) (based on NEDC Equivalent test procedure).
An even more efficient plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and three-cylinder petrol Ingenium engine will also join the range.
Every bit a Range Rover, the compact SUV combines all-terrain capability with all-weather assurance. New Evoque features All-Wheel Drive, as well as a second-generation Active Driveline with Driveline Disconnect to enhance efficiency and Adaptive Dynamics to deliver the optimum balance of comfort and agility. Terrain Response 2 – technology first found on full-size Range Rover – automatically detects the surface being driven on a adjusts the set-up accordingly, while Evoque can now wade through water up to 600mm (previously 500mm).
Combining all-terrain capability with on-road composure, the Evoque’s new MacPherson Hydrobush front and Integral Link rear suspension and Adaptive Dynamics technology deliver not only improved refinement and stability in all conditions, but enables the agile handling that makes Evoque ideal for the tight city streets of many countries around the world.
The famed Range Rover command driving position has jumped into the digital age, with a segment-first ‘ClearSight rear-view mirror’ that transforms into an HD video screen. If rear visibility is compromised by passengers or bulky items, the driver simply flicks a switch on the underside of the mirror and a camera feed from the top of the car displays what is behind the vehicle in crisp high definition. The screen provides a wider (50-degree) field of vision and superior visibility in low light.
There is a reversing camera as standard on all models, alongside a suite of advanced driver assistance systems. This includes Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist, which centres the vehicle in the lane based on road markings as well as maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front.
Active safety features such as Lane Keep Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Driver Condition Monitor are all available to keep occupants safe.
Evoque is the first Land Rover with Smart Settings, which uses artificial intelligence algorithms to learn the driver’s preference and acts as an onboard butler. In addition to seat position, music and climate settings, Evoque can also control steering column preferences to maximise comfort.
Land Rover also collaborated with a number of fashion and technology brands to bring the design, innovation and sustainability characteristics of the New Range Rover Evoque to life.
This interior textile is made from recycled polyester microfibres, from items such as plastic bottles – in fact the equivalent of 53 plastic bottles go into each vehicle specified with these seats
