Scania South Africa recognised for HIV prevention work

The Swedish Workplace HIV/AIDS Programme’s (SWHAP) Most Comprehensive Programme Achievement Award 2014 was presented to Scania South Africa primarily for its employee support programme. 

John Viner, Programme manager at SWHAP explains: “The employee support programme assists in early diagnosis, access to treatment and continuous support for employees and their families. Currently over 90 percent of Scania’s employees are aware of their HIV status and 44 out of 55 HIV positive employees are on treatment.” 

SWHAP is an initiative from the International Council of Swedish Industry (NIR) and the Swedish Industrial and Metalworkers’ Union (IF Metall) to support HIV and AIDS programmes at Swedish related workplaces in Sub-Saharan Africa.

As well as employees and short term contract workers, Scania South Africa also supports other vulnerable groups, such as truck drivers in this work. During a recent six month period for example, 1,000 drivers were screened and tested for HIV. 

”The amount of activities as well as the number of people included in the programme impressed us,” Viner says. “And this successful and systematic work to prevent a further spread of HIV/AIDS in the region resulted in the SWHAP Achievement Award.”

Daimler opens new bus plant in Chennai

Less than three years after the market launch of the BharatBenz brand, Daimler’s commercial vehicles division in India is already heralding its next phase of growth. Today, Daimler Trucks and Buses is opening a new bus plant at its Chennai production facility in the south east of the country. The company also revealed its new buses and a heavy-duty truck to customers, business partners and representatives of the media.

“We have become firmly established in the Indian market with our BharatBenz brand, despite only operating in the market since 2012″ stressed Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard, member of the Daimler AG Board of Management responsible for Trucks and Buses. Sales of BharatBenz trucks in India rose 63 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2015 alone. A total of well over 20,000 of the brand’s trucks are now on India’s roads.

“We continue to strengthen our presence in the Indian commercial vehicle market with new products, now also including buses. In doing so, we are opening a new chapter of growth,” Dr Bernhard added. “This investment represents the ongoing pursuit of our strategy of targeted expansion for our global market presence.”

“We see enormous potential for growth in the Indian market. We expect the volume of the Indian market for buses weighing over eight tons to more than double by the year 2020,” specified Hartmut Schick, Head of Daimler Buses. “Our two-brand strategy allows us to offer our customers in the region the right products and services for them.”

The front-engine buses of the BharatBenz brand meet the requirements of the Indian volume market in the school, staff, and tourist segments. The British manufacturer Wrightbus mounts extremely light aluminum bodies onto the vehicles directly on Daimler’s plant premises.

In the future, Daimler will produce rear-engine buses under the Mercedes-Benz brand in Chennai for the premium segment. These will mainly be used for longer coach trips.

Both the front and rear-engine buses will be available with a gross vehicle weight rating of nine and more than sixteen tons when they go on sale in the fall of 2015. Buses with a gross vehicle weight rating of sixteen tons will be available from next year. Sales activities are carried out via the wholly owned Daimler subsidiary Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), for which it uses and is constantly expanding its established network of dealers and service providers. Customers in India can also rely on support from a single source when it comes to repairs, maintenance and after-sales.

Daimler is investing about EUR 50 million in the expansion of the bus business. The bus plant, which covers a total area of roughly 113,000 square meters, is initially set up for a capacity of 1,500 vehicles a year. This can be expanded up to a maximum of 4,000 units. Once production has been ramped up, Daimler Buses will employ about 300 people in India.

Once the new bus plant has been inaugurated, the plant in Chennai will be the first Daimler Trucks plant in the world to produce trucks, buses and engines for a total of three different brands: BharatBenz, FUSO and Mercedes-Benz.

Mazda produces a million CX-5 units in three years

Mazda Motor Corporation announced today that cumulative production of the Mazda CX-5 surpassed one million units at the end of April 2015.

Taking only three years and five months since production commenced in November 2011, the CX-5 is the second fastest Mazda model to reach the milestone one-million-unit mark, following the Mazda3 (known as Mazda Axela in Japan).

Production of the CX-5, which was the first of Mazda’s new-generation models that feature Skyactiv technology and Kodo-Soul of Motion, began at Ujina Plant in Hiroshima, but has since been expanded to include manufacture at Changan Mazda Automobile Co., Ltd., in China and locally assembly at Mazda Sollers Manufacturing Rus in Russia, Mazda Malaysia Sdn., Bhd., in Malaysia and Vina Mazda Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd., in Vietnam.

Mazda CX-5 was launched into the growing global crossover SUV market in February 2012 as a new core model for the Mazda brand. It has since won more than 60 different awards around the world, including the prestigious Car of the Year Japan in 2012-2013. The CX-5 has grown into a key model in Mazda’s global car lineup and was the top-selling SUV in Japan in 2012 and 2013.

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) has officially launched the all-­new Mitsubishi Triton today.

Entering its fifth generation, the all-­new Triton features a new front design with a distinctive grille design, new headlamps, and a ‘J-­line’ between the cabin and rear deck.

Key features include a Push Start Button, Keyless Operation, Xenon HID Headlamps with integrated Daytime Running Lights, Tilt and Telescopic Steering, Paddle Shifters, the 4WD selector, Touch Screen Audio System with Reverse Camera, and Auto Headlamps and Wipers.

Powering the pickup is a 2.5­litre 4­-cylinder engine with an intercooled Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT), producing 178 PS of power at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm (50 Nm more torque than before).  The all-­new Triton Quest 4×2 on the other hand, is equipped with a 2.5­ litre turbodiesel engine with a high pressure commonrail system which produces 110 PS and 200 Nm.

In terms of transmission, a 5-­speed automatic transmission with Sport mode is available, as well as a 5­speed manual transmission. This is coupled to Mitsubishi’s Easy Select 4WD system which distributes power to the front and rear axles.

Offering more comfort and convenience, the 4×4 model now measures 5280mm long (down 15mm), 1815 wide (up 15mm) and 1780mm tall. Ground clearance is rated at 205mm across all 4×4 variants. Interior dimensions have improved boasting an increase of 20mm in legroom and 10mm more shoulder room.

As much as safety is concerned, features that are standard across the range include dual SRS airbags, a collapsible steering column and anti­intrusion brake pedal, Anti­lock braking (ABS), and Electronic Brake­force Distribution (EBD).

Since launch in 2006, over 56,000 units have been sold nationwide. Today, we are excited with the official launch of the all­new Triton, the fifth generation of the Mitsubishi Motors pick­up line produced. Since 1978, over 4 million units have been sold worldwide.”

Mr. Yang said that the sales target set by MMM for the all­new Triton is 900 units a month, which will translate into a 20% market share of the pick­up truck Also speaking at the launch, Mr Tetsuro Aikawa, President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of MMC said, “The Triton is one of our most important products and contributed the most to our revitalization efforts in 2014. All new Toyota Hilux makes global debut

The eighth-generation Toyota Hilux was officially unveiled in Bangkok today, marking the start of sales of the all-new model in Thailand.

Completely re-designed from the inside out, the all-new Hilux is now 70mm longer and 20mm wider than the outgoing version, and comes with a slightly lower roofline and LED headlights with daytime running lights. It adopts a slightly more refined exterior design with a deeper front bumper, pronounced fender flares and more prominent character lines. The rear bumper has been redesigned while the new tailgate incorporates a rear view camera offered as standard.

Inside the cabin, it adopts a more car-like interior, similar to most new pickup trucks in the market at the moment. According to Toyota, the new Hilux will bring the utility and comfort you would expect to see in an SUV. The most noticeable feature is a tablet-like touchscreen display for the infotainment system, along with a 4WD changeover switch, leather upholstery and an LCD screen positioned between the speedometer and tachometer.

Under the hood, the new Hilux will be available depending on market with a 2.4-liter turbodiesel producing 160 bhp and 400 Nm along with a 2.8-liter turbodiesel rated at 177 bhp and 450 Nm. There’s also a 2.7-liter our-cylinder naturally aspirated gasoline engine with 164 bhp  and a beefier 4.0-liter six-cylinder with 278 bhp. Depending on engine choice, Toyota will be offering a six-speed manual gearbox and a six-speed automatic transmission.

It is also the world’s first pick-up to feature a manual transmission with rev matching technology.

Toyota says the overhauled Hilux will be able to offer a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 kg and a payload of up to 1,240 kg.

Hyundai Motor has started production of the company’s first multi-purpose light commercial vehicle (LCV), the All-new H350, in Europe. Designed, engineered and manufactured in Europe, for sale across Europe, the new H350 is engineered to deliver value beyond customer expectations and will establish new standards in its class.

With the introduction of the H350, Hyundai Motor presents the European LCV market with a new brand and the segment’s first all-new vehicle for several decades. The H350 will be manufactured by Hyundai Motor’s long-term production partner, Karsan Automotive, located in Bursa, Turkey. The all-new vehicle is built on a flexible platform that supports three body styles – Van, Bus and Chassis-cab.

“With the start of production of the All-new H350 today, Hyundai Motor will begin to play a key role in the European commercial vehicle sector. This portion of the market is forecast to grow significantly over the next few years, so now is the right time for Hyundai Motor to enter Europe’s big van segment. The 4.0 tonne (GVW) H350 Bus offers customers two 13+1 seat layouts and a choice of passenger access doors. The Turkish plant will also build the flexible H350 Chassis-cab, which provides an efficient, versatile and robust foundation for customized bodywork for cargo boxes up to 4.0 m long and 2.32 m wide.

Hyundai anticipates that the new H350 will have strong appeal to customers seeking a premium LCV thanks to its large cargo capacity, ergonomic design and car-like comfort. TMT to assemble and distribute Tata vehicles in Vietnam

As part of its business expansion plan, TMT Joint Stock Company signed a Distribution Agreement (“DA”), Supply Agreement and Technology License Agreement (“TLA”) with Tata Motors Ltd., India.The agreements will enable TMT to become the distributor of selected Tata Motors commercial vehicles, as well as expand its vehicle assembly business and distribution network in Vietnam.

Tata Motors will supply Completely Knocked Down (CKD) and Completely Built Unit (CBU) vehicles to TMT in Vietnam, enabling TMT to further strengthen its position, in the local automotive industry. The signing of the strategic and dynamic partnership would pave the way for a mutually beneficial collaboration between Tata Motors and TMT JSC, and will offer various synergies for all parties involved.

“It is indeed an honour for us that Tata Motors, known to be among the world’s top truck and bus manufacturers, has chosen to partner with TMT JSC to start this new chapter in their engagement with the Vietnam market.
