BYD is strengthening its position in the Spanish bus market. BYD and TUSGSAL, a public transport operator in Catalonia, Spain, signed a contract this week for the delivery of eight BYD pure electric 12 metre buses to the city of Badalona in Barcelona province.
It is the second Spanish order for BYD after being awarded the tender to deliver one 12 metre ebus to bus operator EMT in Valencia in April 2017.
It is the first pure electric bus fleet for Badalona. The eight ebuses are expected to be delivered in the beginning of 2019 and soon after delivery they will service routes in the city of Badalona.
Alfonso Suarez, Deputy Director and Secretary of the Board at TUSGSAL, said: “We are very excited about our first purchase of electric buses and delighted that BYD will supply them. It will be the first electric bus fleet in Badalona and we are looking forward to next year when we will start operating them.”

Thanks to TUSGSAL, citizens in Badalona will benefit from improved air quality with the help of our buses. This development underlines BYD’s growing market expansion across Europe – in this case in the competitive Iberian peninsula”.
Once upon a time a true workhorse that was rarely seen in urban areas, the humble FJ-40 today is much sought after by collectors just like the original Land Rover Defender.
Vehicle restorations in Malaysia can run from mediocre to showroom best. Truly excellent restorations like this one pictured here, particularly of specialty vehicles like the Toyota FJ Land Cruiser, are difficult to find, very expensive but they are indeed out there!
In order to distinguish a good restoration from a great one, or even a great one from an excellent one, it’s important to know what to look for. We know the FJ has a reputation for being rough and able to handle almost any road condition, but don’t underestimate the value of aftermarket add-ons that can improve your comfort! If you want LED head-lamps, much needed air-conditioning, or a suspension that will not rock your back bone. Your restoration shop/mechanic can make that happen, along with a host of other improvements like power disc brakes. These are very easy to add on and may end up increasing not just your comfort, but even the value of the vehicle should you wish to sell it later on.
Donor vehicle issues?
Here comes the biggest problem…..finding the right donor vehicle. You want to know your donor vehicle is legitimate and well taken care of; matching numbers on the engine and chassis with the JPJ registration documents are important! This is especially critical for cars like the FJ; there’s no reason why you should have to compromise.
At a minimum, your donor vehicles engine and gearbox should match the brand….so it should be a Toyota powertrain. If it doesn’t then best to avoid unless the price is hard to resist. There are plenty of FJs out there in excellent condition that can be restored to perfection.
Unmodified chassis. A car that has been decently cared for will have a chassis that is unwelded and has minimal rust. Extreme situations such as accidents, floods, or rollovers often require chassis work. Take your time and visit as many estates and small towns as possible
This classic Defender pickup 4×4 has been given a widebody kit that’s riveted onto the existing panels. British tuner ‘Kahn’ has also installed their custom X-Lander grille, fender vent mesh and a stainless steel hood with a big bulge on top of it.
The vehicle rides on new 1939 Defend Retro Dish wheels that have been painted in bright yellow, along with the steel protective plate at the front. This is in stark contrast to the overall paintjob, done in a traditional Keswick Green tone that Defenders are well known for.
Around the back, Kahn installed one of their twin crosshair exhaust systems that are integrated into the upper part of the mud flaps. As for the cabin, it’s unashamedly sporty, as twin racing-style Sports GTB bucket seats with integrated headrest have been installed. The seats are covered in quilted black leather and have a special tread embossed down the middle.
The Kahn-customized Defender pickup also has heavy-duty front & rear floor mats, billet steering wheel, machined aluminum pedals and detailing in Alcantara. Under the bonnet is a 2.4 TDCI 90 horsepower diesel engine. This conversion and the donor Defender can be yours on order. Be prepared to pay close to £28k or about RM180,000 before taxes, permits and shipping. Best you find a donor Defender right here in Malaysia and I will introduce you to a specialist who will be able to give almost the same conversion for a lot less money. UD Trucks announced the launch of “Fujin & Raijin. Vision 2030.”— an Innovation Roadmap which aims to deliver a variety of solutions for Smart Logistics, including fully-electric and autonomous trucks towards 2030. The roadmap focuses on the key areas of automation and electromobility to address the challenges of a rapidly-changing world. True to UD Trucks’ vision to provide the trucks the world needs today, the innovation roadmap takes a step-by-step approach together with customers to offer commercialized solutions for select automation and electromobility applications from 2020, with a view toward full-fledged commercialization by 2030.
By 2030, demand for parcel delivery is expected to grow 50% compared to 2014. To meet this demand, the logistics industry faces significant challenges, including a responsibility to reduce CO2 emissions, the growing scale of online commerce, and driver shortages. UD Trucks believes that transformative innovations in automation and electromobility are key to overcoming these challenges and providing customers with the trucks that fit their needs.
“When delivering on our promise to provide the trucks and services the world needs today, we have always done things a bit differently from others in our industry. As we now look forward, we are convinced that the world needs Smart Logistics,” said UD Trucks Chairman Joachim Rosenberg during the roadmap’s announcement at the Embassy of Sweden in Tokyo on April 23.
UD Trucks takes inspiration for their innovation roadmap from the gods of wind and thunder, as depicted in the famous gold-embossed Japanese folding screen, “Fujin and Raijin.” UD Trucks’ progress in automation is inspired by Fujin, the god of wind, who symbolizes the power of movement, while its work in electromobility is inspired by Raijin, the god of thunder, who symbolizes the power of energy. With “Fujin & Raijin. Vision 2030.” UD Trucks is committed to developing smarter logistics solutions in these key areas, enabled by advances in connectivity and digitalization.
Automation will reshape the logistics industry, creating real-life benefits for both customers and society in terms of productivity, safety, energy and fuel efficiency. UD Trucks is now focusing on solutions for safe, low-speed automation in confined areas, including in-plant and harbor logistics. It is also exploring on-road Highway Auto Pilot and CACC (Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control) platooning technologies in the near term, and more highly-automated on-road vehicles in the long term.
UD Trucks is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its products. UD Trucks is now developing technologies necessary to create silent, zero-emission vehicles that maximize energy efficiency, payload capacity and mileage. As battery systems continue to evolve, UD Trucks is testing a variety of solutions, including battery EV, parallel HEV and Series HEV.
Connectivity and Digitalization
Connectivity through digitalization is the enabler of both automation and electromobility. In Japan, UD Trucks has around 45,000 vehicles connected through the UD Information Service, which uses data collected from each vehicle to help improve uptime. By analyzing digital data collected from customer driving behavior, UD Trucks also gains insight on how to design even safer and more dependable trucks.
“Since the launch of the New Quon in 2017, UD Trucks has moved steadily forward on its mission to drive the future of smart logistics. This new innovation roadmap represents a major leap forward for both the company, the logistics industry, and our society,” said Douglas Nakano, Senior Vice President of UD Trucks Technology. “We are committed to ensuring that our customers around the world feel the full benefits of the solutions and products we are developing, which will ultimately make life better for everyone in our society.”
Over the course of 2018, UD Trucks will conduct demonstrations of autonomous driving and electric drive prototypes, targeting field tests and customer trials ahead of Tokyo Motor Show 2019. It aims to have vehicles in actual daily operation by the year 2020. All activities will be conducted with a view toward full-fledged commercialization of fully-electric and autonomous trucks by 2030.
Step-by-step together with customers, UD Trucks delivers solutions for Smart Logistics.
Range Rover Velar which has just been launched nationwide brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the Range Rover family. Designed and engineered based on ‘reductionism’ and elegant simplicity, this new luxurious mid-sized SUV has a unique character incomparable with other SUVs in its class.
With a starting price of RM529,800 the Velar features pioneering consumer technologies such as the flush deployable door handles and the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system which is the centrepiece of the Velar’s interior. The Touch Pro Duo features two 10-inch high-definition touchscreens integrated seamlessly behind secret-until-lit surfaces. These slim, intuitive displays work in harmony with the cabin architecture while adding an overall sense of modernity to the vehicle’s design. The Touch Pro Duo system allows the driver to multitask with greater safety by using two screens simultaneously. When travelling to a new destination, the lower screen can be used to make a call without losing the navigation on the upper screen. Other technology-advanced features include a Head Up Display**, Interactive Driver Display and Navigation Pro.
Winner of the Car Design of the Year at the 2018 World Car Awards, the Velar carries a progressive design featuring a seductive silhouette, flush deployable door handles, integrated rear spoiler as well as distinctive design cues from the front bumper to the rear of the vehicle, foil stamped grille and Matrix LED Headlights. The twin chrome exhaust finishers** that are integrated into the rear bumper, provide a subtle reference to the Velar’s power and performance.
Zooming into some of the Velar’s high-tech features:
Flush Deployable Door Handles
The flush deployable door handles are unique to the Velar in the Land Rover family. A futuristic feature, the door handles deploy when the vehicle is unlocked and the handles retract once the vehicle is locked. The door handles contribute to the low drag coefficient of only 0.32, making it the most aerodynamically-efficient Land Rover ever produced.
Matrix LED Headlights
The most slender ever to appear on a Land Rover vehicle, these boldly designed Matrix LED headlights produce a quality of light close to daylight, giving excellent illumination and reducing eye fatigue.
3-inch Interactive Driver Display
The new Interactive Driver Display makes driving the Velar more interesting especially with four visual themes and a full-screen 3D navigation display.
Touted as a calming sanctuary, the interior of the Velar is uncluttered, exquisite in detailing and offers exceptional refinement with the use of premium and luxury materials. The instrument panel’s strong, horizontal beam is the defining element of the Velar’s interior architecture. It rakes back dramatically towards the windscreen to create the fastest angle of any Land Rover and underlines the Velar’s dynamic driving characteristics. The slender air vents reinforce the Velar’s reductive, technology-enabled design.
Fortified with the Sports-Command driving position, the Velar’s front seats balance its performance-oriented design and support with opulent comfort. Meticulously weight-optimised and designed to liberate additional interior space and legroom, the seats have also been carefully sculpted for ease of entry and egress to and from the cabin. Kvadrat highly durable wool-blend premium textile contrasted with Suede cloth is made optional for customers who prefer the option over the perforated grained leather for the P250 variant or perforated leather with suede cloth*** that comes with the R-Dynamic variant. Kvadart is Europe’s leading manufacturer of high-quality design textiles. The use of Kvadart premium textile in the Velar is unique to luxury SUVs of this segment.
***Depending on interior colour choice
The Velar’s body is built with aluminium-intensive monocoque using Jaguar Land Rover’s Lightweight Aluminium Architecture. Aluminium alloys account for more than 81 percent of the body-in-white – a figure no competitor can match. Its light, stiff, aluminium-intensive body, together with double-wishbone front and Integral Link rear suspension provides the perfect basis for agile handling, superior ride comfort and outstanding refinement. It also delivers exceptional levels of crash protection that the Velar has been developed to meet.
It is also one of the safest vehicles due to its comprehensive safety system that includes six airbags and a suite of technology advanced driver assistance systems including Head Up Display**, Navigation Pro System and Cruise Control Speed Limiter.
The Velar delivers exceptional composure and agility on-road, as well as class-leading capability off-road. The most significant of these is an intelligent, efficient, torque on-demand all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, which provides the optimum torque distribution to suit various road conditions. Depending on road conditions, it can make the transition from 100 percent rear bias to fully locked in only 165 milliseconds; transient torque delivery to the front axle can take as little as 100 milliseconds. This makes the AWD system incredibly responsive, delivering exceptional performance in all conditions.
Exceptional performance and efficiency comes from its Ingenium powertrain, that is matched to a smooth-shifting ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics. The Velar is fitted with the P250 powertrain. It is the first of the two new petrol engines that develops peak power of 250PS and high maximum torque of 365Nm, which is maintained from just 1,200rpm to 4,500rpm. This means that the Velar can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds and return an impressive 7.6-litres/100km and 173g/km CO2 on the European combined cycle.
When purchasing the Velar, customers can choose from the following options:
Velar (P250) – RM529,800*
Velar R-Dynamic (P250) – RM588,800*
*Selling price is inclusive of 6% GST. Excludes Road Tax, Registration and Insurance.

The Velar (P250) comes standard with 20-inch rims while the Velar R-Dynamic (P250) comes with 21-inch rims.
Designed and engineered at Jaguar Land Rover’s development centres in the UK, the Velar is manufactured at the company’s Solihull production facility.

Furthermore, the standard Driving Experience Control switch allows the driver choose between various configurations – i.e. ECO PRO, COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ modes, all of which are designed to make the vehicle more dynamic, more comfortable or more efficient to drive.
The dynamic handling qualities of the BMW X3 are rooted in its ideal 50:50 weight distribution. Complementing the off-road capabilities of the BMW X3 is Hill Descent Control which helps maintain the SAV at a steady pace when driving down a steep incline.
With the Luxury Line, the BMW X3 offers leather upholstery, a Sensatec-covered instrument panel with contrast stitching and Dark Oak fine wood interior trim strips with accent strip in Pearl Chrome. The BMW X3 also comes with 6 ambient light colours tones (orange, lilac, mint, bronze, blue and white) with selectable contour and mood lighting.
